This week, Sound of Play brings you a musical collage — a constellation of audio memories from the year 2004. Rediscover favourites from 2004 or encounter tunes for the first time. This mix contains excerpts from 140 of the year’s games.

We challenge you to test your knowledge of videogame music by trying to identify all of the games included within, and you can collaborate with members of our community by sharing your knowledge in our forum.

You can keep up with the History of Videogame Music project and download high-quality MP3s of each mix at https://playwritecast.com/the-history-o ... game-music.

Let’s have a go at this one then...
Spoiler: show
Really difficult this one, looks like I didn’t actually play all that many games in 2004. I would’ve been very deep in the crunch for Black and White 2 at the time, but there was another reason which we’ll get to...

In rough order...

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Easter (still amazed they got away with a theme that ludicrous)
GTA San Andreas
Something that sounds like a Sakimoto theme but I can’t place it.
Metroid: Zero Mission
Myst 4 (I’ve sat about 10 feet away from an orchestra playing this, it absolutely *slays*)
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
Halo 2 (almost caught me out there, this theme is in multiple Halo games)
007: everything of nothing
Psp boot Sound
I know Walkie Talkie Man was in Elite Beat Agents, but we’re a few years off that...
Warioware Twisted (only one not release in Europe, mercury tilt switches don’t pass our toy safety laws)
Half life 2 (duh)
Xenosaga 2 (the only good thing about that one was the Yuki Kajiura soundtrack if you ask me)
Metal Wolf Chaos
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (reeeeeemake)
World of Warcraft (and *thats* why I didn’t play many games in 2004...)
Unreal Tournament 2004
Katamari Damacy

And at least two that I know I even own the soundtracks to but can’t place for some reason.

Anyway, here’s that Xenosaga 2 piece in a fuller version than was in the actual game, cause it’s crazy and shows why Kajiura really hasn’t done enough game soundtracks for my liking.

Wow, quite a few licensed songs this year, it's a shame I have no idea what games any of them come from...
Spoiler: show
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (a freebie)
Metriod: Zero Mission
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Halo 2
Pretty sure ~21:00 is from whichever Megaman Battle Network game came out that year (Man, remember when we got Megaman games every year?).
Clannad (Hits me like a knife, every time)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Donkey Konga
Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green
Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror

I didn’t spot the Fable track? Oh dear. (In my defence, I didn’t work on the first one, so it’s soundtrack isn’t burned into my memory like the ones for the sequels are)

It's layered on top of other music, so it's a bit hidden.
