Like I said, don't expect any miracles from me with this game, even though I like it quite a bit. I'm desperately trying to stay alive, you want me to keep any sort of chain combo going?! :P

We have until the end of the month, right? Though I don't see myself massively improving anytime soon.

Whoa, great score! :o

Don't think I'll get even close to that, tbh.

I'm kinda struggling, personally.

I haven't had as much time to dedicate to this game as I would have wanted to lately and I haven't been able to reach my score again. The time pressure is also kinda getting to me, even if only subconsciously.

Love the game and I certainly have a better grasp on its fundamentals than before the tournament, but I sincerely doubt I'll manage to trouble clippa's score before the end of the month.

No, we'll keep the deadline to give everyone some focus and someone will be crowned winner at the end. Probably you unless Stanshall can pull another miracle out of his bag of tricks when he gets back from his space travel excursion. :)

But I'll probably keep playing this at my own rhythm afterwards. It's a great game and I know for a fact that I haven't reached my skill ceiling yet.

I'm back in town but back to zero with this. I had a couple of runs of DOJ and chained stage one on my second go. Felt flipping great. Still locked in. Had a few runs of DFK and it's just not stuck with me at all. Good game but I possibly screwed myself playing so much DOJ immediately before it. It's too similar and I'm not enjoying it nearly as much. I definitely think something totally different next time.

Strong style is the best for survival, but the worst for scoring, it seems. I'll stick to it, because I suck at scoring in this game, so the way I see it is that the longer I stay alive, the more likeli it is I'll put down something even remotely substantial on the board.

I'm determined not to come last

Going to put a bit more effort in to learning stage one, I think that's my only chance!

Clippa, take a bow (and next time you're playing with the opposite hand).

Alex, you can catch me for sure if you do a decent stage one and just chug away for a few more stages. That's all I've done so far. We can compete for Europa League places.

Also, I was reading or listening something the other day which said there's fuck all point in nailing stages 1-3 of this because the vast majority of the points are in the last two stages or something. Motivating.

I played like a man possessed today and reached a personal milestone: I survived the grueling stage 3, even got a different boss and managed to destroy it... but my score was a hundred mil below my recorded top score. :(

This attempt I did worse survival wise and better scoring wise. At least I managed to surpass my own score... and I had fun returning to this game!

Well, I believe that's TIME for this challenge. Thanks for organising Ksub, you can consider this a resounding success. Plenty of participants for an old Cave game, 6 pages. Pleased to see I wasn't last. Subsequent goes I couldn't get past my best score. I'll now return to Novice mode when playing this. It's a great shmup and one I will chip away at for a long time to come.

Good day gentlemen, it's been emotional.

Yeah, it was fun while it lasted!

My apologies again for not properly committing to it in the way I wanted to. I was just not getting anywhere and real life concerns got in the way which led to severe burnout on my part.

Many thanks to all other participants though, and massive props to clippa who completely overshadowed everyone else with his gargantuan score! Well done, man. I'm impressed. :P

And congrats for taking this in such a convincing way!

This guy killing it even after the competition is over, grinding us into the dirt. I gotta take my hat off.

So, err, Ikaruga next?

Nah, I was just kidding, suggesting something that I can actually play a bit! Would be a shite choice, there's literally one way to play that game or you're wasting your time in a HS comp. That article is great by the way, tickled me!

I don't like that article much. It seems to focus exclusively on explaining the appeal of conventional CAVE-like bullet hell shmups and then deride Ikaruga for being a different kind of game entirely. I would have preferred to read an actual in-depth analysis of why the author doesn't think Ikaruga's systems work as intended rather than a summary of what makes Ketsui so great (apparently aimed at people who have never played it) followed by some quick and easy insults towards a game with a completely different design philosophy.

I'd like to think that I've gained a modicum of experience with a variety of different shmups over the past six months or so, and yet I still consider Ikaruga to be one of the most elegant and best designed games in the genre. According to this article, people like me don't exist. Nice.

There were a handful of good jokes in there, though. :P

Well done Clippa. I must admit I kind of lost interest, just found it too difficult.

I've got a few suggestions for the next compo, but really am not pushing them in any way, I know very little about the genre really and happy to give whatever a go.

But,

Armed Police Batrider
Gigawing
Galaxians (we could go super oldskool! See also...)
Defender

Gigawing is probably my favourite of that bunch. Doesn't mean I'm any good at it, mind!
