This game looks awesome for an NES game. The number of abilities that Kirby could copy was also impressive. Really fun game.

A feature in a recent issue of Retro Gamer reminded me how much I enjoyed this game when it came out, and it's held up fantastically well. The graphics and animation are so polished, it just looks absolutely gorgeous still. The Megadrive version of Aladdin was, in my opinion, miles better than than the SNES offering which was a totally different game. I never even realised this until years later whilst trying the SNES version on an emulator. This isn't really a difficult game (especially not if you save state at the start of every level haha!) but just playing it through is still hugely fun. It's just a joy to look at, and remains one of the best games, graphically, of the 16-bit era, I think. The music just adds to the overall package of feeling like you're playing an actual cartoon. Great game. Of course I couldn't download it without snagging a few dozen other old classics, and we are on holiday in a couple of weeks so I feel like my Megadrive filled PSP is going to get well and truly rinsed!

Finally checked this one off my list! This game is really good. It got a lot harder than I was expecting towards the end, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
Re: Games completed 2016
I still think it's the best Mario, and certainly the best platformer ever made. Easily in my top 5 games ever.

Re: Games completed 2016
Yeah, I liked it a lot. It was a bit weird though because I had played New Super Mario Bros (1, 2 and Wii) before playing Super Mario World, so there were elements that I had thought were from the New series, but turns out were from World. But now I'm only missing Mario Sunshine, some of the Gameboy Marios and the games for Wii U. Almost caught up!
Re: Games completed 2016
I'd say that the Galaxy games are the high points of the series, so you've got some great gaming to look forward to. Wonderful bite sized chunks of design and imagination, as economical as almost anything I've played yet with more ideas in one level than some publishers manage in a year.

Re: Games completed 2016
I've already played both Galaxy games and I completely agree with you, they're both my favorite in the franchise. They are actually what got me into Mario and prompted me to go back to the beginning of the series and play all the way through. I had already played all the Wii, DS and 3DS Marios and then I went back and played the 4 NES Marios, Mario 64 and Super Mario World. By my count, I have four left in my backlog (Mario Land 2+3 for Gameboy, SMW2: Yoshi's Island for SNES and Mario Sunshine for Gamecube). But going through the series is such a fun way to see how video games changed over the years.Stanshall wrote:I'd say that the Galaxy games are the high points of the series, so you've got some great gaming to look forward to. Re: Games completed 2016
I missed the crucial 'U' from your previous post! Funnily enough, SMG is what got me back into gaming after pretty much skipping the PS2 gen. I can still remember the excitement of waiting for it to arrive and it blew me away. 2 was such a fantastic refinement, far better than it needed to be or than expected. And even more coincidentally, the SMG episodes of C&R the first I ever heard, after a recommendation, downloaded for a long plane journey on my honeymoon, this time last year. Might give them another whirl this week.
Sunshine is quite interesting and has a certain charm, definitely has a feel they've never approached again, but with a lot of creative flourishes which they did build upon in the future. I'm interested to hear what you make of that one.

What a weird, interesting game. Enjoyed it a lot and was able to get almost all of the gold cubes and a fair number of anti-cubes before consulting a guide. I wish I had been able to play it right when it came out though to have been part of that community puzzle solving.
July - Star Fox (SNES via Wii)
I see how this must have been really graphically impressive at the time, but as someone who played a lot of Star Fox 64 as a kid, I thought this was a bit underwhelming. I think the jump between Star Fox and Star Fox 64 is pretty massive.

SUPERB game. Had to turn down the difficulty for the final level, but apart from that, a stiff but fun challenge through out!

