Spoiler: show
4/01: Rez Infinite
16/01: Journey
20/02: Bastion
20/02: Pokemon Moon
09/03: Grow Home
April 15: Kirby Mass Attack
April 30: Yooka Laylee
June 23: The Last Guardian
July 15: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

Absolute blast I had with this. Just a fun, charming adventure with a well paced, goofy story. The combat system is really a fantastic way to get in new players who might be turned off by the more slow paced turn based battles by turning them into these dynamic battles where you need to be able to read your enemy and react in time to their attacks to counter. The final boss was a really great test of those skills and after losing a couple of times I was countering her attacks no problem (for the most part)! Also the humour is exactly right for a Mario RPG and Luigi was by far the star of the show. The use of the brother's abilities to solve puzzles were always a joy to figure out as well and made exploration just as much fun as battling. This is a fantastic start to what I feel are a sublime series of RPGs.

mikeleddy83 wrote: July 15th, 2017, 2:19 pm Yeah, it's been a (bugs and glitches aside) solid game. I've started on the lifeline dlc, it's a new place and looks like a good state of decay 1.5 if you get the urge to fire it up, a bit more action packed being a military base but with a day of the dead like hook i'm well invested already. My only gripe about the sequel will be that as a solo xbox one player I'll miss some of the co-op stuff it brings. Send me a friend request on the xbox if you pick it up: mikeleddy83
I must have a look at Lifeline then, as soon as I dig myself out of the Factorio-sized hole I'm currently in. It could be an interesting game to revisit. Unfortunately I'm on PC, so no Xbox for me :(

Absolutely stunning game, probably about as good as the “standard model” open world game design can get. Interesting combat, great visuals, very solid plot with some pretty outstanding writing.

In a year with no Breath of the Wild it would easily be my game of the year. As it is... it might still be. Will need to think some more on it though.

Persona 5 - PS4

After the end credits rolled, and I was given my completed game save, I wanted to drive back in straight away. But, alas, I will resist that temptation for the moment (mainly due to that backlog of games that I'm sure everyone here can relate to), and revisit it again somewhere down the line. For the moment, it's nice to just let things sink in, and savour the experience.

Just like 3 and 4, it's not flawless, but I struggle to think of any game that is "perfect" (hmm... maybe Tetris on the original Gameboy, but I'm sure that would be up for debate). One spoiler-free criticism: after spending well over 100 hours with the Japanese audio track, the end credits only displayed the English voice actors. Considering that the Japanese audio option is DLC and optional, I understand why it wasn't included, but it's still a bit disappointing. After all, I now associate those characters with those voices, so it would have been good if the actors got the recognition.

And while Breath of the Wild (Wii U version) still sits on my shelf, waiting to be played, I need something considerable shorter and in a different genre to break it up a bit. Maybe Vanquish (PS3)... it does have a layer of dust on it...

12 Jul: Shadow of Mordor (Xbox One, including DLC)
13 Jul: ABZU (Xbox One, 100% achievements)
18 Jul: Picross 3D Round 2 (3DS)

I think this might be my favourite pure puzzle game ever, and certainly my favourite puzzle game on 3DS. The controls are perfect, the music is unexpectedly wonderful, there's a ridiculous amount of content. This game has actually improved my sleep cycle by being a wonderfully relaxing way to wind down at the end of the day. I have definitely "completed" it now (all rainbow medals and a strict self-imposed "No Mistakes, No Hints" rule from the moment I started) but it's a game I'll definitely return to.

18 Jul: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ (Xbox 360 - 100% achievements)

I bought this in the recent sale and I was not disappointed in my £2 investment! It's such an unexpectedly layered arcade game, and visually arresting to boot. As someone who missed out on most of the coin-op era I've never really got hooked on arcade experiences and high score chasing, but this is so damned fun and addictive that it's staying on my hard drive for good.

Fancied a small little indie title for under £10 for my commutes. Nice short experience, though no real replay value or length to it.

Sort of a point and click based puzzle game with a demented sense of humour and quirky art style. Music reminds me of World of Goo.

Worth a look, but suspect it'll fade from memory fairly fast.

Utterly brilliant. I've been away in Devon for the week with the family and no internet. I loaded up a few Vita and iPad games to take with me, but this was the only one I played really. I've owned it many times on several different formats. I bought it on release for PC, later again on Steam, then Wii and eventually for iPad, which I think is the perfect way to play it. I've done the first world countless times but for whatever reason never stuck with it much past that. Glad I did this time though as the game throws so many brilliant curveballs at you. For instance, I had no idea the game turns in to an Angry Birds type control system for a while later on, and had never experience the ultra-meta virtual world levels either. It's wonderful from start to finish. Gorgeous, charming and a super soundtrack. Loved every minute if it. I presume it's on the long list, right?

