The Fool's Errand

Post by JaySevenZero »

Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for The Fool's Errand for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.

A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

Hey folks, some help here from your resident 80s liker: if you're looking to play the Fool's Errand or just find out what the hell it is before the podcast, here's my two recommendations:

Jimmy Maher's essay on the game and its author, which is both a fascinating read and contains a zip package at the end with mac/windows/linux MiniMac emulators and the full game. This is how I played it several years ago, although I never finished it so am not 100% certain there's no problems. https://www.filfre.net/2015/11/cliff-jo ... ls-errand/

Cliff Johnson's own website, which has a package with both it and the two quasi-sequels—includes all the instruction manuals and pretty much guaranteed to work, but specifically configured for Windows. Not sure if you can just pull the files of the game itself and use it on a Mac, though if I have trouble with the filfre one, guess I'll be finding out: https://www.fools-errand.com/07-DL/emulate-WIN.htm

Anyway, I can say that it's a pretty excellent game that's much more accessible than your typical 80s fare, both due to it being entirely mouse-controlled and being a tightly woven collection of puzzles and meta-puzzles. Here's a video of someone playing the first 5 minutes of the Mac version (which is the only one you should play, as Johnson disavows the PC and Amiga versions as being sloppily programmed and developed.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCY_OrFddEc
