There used to be a 3v3 tournament for charity played between the various Guildford game developers. Some of them took it very seriously, one studio had to have internal playoffs to pick their team...

(We also had a Halo 3 tournament as well for a while, but one of the studios brought in some esports players as ringers which seemed a bit against the spirit of the thing)

Just started Rise of the Tomb Raider. Very pretty game. Waiting for it to get exciting, though. And I miss my damn tombs!

I used to play Halo 3 with Liam and the Lionhead crew a long while back.

Some of the guys there were another level.

It’s where it taught me the lingo and effectiveness for call outs etc...

Those were the days.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon got much more challenging on the final stage, but again, with some perseverance and experimentation you get there after a few goes. I am a bit frustrated by the final, final boss though - it takes quite a lot of experimentation, so the previous checkpoint being before the first phase is a real pain as that one’s not exactly a walkover either! I’ve just about got it worked out now though, so one more go...

I am absolutely loving Tecmo Bowl which came with the new Switch online service. Never played it before, but as a relative newcomer to American football, it suits me perfectly. It doesn’t look great, but it’s easy to play and controls brilliantly. I’d have payed the subscription cost just for that! Unlike NES Soccer, which is just so slow - no idea what made anyone to decide to include that dog in the 20 games on there!

Yeah, I remember trying to play NES Soccer as part of GC Animal Crossing back in 2003. Sadly excruciating.

I really enjoyed that game, on both difficulty modes. Was a great time.

Mudrunner: Spintires and Kerbal Space Program are both cheap enough for me to try out at last. I don't expect they are really my thing, but I am curious.

Playing a bit of the former at the moment. I started my first job at 8.00am game time; it is now 12.10am and I have just managed my first pickup, and am lost in a Siberian bog. I'd describe it as a cross between QWOP, Forestry Simulator, and Blair Witch Project.

I'm at around the 40 hour mark in Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS, and I'm afraid that my character, not me, has developed a bit of a gambling addiction. Having trouble leaving the casino.

Again, this is a role-playing game, so I have not developed a gambling problem, I am role-playing a character that has developed a gambling problem. I feel very bad for him. :(

I blew almost every penny I had on the slots in Shenmue the other night.

 :(

I popped on Rocket League last night out of curiosity. I’ve not played it since launch on PS+ but saw it on Gamepass and decided to revisit it.

Turns out it’s bloody brilliant and even though I was rubbish at it, I was having a brilliant time. I found it hilarious, exciting and dramatic.

I've been playing Sisters Royale, a Japanese eShop only cute-em-up. It's...ok. The graphics have that Clash of Clans/Fortnite/Sea of Thieves/mobile game/very low-rent Pixar aesthetic which makes everything look like it's made of sand-brushed plasticine and which I find quite off-putting. It's hard to describe because it actually looks quite smart and consistent, but there are so many textures out there these days which look absolutely identical. Can anyone please reassure me that I'm not drawing a line between several totally disparate things? Is it linked to the dominance of certain engines or graphic design software? Anyway, it doesn't really fit a shmup, to my mind. Lines aren't clean and straight enough and the 3D elements provide little more than visual noise.

Other than that, multiple characters which play quite differently, different specials and bombs (more different than Tengai), bit of story stuff in Japanese, presumably centred around why these young women are wearing monocles and corsets, and would they like some tea, that kind of thing. I can't understand because it's in Japanese.

So everybody should rush out and buy Spintires in the PSN sale. I am serious :D

It really is excellent. It's hard to say what spot it hits, but somewhere between a Zen game that you can listen to podcasts while you play (think Elite Dangerous or No Man's Sky), and some kind of mind bending traversal puzzle. And bog snorkelling..

Seriously though, it is good. The maps are very big, and your impact on the environment is persistent. So that tricky corner that you churned up delivering your first load of logs? It's even more of a nightmare next time, now that it's been turned to shite by your amateur manoeuvres. The game is much more compelling than it has any right to be.

I also started the first Deus Ex. That's a game I've started and stopped a bunch of times, must have done that training course five times now...
After doing the first mission, I'm less then thrilled about playing through the whole game, but the part of me that wants to play all the games ever is committed this time.

Really interested in this, but wish there was a demo. I notice on PSN there are two very generous free DLC packs. Two entire maps and five brand new vehicles across both packs, along with other additions.

Been trying to get my head around Crusader Kings 2 for the first time this week. Found this review of it which is pretty hilarious:

Woo hoo!

I’m playing on casual; the other option is hardcore which doesn’t look too bad but you can’t skip nighttime etc. I might give it a go later on.

@Alex: yeah, there is a link in the game menu and I thought I’d throw them a few quid, and then it’s free 😀

Still playing Horizon: Zero Dawn and Final Fantasy 6.

30 hours into HZD and I've gotten very comfortable dealing with a lot of the machines now so I'm moving quite quickly around the map compared to early on. I want to snipe everything with the precision bow. I don't care for the collectables dotted around the map so I just focus on the main and side quests and also tallnecks and cauldrons (they're too useful to ignore).

18 hours into FF6. Spoiler for a 24 year old game due to the upcoming podcast.
Spoiler: show
Not long into the World of Ruin, close to getting the airship. If I recall correctly from my previous playthrough the game becomes quite open-ended at this point. I think I dropped it there last time. I'll see how I get on this time.
Enjoying it quite a bit, maybe not as much as 5, as the job system there has aged quite well I think.
