Was coming to this thread to specifically say that I've started Akira, finally. It has such a tremendous sense of place and the colour palette is magnificent. The anime is obviously wonderful but this is something else. I'm genuinely thrilled.
I’m reading the black and white version. I had a look at the colour version but I genuinely preferred this one (and being able to pick it up used at literally a 3rd or the price helps!)

You’re totally right about the sense of place. I think it’s because the characters aren’t constantly talking about *future things* on behalf of the reader. They just seem to live in the world.

Anyone going to watch Titans on Netflix? Just saw the trailer and it looks pretty good! Better than Gotham, anyway!

EDIT: I couldn't wait for the UK release and watched it via more nefarious means. Holy shit the first episode was awesome!

I'd wondered if it would be something I could watch with the kids. Ten minutes in Robin is breaking bones and blood spraying everywhere. Coupled with the "Fuck Batman" quip after the fight, no, it's not something I can watch with the children!

Ha, yeah. I don't have the DC app and the darker DC stuff tends not to work for me. But, I have a friend who watched the pilot and he enjoyed it for the most part and it already got renewed for a second season!

Well if they have seen the success of Daredevil for Marvel and are copying that template that is fine with me.

I've just finished the Magneto series by Cullen Bunn. It was fantastic half the time, bogged down by Marvel events the other half. But, when it was allowed to be it's on thing, it was this grim, Punisher-like story of old man making life worse for those who hurt mutants. Magneto is at a lower power level during most of the run, so the small, nasty things he does with metal made me grimace once or twice...

I'm a huge fan of the Titans, and to say this new series totally misses the point of the characters is an understatment.

It's just dark and gritty for the sake of it, and while yes many old Titans tales do have their dark aspects, they were never done in a way that makes the premise so adult.

Hmm, yeah it does seem excessive for the sake of it as you say, still enjoyed the first episode though.

I'm not really that familiar with the Titans, having only ever read The Judas Contract myself.

Just finished the Nightwing New 52 run. Really enjoyed it, he's such a great character. I've never read any of his books outside of his appearances in Batman, so it was a nice surprise. May go back and check out some earlier titles.

Having never really been a fan of crossover events and actively disliked the handful I've read (Final Crisis? Final Shitesis more like, right??) I've always avoided them.

However, a throwaway line at the end of Nightwing New 52 has caused me to feel the need to read DC's Forever Evil event. Of course, when I looked in to it, this meant I had to start with Trinity Wars, so I'll be doing that.

I'm kind of looking forward to getting to know some of DC's major players better, since as I've mentioned before I've only ever really bothered with the Bat.

It's had a decent reception it seems, anyone else read it?

Thanks - that's gone on the back burner just whilst I work through the Legend Of The Dark Knight series from 1989 onwards. Some awesome story arcs - Shaman, Gothic, Prey and Venom. All absolute classics!

I just read Prey this summer, it was great! The Scarecrow story right after, not so much, but it all works out to be an entertaining story. Actually, I read that, Batman and the Monster Men, and Strange Apparitions all next to each other and it was the most Hugo Strange has ever been in my life!

Stan Lee dies, aged 95. A true legend and a hero, one of the most inspirational and visionary writers of all time, and a genuinely heartfelt thank you for all the incredible stories you gave the world.

Yeah, that was a rough way to start out the week. I still submit his original run on Amazing Spider-Man is fantastic and very readable today.
My first memory of him is playing the 2000 PS1 version of Spider-Man and his narration going along with the game. He was just great at infecting you with his own enthusiasm.

I just finished Vol. 7 of Tom King's Batman run. The Wedding one. I'm pretty disappointed.
Spoiler: show
I never believed the wedding was going to happen/last but to have it all be concluded in an anti-climatic way, with break up letters in King's pretentious writing style was a real letdown. King's run has been interesting but never great, at least for me. And that Booster Gold story was crazy, in all the wrong ways.

Yeah really disappointed me also. The court case one after with Freeze is amazing though.

I have been watching the Elseworlds crossover with Flash/Arrow/Supergirl and I have to say it is an amazing piece of fan service with a ridiculous amount of Easter Eggs that is worth a watch even if you are not a fan of the series individually.

Batwoman TV series would be welcome now too.

I've been re-reading the new editions of Knightfall. There's so much more content than when I read them 20+ years ago. Enjoying it muchly.

I'm reading the Tom King run in trade from, so it makes certain things even more frustrating, like avoiding spoilers for six months only to realize there's nothing to spoil. Of course, I'm going to stick with the series, so I'll look forward to the Freeze story!

And Elseworlds finally inspired my wife and I to get off our duffs and catch up on the CW shows. We're still in 2016 seasons, just finished the Invasion crossover with all four shows. She's watching Flash and Arrow with me, I'm watching Supergirl and Legends alone. But, we're back to enjoying the shows again! Heck, I even went back to finish the first season of Gotham...

I remember really liking the first volume of Knightfall, with the Asylum breakout and villain hunt. I also remember not liking the post-back-break material, mainly all the Azrael stuff. How's that part fairing these days?

Well, enjoying the story, hating Azreal as Batman. I don't think you're supposed to like him, though. I can't imagine reading this story as it was released month by month back in the day. It went on for over a year, and that's a long time to have a really shitty Batman!
