Unfortunately it was the season where the game decided it would do everything it could to get me fired, so it wasn't actually very enjoyable.
I might continue on the next season a bit to see if things swing back my way.

Finished the season one story content, leaves it open for more seasons of course but it’s a decently long campaign anyway.
I like it, but I still think it’s hard to recommend to anyone that isn’t fairly knowledgable on Warhammer 40k lore. This game does not explain what it’s talking about at all, you either know it cause you’re a fan or you’ll be utterly lost by the plot.
It still need more polish as well, but it has had bug fixes and ui work done since it launched so I’m reasonably sure they’re at least still working on it.
So if you’re a massive 40k nerd like me it might be worth your time. Everyone else should just play Diablo 3, it’s better.
Re: Games Completed 2018
In fairness, I'd had a great run of injury luck in the previous four seasons, so maybe the game was justified injuring all my players, turning the rest rubbish etc. It should have been a good challenge, but felt so unfair and malicious I couldn't really enjoy it.Joshihatsumitsu wrote: October 15th, 2018, 10:29 pm Considering my real world sporting team fired the head coach during their most successful season in quite a few years (lost in the finals), perhaps Park Baseball is getting it right!

Finished Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It's my least favorite so far, just didn't pack the same scares or fun as the first two. It did have it's moments, but it was something I had to force myself to finish.

Never managed to beat an NES game before, and not sure I could have done so here were it not for the ability to save my game A LOT.
I was really surprised how well the game held up. Considering I've played games like Celeste and Shovel Knight this year, I don't think this game was a million miles off their quality.
It had a wealth of ideas in it too that I've not seen repeated in subsequent Mario titles, though I also found it slightly outstayed it's welcome. I've no idea how you could have beaten that back in the day.
And also the castle levels where you have to randomly find a block or hidden door to advance were largely bullshit.
But all in all, given its age, it's fairly ridiculous how well it plays today and how ahead of its time it must have been. Still worthy of your time even now.

Back in the day the warp whistles were your friend in Mario Bros 3.
I just watched it on YouTube now. I found 2 out of 3 myself back in 91 and the first one was in a magazine

Nier (endings A-D)
Wow. I’m probably talking nonsense but I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a game as much as this for a long time. I appreciate that parts of the combat, game design and aesthetic aren’t always stellar but the overall package is astounding.
I’m genuinely excited about playing nier automata.

Not much to say really, everyone knows what it is. I really enjoyed revisiting this game, which I first finished back on 360 around original release time. Ezio remains one of the best protagonists in video games, I think. Looking forward to replaying the other two games on the collection.

Re: Games Completed 2018

Just finished it after a long Saturday morning lie-in designed to do just that.
I think the epic scope of the story was the main draw back in the day here and 24 years has taken a bit of a toll on it. It kinda loses its way in the World of Ruin as the open world structure, which is an interesting development in such an old Japanese RPG, as characters have good moments but means I went 15 hours without interacting with the main plot.
The gameplay effectively has 3 quirks to the battle system. The first are the characters individual moves, which while interesting are usurped in the second half of the game by the other two to the point where I just didn't use them. Relics are equipable items (up to two per character) and while early on they give small stat boosts or protect from certain ailments, its later on where they give FF5 style abilities such as dual wield, X Magic (or dualcast) etc where they become a vital part to succeeding. The esper/magic system is probably interesting if you get into the minutiae of stat growth but as that is not my thing I just tried to give everyone as many spells as possible which became a bit dull.
Graphically the game looks great and is a large improvement over the previous SNES games and Uematsu composes another magnificent soundtrack. I think there is a great jump in the quality of his work between 4 and 5 in the series.
Overall, if I played FF6 in the 90s I probably would have loved its epic quest but now it is just a good game to me. FF5 offered something more interesting to me in 2018 (the job system) and therefore is my favourite of the pre-PS1 Final Fantasies.
Also the PS1 version is not the way to play the game due to its load times, its just a sign of how much I love the Vita as a physical machine that I was willing to do so.
This leaves me with one game left to complete the first ten Final Fantasies, Final Fantasy 8. I'll wait until I see when the CaR team are covering it before I start.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Unlike games from other genres FPS games don’t tend to age that well and I found this quite grating if I’m honest. I can see how call of duty was a natural progression after this but having been spoilt over the years it’s hard to still enjoy this game.