After falling hook, line and sinker for Factorio two weeks ago, I have played virtually nothing else since. However, I have managed to finish Batman: Arkham VR on the PSVR today.

It's a glorious tech demo, but somewhat lacking as a game. I was also struggling with the Move controllers, which are new to me, particularly navigating menus. The gameplay is you using a variety of gizmos to solve puzzles, and outside of you being dropped slap bang into luscious environments, is pretty forgettable.

I have also discovered that the PSVR Reddit is populated entirely by total converts and zealots for the cause, meaning no advice on there can be taken without a pinch of salt. Everything is brilliant.

Conarium (PC) has been getting a lot of love recently, so I thought I'd check it out. It's a narrative game based heavily on the work of Lovecraft, and follows an Antarctic expedition on a follow up mission to the team in Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. I didn't know anything about Lovecraft going in, apart from Dark Hams and whatever little I've picked up from random gaming chatter, but it's inspired me to do a bit of background reading.

It's pretty good! It also has a few minor problems, but as the work of a three-person team, it's a big achievement. It's only 3-4 hours long, and is from the walking simulator side of things (you can die, but only in a couple of chase sequences).

So, cut-off Antarctic base, crew have disappeared, potential Elder God involvement; if that's your thing then it is worth checking out.

Really enjoyed this new Hero Mode. Like the game overall, it does kind of feel like more of the same of the first game, but that doesn't make it a bad thing by any stretch. It's still really fun and imaginative with some cool level design and some great music. They have you using all the different weapon types in the game for this time around, which is mostly a good thing. Adds some variety to this mode and lets you get familiar with the different weapons in a safer environment than online matches. It was occasionally frustrating though, when they force you to use a weapon type you don't get on with. But that only happened for a couple of levels for me.

Somewhat unrelated, but I thought I might as well mention it. I feel kind of bad for not posting on the forums lately. Only time I've been around has basically been for this thread. There's not really any reason for it. Except maybe that I have been kind of lagging behind podcasts in general since iTunes decided to totally break since the Windows 10 Creative Update. Perhaps not keeping so closely to the podcast made me not think about the forums so much either. Although, I guess I'm on the site more to actually listen to the episodes when I can, so I guess that doesn't make sense. Whatever, all irrelevant anyway. Splatoon 2 is fun.

Beyond Eyes (PS4)

This is a short, 2-3 hour game which imagines the world from the point of view of a girl who has lost her sight. It's really nice, with environments resembling watercolour paintings that start off blank and are filled in by the girl's touch as she traverses the world. So you don't see the fence at the side of the road until you come up against it, for example. Some lovely touches, for example a woodpecker on a distant tree is a tiny island of colour in the blank canvas.

Unfortunately it suffers from Everybody'sGoneToTheRapture-itis, in that the traversal speed is too slow (as you'd expect from a blind person feeling their way along) and while you can slowly explore the environment, there is usually nothing to discover there, apart from another wall or fence. The area opened up to the girl's sight as she moves along is realistic in the game's terms, but too narrow to be really enjoyable. For example you can move down a street and only reveal one side of it, to reveal the other side you'd have to walk back up that side, where there is nothing interesting, or do a slow zig-zag as you walk down the street to begin with.

It's an interesting game for it's mechanics and art style though, and is on sale at the moment for cheap.

Resident Evil 4 (PS4)

I did it! Kudos to KSubzero for offering advice here which removed some of my anxiety about the game and let me enjoy it rather than worrying about things. There probably isn't anything I can really say about it without sounding foolish, as I don't have much historical context for the game, but I enjoyed it a lot. I had to use a walkthrough for the 'It' and the Krauser boss fights; they are pretty ambitious by today's standards - you can see why modern boss fights just tend to stick you in an arena and that's it. Traversal of the environment plus fighting a boss was very challenging for me.

Question: does anyone know of any criticism that puts the game in it's proper context, ie with what came before and after, that I could read/look at? I watched a Superbunnyhop video that was a bit rubbish.

Edit: Oh, and HowLongToBeat really let me down on this one. 16 hours apparently. It took me 25

I can't vouch for its quality as it was very early in our existence and I haven't heard it back for 5+ years, but...
