“HOW HIGH CAN YOU GET?”

In the first of a series of podcasts about Nintendo’s iconic simian, Leon, Darren and Michiel find out who among them is the king of Donkey Kong. As well as the original 1981 coin-op, its many varied ROMsets, clones, conversions and ports, the crew also play through the ape’s 1994 Game Boy outing – actually a ‘secret’ 100 level Mario puzzle platformer. As usual we also hear from Cane and Rinse community correspondents and take a very brief look at DK Jr. and other relevant games that came in between 1981 and 1994.

Music used in this issue:

1. Donkey Kong arcade music by Yukio Kaneoka

2. Do the Donkey Kong by Jerry Buckner & Gary Garcia

Cane and Rinse 375 was edited by Jay Taylor

Here's some more stuff about the Universal lawsuit, from what I remember reading in Game Over, Press Start to Continue: the Maturing of Mario by David Sheff w/Andy Eddy:

Universal sued Coleco first and they immediately settled. However, the lawyer for Nintendo, Howard Lincoln, was a good deal more savvy, and he advised Nintendo not to settle. (The then head of Universal, Sid Sheinberg, infamously snarled "I view litigation as a profit center" during negotiations). When the case went to trial, Lincoln and Nintendo were able to successfully point out that Universal themselves, when making their 1976 King Kong remake, argued that King Kong was in the public domain. That was the end of that.

Ah yes, I remember now. I read that book too, years ago. I think the book also suggests that this move is what propelled Lincoln to the position he would come to enjoy at NoA.

Great episode! I do love it when you cover the classic arcade games. I'd love a few more old arcade episodes.

Asteroids and Galaxian series both coming up this year. And we’ll certainly do Missile Command on its 40th anniversary in 2020.
