This week, Sound of Play brings you a musical collage — a constellation of audio memories from the year 1986. Rediscover favourites from 1986 or encounter tunes for the first time. This mix contains excerpts from 77 of the year’s games.

We challenge you to test your knowledge of videogame music by trying to identify all of the games included within, and you can collaborate with members of our community by sharing your knowledge in this here forum thread. Soon, a video revealing the identity of each game included will be posted on the Cane and Rinse YouTube channel.

You can keep up with this project on the Play;Write website:

Or download this and every mix that has been created so far at 320kbps here:

Anyway 1986... interesting one this, cause of the ones I don’t recognise, I can still pretty much tell you what machine it’s on...
Spoiler: show
Parallax
Zelda 1
Rambo 2 (c64, loading music)
Castlevania
Bubble bobble
Dragon Quest
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Metroid
International Karate
Sanxion (should’ve gone with the loading music, it’s an all-timer)
One Man and His Droid
Monty on the Run
Lightforce
Outrun (you tease Ryan...)

And because Lightforce is awesome, here’s a really great modern take on it:

Nice list there. I'll have to check out that additional Sanxion music.

And a curio is that, with Sanxion not coming out for Atari 8-bit, Rob reused his tune for Firebird budget title The Extirpator:

That happened a lot. The theme for ‘one man and his droid’ ended up being used as loading music for dozens of later Mastertronic titles.

This a slightly different case than that where an entirely different developer and publisher is involved though. I can’t think of any other tunes (other than ‘traditional’ or classical numbers) where the same piece was used in quite this way (that’s not to say this is unique, I’m sure it isn’t).

Things were definitely a lot looser back then around copyright and who actually owned what.