Dark Souls (again)
Dark Souls 2: SoTFS (again) almost got the platinum for that
FEAR: 2
Dear Esther
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Layers of Fear
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Max Payne 3
Cookie Clicker (had a look at the code and cheated )
Dark Souls 3
DOOM (2016)
Halo 5: Guardians - Looking forward to this podcast
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Gravity Rush (Vita)
So after a lonnnnng period of playing non-completable multiplayer games (Titanfall/GTA Online/Overwatch) and after seeing James Carter had picked up a vita, I decided to blow the dust off mine and start working through some games I've owned for years but not finished or played starting with Gravity Rush.
This has to be one of the best games I've played this year. About 3/4 of the way through it seems to suffer from some overconfidence issues in how good its control system and how many enemies you can fit on a vita screen at once but then towards the end of the game seems to become more aware of that mistake. I can't believe it's taken me this long to play this game. I really enjoyed every aspect of it from the music, art style, theme, humor, story (Even though every part was pretty much a clone of other well known stories. At one point I felt like I was playing Hook) and to a degree the combat. I won't go too in-depth but what I will say is that a) I'm glad this game exists b) I'm glad it got a second release on ps4 and c) I'm glad it's getting a sequel!
If you haven't already played it, as you may be able to tell I'd definitely recommend it! Oo oo oo! I can listen to the podcast now too!

Re: Games completed 2016

I played Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS last year and had a really good time with it, so I decided to go back and play the first one on Gamecube to see how it compared. I love the style and the character of these games and I hope they continue making more in this series. The 3DS sequel improves the gameplay a lot and I thought a few of the boss fights were a bit frustrating on the Gamecube original. But I enjoyed the game overall.

I finally made it through the highly anticipated (by me anyway!) sequel to last-gen sleeper hit Mirror's Edge.
Hmmmm...
...so the game is fine, but the fact that it is just 'fine' actually makes it a bit of a disappointment for someone that so loved the original.
The core gameplay is still there and when you get in the groove the satisfaction delivered by the free-flowing parkour gameplay is as great as ever. The overall aesthetic is also still pretty, although it does lose some of it's impact purely from the fact that we've seen it before vs how brightly it shone back in 2008. The soundtrack is also still cool......
.....so essentially all the things that were good about Mirror's Edge in 2008 are still good now.
The problems start when basically everything they've changed or added since then either has little impact or actually makes the game a bit worse. Making it open world for example is not a good move. The first game was a very tight experience, with each area being designed as an obstacle course to be beaten from beginning to end. They felt precisely engineered and offered great replay value as, much like in a racing game where you strive to improve lap times, there was immense satisfaction in bombing through each level trying to be quicker and slicker than your last run. Going open world means the game has lost that sense of focus, with the environments feeling less well thought out than before. Also, despite the fact that there is all this additional space for you to bounce around in, you do end up largely running the same routes to get around the map, none of which quite reach the heights of the first games courses and things can get repetitious quite quickly. There's a fast travel feature, sure, but the whole point of Mirror's Edge is the joy of environmental traversal, and if you're feeling like you can't be arsed and want to fast travel then something is clearly amiss!
Elsewhere, aside from a few showpiece areas towards the end of the game, graphically this is pretty average by today's standards and feels very much like a mid-tier title that EA and DICE put a small team on while far more resources were spent elsewhere. The overall aesthetic is still appealing as I said before, but some of the textures are bang average, and aside from a couple of prominent characters the quality of NPC models is just plain bad.
The combat is also a bit bobbins. It was a bit bobbins in the first game, and it's still a bit bobbins now, which is a shame given that they seemed so determined to revolutionise things elsewhere. You're also made to do much more of it this time around than in the original game, which seems like an odd design choice seeing as it is so clearly a franchise weakness.
Back to the positives, there's certainly lots to do in this new open City Of Glass. There are a good number of main missions, around 15 side missions (which I completed all of), and then a myriad of time trials, delivery missions, security hubs (fighty bits) and collectables for you to get your teeth into. Much of it amounts to you trying to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, but like I said, when the game nails it that can be immensely fun.
Overall if you're a Mirror's Edge fan then you should absolutely give this a go. Everything you loved about the original is still here, it's just unfortunately accompanied by a big bunch of irrelevant additions as well.
