Sound of Play: 2018 special

Post by JaySevenZero »

This year, the Cane and Rinse and Sound of Play team bring you a musical collage — a constellation of audio memories from the year 2018. Rediscover favourites from 2018 or encounter tunes for the first time. This mix contains excerpts from 151 of the year’s games.

We challenge you to test your knowledge of video game music by trying to identify all of the games included within, and you can collaborate with members of our community by sharing your knowledge at caneandrinse.com/forum. On December 30th, a video revealing the identity of each game included will be posted on the Cane and Rinse YouTube channel at

2018 special was created, hosted, and edited by Ryan Hamann.

Rad, this was fun last year.

I’ll sit down with a coffee, a pack of Jaffa Cakes and give it a listen.

AHHHHHHHHHHH I WAS SO HAPPY TO HEAR ICONOCLASTS MUSIC! AND THAT EXCELLENT BOSS MUSIC TO BAT!!!!

Iconoclasts is seriously underrated. Like, it's free on PSN right now, but only 334 have beaten the PS4 version. Total. That is a God damned shame.

Also recognized some Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Mega Man 11 in there already. Lots of bangers on this list - I can't wait til the final track list drops.

Fantastic job again, Ryan! :) As for the tracks, I only got:

00:04:40 - Shadow of the Colossus
00:05:40 - Celeste
00:06:40 - Moss
00:07:40 - God of War
00:15:40 - Where the Water tastes like Wine
00:16:40 - Fallout 76
00:19:30 - Jurassic Park Evolution
00:25:00 - Just Cause 4
00:32:20 - The Walking Dead: The Final Season
00:39:20 - Soul Calibur 6

00:56:15 - The Quiet Man
00:58:15 - Red Dead Redemption 2
01:04:20 - Hitman 2
01:08:30 - Far Cry 5
01:10:45 - Monster Hunter World, I think?
01:16:30 - The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
01:17:05 - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

I'm ashamed I didn't recognize Valkyria Chronicles 4! I'd be really interested in knowing what 00:11:00, 00:48:30, 00:52:45, 00:59:00 & 01:01:10 are. I could swear I've heard them before, but I wasn't able to pinpoint exactly where.

PS: I'm gonna check out Iconoclasts based on Isopod's enthusiasm. :)

Oh and Ryan, this is such a wonderful piece of editing man.

It takes a good ear and excellent understating of pacing to stick something like this together and you've nailed it. Again.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you're having fun listening to it so far.

As a hint, when game audio is overlayed onto music, they don't always represent the same game. Sometimes, but not always 😉

Really enjoying it here, too. Only about a third of the way through but it's another cracker. Some awesome J-pop stuff in there that I really want to know where it's from, as long as it's not Gal Gun 2. I'll be back with a full list of answers, or rather as full as I can manage.

48:30 and a few seconds before it is some sort of Star Fox remix. So would either be from Star Link or Smash Bros. I guess.

Can almost guarantee the Star Fox mix is from Starlink: The Battle for 70% Off On Boxing Day.

... So very tempted to drop $30 on the Switch version just for the arwing. I don't even own a Switch.

This is going to sound super hyperbolic, but I swear to 12 Inch Leon, Iconoclasts is a Metroidvania better than any Metroid or Igavania. Like. It checked all the boxes for a "retro" style game for me. Great 16 bit style art? Check. Amazing OST? Yep. A story that doesn't even need to be there but actually makes the game more compelling? It's got that. Boss fights? Some of the best ones I've ever played.

Like. The game just has this hyperactive energy to it, it never stops being fun. It's not too hard on standard difficulty, everything is really flashy, even dramatic moments have you mentally primed to smack something with a wrench... LIKE IT'S SO GOOD, FAM. GO GET IT!!!!
(The PSV version is free on PSN, but it has cross play. So if, like me, you only have a PS3 and PS4, you can "redeem" it on PS3 and download it from your library on PS4).

Also, the VC4 track I recognized was the attract screen main theme. It was in.... certainly the first quarter of the medley. VC4's OST was overall kinda disappointing - lots of recycled tracks, and the original stuff was kinda meh. But that main theme is phenomenal. Suits the game's story and tone perfectly.

Alright, I'm sold, I'm sold! Take it easy!
I'll go check it out one of these days and I'll report back.

I was able to download the PS4 version without any issue. It popped up in the PS+ section like any other PS4 game. Maybe there are regional differences between the NA and EU stores?

C'est possible. They may have also updated the page once they realized Cross Play existed or something. I'm not at home to check.

I know you are sold, and I'm happy, but I have to sell THE WORLD on this game. And .hack//GU Last Recode. And Near Death. Basically any obscure title that blew me away. :3 The gaming world must know!

Here's the first few minutes of Iconoclasts, including the first boss fight.

I'm also gonna suggest the track Moonlight for next Sound of Play.

Another great supercut of some fantastic soundtracks. I must admit, a fair few of them had me surprised that they came out this year. Either because I swear they came out ages ago, or were even yet to be released. And a couple I didn't recognise at all of course.

Was pleasantly surprised to see Forza Horizon 4 on there. I have to admit, even though I'm a big fan of the game, I haven't really been that thrilled with the soundtrack. Same for the previous entry too in fact. They've been fine, but kind of disappointing after FH2. Strange for a game that's supposed to be themed around a summer music festival. But the problem I had with these games is there was nowhere near enough music like the track featured in the video! It's a great track that perfectly nails the tone the game is going for. That kind of uplifting and energetic DnB with a strong melody, but which feels kind of chilled out and relaxed at the same time. In FH2, the Hospital Records radio station was full of tracks like that. In 3 and 4 there was like one, maybe two, in each game. The rest are really boring nothing tracks that fall so far below those intro tracks. In 4, you don't even get to hear that track again after that intro sequence! Such a shame. At least you could put your own music in 3 to make up for it. Not possible with 4.

I had to remove some pieces because the games were delayed into 2019, but some stuff might have made it past my radar. The only one I know that I cheated a bit with was Dragon Quest, which came out last year in Japan and this year in the west, but I felt bad for not including it last year.

I think Forza’s meant to be themed around a motorsport festival rather than a music festival!

Point taken though; I tend to stick to the classical station or radio off.

Perhaps that just proves how much it fails at its job of handling theming properly, if it's possible to play the game and completely miss the idea that it's supposed to be a music festival. The idea of the "Horizon Festival" as an event was always supposed to emphasise the music festival vibe a lot. Obviously the event itself is a hybrid between car and music festival, but they used to push the music side much more than they do now. They made a pretty big deal out of it in the first game. Lots of loading screens of bands on stage, artist lineup posters, etc. They got some famous radio DJ in to select the soundtrack too. The festival sites had very clear performance stages as well. Some of that stuff is still there, but it's been pushed back somewhat. Trying to keep that general atmosphere, but not really going out of its way to really sell the player on it. It's kind of a shame.

I don't think that's necessarily tied to my issues with the soundtrack selection though. They could fix that problem just by picking different songs to be in the game. And despite it going the hardest in to the music festival thing, the first game also lacked tracks like that too.

I also tend to play with the radio station off in 4 as well. Nearer launch I had it on pretty much all the time, but once I started getting tired of hearing the same tracks over and over (not because there isn't enough variety, I just play a whole lot) I just tend to play without it. At this point I've probably played more of the game with no music.

There may be the intention to make you think are some music based activity there as part of the general festivities, but canonically speaking, I am certain ‘Horizon’ is a street racing event, not a music festival.

As you say though, perhaps more a ‘hybrid’. I shall load up the first games and look out for those band posters and such.

Anyone else care to chime in on this?
