Nintendo 2DS

Thinking about presents for my 5 year old son for Christmas. He's always eyeing up my Switch and we do play together on occasions but only when I'm there to supervise. Seeing as he's showing an interest in gaming I was considering picking up an original 2DS, hopefully in a Black Friday sale. A Switch is a bit too expensive and I don't trust that he wouldn't drop one and break the screen or lose a Joycon, whereas the 2DS looks a lot more robust and has a good catalogue of games, probably more that are aimed at kids his age than what are on the Switch too. Anybody own one of these or have kids that have them and how are they to hold? Cheers guys.

Sorry dude, I don’t have a 2DS, my boy has an old DSi which he loves but generally the people that have them appreciate the form factor and robustness of the device.

I’d say you won’t go wrong with a 2DS and like you say, the game library is much better suited to little ones than the Switch is at the moment.

The 2ds is definitely aimed at younger gamers, it was specifically put out as a companion for Pokemon X/Y, the idea being that the 3ds models of the time were a bit... fragile... for the sudden influx of kids that would want to play the new Pokemon.

It does look a little bit Fischer price compared to the 3ds, but there’s no chance of the hinges snapping off, heh.

My nephew had one when he was about 5 or 6 and still has it. It seemed a lot more rugged than the hinged model. And just as well because he gave it hell. He loved it. Brought it everywhere with him.

I'd say go for it. It's not the prettiest of machines but it's cheap, more durable than the alternatives and the back catalogue of games speaks for itself.

Edit: the Mario Kart 7 bundle is just €99.99 in Argos. That's excellent value.

Edit: I owned the 2DS XL which retains the same clamshell design as the 3DS. It felt very fragile. Do not buy that model for a 5 year old.
Exactly what I was thinking regarding the fragility of the new model. They have Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros 2 bundles in Smyth's for £79.99. I kind of want to hold out until Black Friday but I would hate for them to sell out in the meantime. They only have a few of each. I might see if they'll do a Black Friday price match if it comes down in price in the sales. Thanks for your feedback guys.

Hi there I agree with the replies here.

You should wait for the best Black Friday deals to come I think they are already giving away as early as today.
2 ds is a good console but you might also want to consider the 2ds xl it has a larger screen and better in all around.

But you are correct built quality to consider I prefer 2ds.

Might as well consider this shop I've been shopping here for years and they have one of the
best prices https://www.adorama.com/price-guarantee/l/

This year I will be buying the nintendo switch lite although it doesn't support dock I think what a downer.
