The Private Eye- Part of the Vaughan kick. This book was brilliant. The internet is outlawed, everyone's identity is secret with multiple aliases, the press has replaced the police. So many great ideas here and it's all wrapped up in a neo-noir story.
I've read both of these in the past month or so too, and totally echo your sentiments.

Even when Vaughn isn't on top form like with We Stand On Guard, he still manages a really engaging story. Love that dude!

Yeah, I think it's easy to see We Stand On Guard as middle of the road for Vaughan but it's still well done. I remember in interview in a Marvel comic I was reading back in 2004 and Vaughan was saying he doesn't like sequels, he wanted something NEW. I've thought back to that interview every time he does a new project and it's completely different then what he's done and what other people are doing.

This might be of interest to my fellow comic readers.

I help out my local comic shop by presenting a weekly YouTube show going over some of the best releases of the week.

Feel free to take a look and let me know what you think :D

Is anyone watching The Boys on Amazon? I've only watched the first episode so far and even though it was obviously never going to reach the ridiculous heights of the comics it definitely doesn't hold back that much.

It released the same weekend that the final season of Preacher started as well which seems like it has cut a lot of filler and gone straight for the endgame.

A bunch were talking about it in "What Have You Been Watching".

I just finished reading all six volumes of Descender by Jeff Lemire. Fantastic series. It's a great scifi tale with wonderful world building and flawed characters. The art, by Lil' Gotham's Dustin Nguyen, was perfect. Highly recommended.

I had a look, it was good mate! I don't keep up with the latest releases, prefer to read TPBs, but if I did, it's exactly the sort of thing I'd find really useful and interesting.

...

I borrowed a James Bond comic from the library, and am enjoying it more than I thought I would. I've already read all that I wanted from their modest collection, so just got it out of a lack of anything else that took my fancy. Its pretty decent so far. It's written by Warren Ellis, which surprised me!

Ah I haven't looked at that thread for a while. Haven't been on the forum much really as I've been pretty busy. School holidays so been home with the kids a lot. My Marvel Unlimited subscription is even being neglected although I did read all of the 2013 Infinity series a few weeks ago.

Subscribed! Very nice production. Do you mind sharing what program you use to put it all together?

We added these to my library as well. My friend read them, but found them too gruesome for his taste. I still have to check them out.

The recent Bond stuff has an interesting backstory, the short form of which is that they’re intended to be ‘Bond from the books, not Bond from the movies’, which is why it’s grimmer.

Warren Ellis did the first two arcs, then others took over. There’s a fun one shot by Kieron Gillen that’s pretty good, for example,

We use a free bit of software called Blender to put togeher the shop videos. I'd like to take credit but I'm purely the host and we have a chap called Jamie that records and edits the video.

I have done a few comic based videos myself which I used iMovie on my Macbook to edit. Might as well plug those while I'm here :D

I still struggle with the fact Kieron Gillen is now a well respected comic book writer. I just remember 20 odd years ago when I first started posting on the PC Gamer forum he, as Brem X Jones, was moderator and constantly spoiling our fun. I'm sure he temp banned me more than once

I remember him as ‘C-Monster’, a scraggly young Amiga Power contributor from even before that (circa 1994).

I'm slowly working my way through a sort of Batman chronological time line. I read the whole Knightfall Saga last year and just read Contagion and Legacy - all of which I've read before, but they're really great stories. The point is I wanted to read No Man's Land, but kept finding further and further back points to start from! I'm now moving on to Road To No Man's Land before the main series itself, and then possibly having a look at the Forever Evil crossover. I've still got all of Rebirth to read, but wanted to clear these major storylines before catching up with more recent stuff.

No point to that post, by the way. Just thought I'd share!

Anyway - has anyone seen the new DCeased (sic) series? Looks really interesting and I've seen some positive reviews. I don't pick up individual issues, so probably going to wait for the trade, but it's the first time I can think of that zombies have infested Gotham! Looks cool, anyway.

No Man's Land might be my favorite Batman comic. I've been meaning to reread it myself for a while now.

So, I've been filling some gaps in my 80's X-Men run. Basically, I've been reading all the post-Mutant Massacre X-Men comics from there up until Claremont left in the early 90s.

Some of these stories are now up their with my favorites and I really like some of the team configurations that go on. It took me forever to read these mainly because the price of the Essential Collections went way up, but, with my Marvel Unlimited sub, they're were all there waiting for me!

I also used this to read a little of the other X-books that were going on at the time. I bounced around X-Factor during crossovers, as well as reading their last stories as the original team. I also hoped over to New Mutants to see the first appearance of Cable and read that team becoming X-Force. Unfortunately, not all of X-Force and X-Factor are on the app, so I'll have to save my reading of those series for a future retro-session.

I've never read any X-Men, nothing. I've never read much Marvel at all really, just a bit of the first Spiderman stuff.

I'm a few issues in to Batman: Cataclysm, as a prelude to Road To No Man's Land. Its absolutely fantastic! Really good stuff.

Usagi Yojimo. The story of a rabbit with a samurai blade, heavily influenced by the samurai films of Akira Kurosawa. This character has a bit of a chequered history with various publishers, but this Fantagraphcs collection seems self-contained and feels like a good jumping-on point.
One of my absolute favorite series. There's never been a quality drop. Absolutely worth reading everything you can. It's a pipe dream of mine to own the series in some form of physical collection...

Started reading ‘Die’ today, there’s 7 issues out now (with the first five collected in trade, called ‘Fantasy Heartbreakers’). The set up is six teens got pulled into a D&D game, but only five got out, and couldn’t say why. Then 30 years later they find themselves back in there... and it’s not fun for any of them. (As a premise it’s the dungeons and dragons cartoon crossed with IT, but that’s not really where the story goes)

It’s pretty grim, and very meta. There’s a bit about agency of player choice (a la the Thief games) mixed with some criticism of game dev culture in issue 6 that hit pretty close to home.

It is kinda weird to me that pretty much the only singles I read these days are written by Kieron Gillen though, most of the other comic writers whose work I enjoy aren’t currently doing anything in the medium.

(the Wicked and the Divine finished this week too, outstanding series that and well worth reading. It pulls a trick where it makes the reading audience complicit in the abuse of one of the characters that I suspect no one can ever do again, and that’s not anywhere near the best thing about it as a series. If you like Saga, you’ll like WicDiv)

I'm delighted to hear you say that because I'd put this off for the longest time. I'm not usually attracted to characters that have moved about in that way. I'm never sure of where to start or what, if anything, I should disregard.
Read it all. It changes publishers, but it's Stan Sakai's baby the whole time. And it's all one story, there's never a reboot or anything. As far as I know, it all counts.
