The C&R MAME Tournament - ROUND 5

"The more you play, the more exciting it gets...!"

A bold claim! But were the promotional posters for Capcom's 1987 arcade platformer lying to us...? Find out here!
Wikipedia wrote:A barbarian hero jumps and fights his way through a variety of colourful, enemy-packed levels. The sprawling, eight-way scrolling, two-dimensional levels are packed with hidden bonuses to encourage and reward exploration. Though a percentage of these bonuses consist of dubious and often self-evident "advice", most come in the form of "Zenny coins", currency that allows the player to buy such items as an upgrade to their weapons and armour, keys for treasure chests, and anti-poisoning potions. Special items that reveal coins, upgraded armour, full vitality, extra lives, extra time, or simply bonus points may be found by attacking certain walls.

The Japanese version has a few changes that makes it more challenging than its American counterpart. Several of the "falling rock" obstacles were added in this version. Additionally, the prices of many of the items are higher. But perhaps the biggest difference is related to fighting the later bosses (the three dragons and the dual sword-wielding foes at the end of stages 5 and 7). In the American version, it is possible to duck and avoid taking damage when the bosses touch the player's character as long as one of their projectiles does not hit him. In the Japanese version, the player is not able to do this.

INSTRUCTIONS

Download the ROM from here : http://upload.drarok.com/uploads/21412-blktiger.zip

Drop it in your ROMS folder, run MAME and AUDIT ALL GAMES.

Press 5 to insert coin and 1 to start a game. (For more detailed instructions on running MAME see week 1)

Arrow keys control movement, a button for jump and a button for attack. (I don't think there are any more controls that this).

As always, highest score on one credit wins! Remember to take a screenie with F12 and post it here. Winner is highest score by 8pm next Saturday evening.

Seems like a fun little game this week. Ghouls N' Ghosts with a bit more substance, and rather comically they re-use the power up sprites from the 19xx games.

Enjoy!!

If it's Black Tiger it's US - JPN version is Black Dragon (on the title screen).

Bloodstock here too, got mine here: EmuParadise Black-Tiger (watch out for the ads, they're harmless but a little strangely timed)

It's good fun, eh?

For anybody who's still playing, I really recommend chopping at the walls for secrets. Tons of useful items hidden away, and it's not random so you can just make a mental note for your next run through. There's a 10, 000 point item just sitting there in the first level.

Edit: nobody else gonna take a crack at this? Here's my final submission

Guys, I have to admit I kind of forgot about these. There just didn't seem much point when only 2 or 3 people were entering each week. It's no big deal, I know everyone is busy and finding time to play MAME during the week just isn't top of my list of things I need to do either! I'm happy to carry on with these if anyone desperately wants to, or we could even just have them occasionally, maybe just post up the odd challenge here and there. I don't know, open to ideas though. Although if everyone just wants to knock it on the head I'm cool with that too, lol.