Re: Games Completed 2018
Finished The Evil Within, took me about 13 and a half hours according to game clock. A very interesting title and one which has shades of so many other games. Some times it felt like Resident Evil, Last of Us, Manhunt and Silent Hill whilst keeping its own identity intact too.
The combat felt okay, but ramps up when you get the agony crossbow which allows you to take down enemies in different ways. The stealth optional gameplay felt entirely redundant. The few times I used it during the "being chased" moments ended up in death anyway as they seem to know where I was despite being hidden. Same goes for the burning the bodies mechanic, it really felt upto me when to use a match and even though you get used to when you should be using them I can't help but feel I wasted a lot early on.
The game encourages running away, fighting and using traps against enemies which really pulled me through this horror game. I really enjoy it when you feel under pressure from the monstrosities coming your way but you have a few options to deal with the situation. If you're low on ammo or want to conserve, you can knee cap 'em and burn 'em or you can simply run away which gives you less green gel rewards to level but it's an option all the same.
The games final third is a bit guff, though. So many gimmicks, one hit kill bosses and generally other bits an bobs which weren't part of the first 2 thirds. It needed shortening, editing and fat trimming, basically.
Overall, I think it's solid. It's not up there with Dead Space or Resi 4 for me but if you're a surival horror fan, i'd implore you to play this before the Resi 2 remake comes out because I've got a feeling that's going to raise a few bars and then we'll have a harder time looking back on mikami's under appreciated rough gem of a game.

It’s obviously not big news that this is great.
There’s some of the best environment traversal ever in a videogame (play Sunset Overdrive if you like this game dammit!). The fluid combat has just the right amount of depth. It’s an audio visual masterclass from the beautifully seamless animation to the dynamic, Avengers-infused score. Plus the characterisation and storytelling consistently creates a host of triumphant, exhilarating and moving moments throughout, including one of the best video game romances I can remember.
It’s not without its flaws, which are mainly linked to its open world box ticking nature. The map is littered with icons and busywork, which I found had an adverse affect on the pace and urgency of the plot if you got too side-tracked by it all. You could also argue that while the combat has depth with all the moves, gadgets and suit powers on offer, none of it ever feels essential and you could probably button-bash your way through the game if you’re of a mind to. I’d be generous and say that actually makes the game more accessible and gives the player control over how they want to play, but I might also just be being a bit soft because I like the game so much.
These gripes aside, the only major thing I don’t like is the fact it’s not on every platform so that more people can play it. Not the game’s fault of course, but it’s a shame Xbox, PC and Switch players get left out of this one (although this might be a leap too far for the latter!).
Oct - Ryse: Son of Rome (Xbox One X)
I’d been wanting to play this ever since the Xbox One launch. I even borrowed it from a friend and played an hour or so before putting it down and giving it back due to being so absorbed in Forza at the time. The reviews were never great, but I was always seduced by the beautiful visuals and a period setting I always find alluring, so I've always intended to go back.
So while waiting for the massive 60gb Forza Horizon 4 download to finish and looking for something to fill an afternoon, I stumbled across Ryse once again (I can’t remember whether it was a GwG title or something I’d downloaded from Game Pass on a whim). Remembering it was supposed to be a relatively short 6-7 hour-ish campaign, I booted the game up and began slaying barbarians!
And you know what – it isn’t half bad! There’s not a lot of depth there and yes it can be a bit repetitive, but what is there I found to be satisfying limb severing, bone-crunching stuff. It’s also absolutely gorgeous, and the fact this is a launch game that stands up so well to this day is a real testament to the team at Crytek.
For me though the game is worth a playthrough for the scenery-chewing villains alone. There are some properly nasty pieces of work in here, realised through some excellent motion capture and brilliant VO work. The same can be said for most of the game’s main characters actually, which all have fantastically detailed models brought to life with some committed performances from the cast. Yes it’s a bit silly at times, but it was always entertaining.
So if you’re stuck for something to play of an afternoon and you have a penchant for Romans, gore, and shiny graphics, then give it a go! I was pleasantly surprised!

A decent puzzle game, short with fairly limited mechanics, but worth a play if you like Braid/PB Winterbottom etc. Free this month on PS Plus so grab it while you can if you like your puzzle games.
