Finished the first of three spyro games in the remake trilogy.

A bit too simplistic for my tastes but fun enough to see it through with little one. Only 4 hours long which is just as well given the repetition of the level design and collectibles

Spoiler: show
Jan - The Turing Test (Xbox One)
Feb - Split Second/Velocity (Xbox 360)
Feb - Tales From The Borderlands (Xbox One)
Apr - Lego Harry Potter Years 1 - 4 (Xbox 360)
May - Lego City: Undercover (Xbox One)
June - Quantum Break (Xbox One)
August 30th - The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (Xbox One)
November - Resident Evil 5 (PS3) (again)
November - Resident Evil 6 (PS3) (again)

So, as a result of the recent podcasts, my wife and I returned to this series - not necessary playing in order but ultimately playing through every chapter on both and all emblems found on both (after a catatrophic console failure a couple of years ago wiped out my saved game progress on almost every PS3 game played in this decade)

I've expounded on my views on the various forum threads on Resident Evil and I'm not rehashing it here more than to say as a couch co-op experience they both work; and that I still don't like almost all of the enemies that have a one-hit kit (reapers, crocodiles, rasklapanjes, ubistvo ...) or the inconsistent QTE timing (especially in RE6)

It's been a long time since I first played this on the 360, but it was good to revisit on the Switch. It holds up pretty well, and suits the portable nature of the console too. It's quick to pick up and play, it provides a lot of entertainment value relative to how much effort you have to put in, and in portable mode it actually makes the art look better in some ways. Being it was originally made for the previous generation consoles, I would assume all the art was drawn for 720 resolution. So that fits perfectly in to the Switch's own screen, while there are a few rough edges when upscaled in docked mode. Not that it looks bad by any means, but still. It makes character portraits in dialogue scenes look noticeably cleaner.

Outside of the context of the platform it's on, it's still just as good a game as it always was. It has really fantastic controls that feel extremely fluid and responsive. Controlling Dust himself is a joy. He's really well animated too, with great hand-drawn art that's still impressive. Combat is very fun, but still kind of shallow. It's fast and flashy, with good audio design, but there isn't much range to your abilities. It's kind of spammy, and the Dust Storm attack is pretty overpowered. But it's still a great time just tearing through enemies like you can. Not that there's no challenge or thought to it at all. Parrying enemies requires a finer touch, and bosses don't go down so easily. But still, the game doesn't offer a huge amount of resistance to your gleeful rampage. The story hasn't held up quite as well though. Knowing the big reveal that happens later on takes some of the mystery out of it, so the question of who Dust really is takes a lot of the wind out of the sails of the narrative. The writing is pretty hokey and cliched, but the voice acting is still pretty impressive. And I would be lying to say that the ending didn't get to me a bit even now. Fidget is still a really fun character too. Something which I think is quite impressive. Even after all these years, she's still funny and charming, despite being the perfect recipe for an annoying furry comedy sidekick.

I've heard a lot of good things about this one but didn't entirely know what it was about. It has a ton of stealth where a failure is a death which came as a surprise. The combat tries to go for what Ocarina of Time did except the lock on is automatic so there were plenty of times it would lock on to the wrong enemy.

The story itself is fine with nothing particularly noteworthy. It does have a plot twist but it wasn't thought out very well since it all gets dumped at you in a cutscene in the final dungeon.

Ultimately, I liked what I played but didn't think it anything special. Maybe if I played it closer to its original release.

Nov 23 - Asura: Vengeance Expansion (PC)

More random roguelites. This one goes for the ARPG approach and even randomizes the skill tree you get each run. It does have a giant flaw, though. It has does a bad job of balancing things. Magic attacks require long windups, leaving you vulnerable. Melee attacks are fine but, well, require melee, and it makes avoiding everything very difficult. Ranged attacks are ridiculously strong and the only downside is that it needs ammo, something that you should never run out of. The choice is pretty obvious.

There are also multiple difficulty levels. The first two end up being pretty easy. The third one says "screw the player" and makes enemies do so much damage to you that you die in only a couple hits, sometimes less. It's not good.

Nov 26 - Bayonetta (Switch)

I've always been curious on this game and now that I've had a chance to play it, I'd say it isn't that good. It has the spectacle of everything going for it but that is about it. Inconsistent rules in the gameplay killed things for me. You are told witch time activates on near dodges except some attacks and enemies don't trigger it and the only way to figure that out will probably result in you eating many attacks. There are plenty of instakill QTEs (bad in itself) but it seems a coin flip if an action during a cutscene is going to have a button prompt or not. There is also one non-instakill QTEs that I ran into where by the time the button prompt appeared on screen, the attack was already hitting you. There is also a section where you and the angels you fight are in separate realms so you need to use physical objects to defeat them. The problem is that the separate realm fights pop up a few times and yet it is only that one time you are required to do that. The rest you can just attack them as normal.

Next is the camera. It is crucial to have a camera in these types of games keep a view on the action or make it controllable enough to do so. The lock-on button is ZR (no press/hold option, its always hold). Dodge is R. With normal controller holding, there is no way to lock-on to an enemy while being able to dodge on a moment's notice. Why aren't one of those on an L button when those are just taunt and weapon swap, things that are much less urgent, I have no idea. There is no rebinding buttons, either (this feature should have been standard long ago). Mastery probably lets you ignore these issues but I'm no master, nor plan to be. Bring on all the stone awards. Oddly enough, the bosses were the easiest things to get better awards on.

Lastly is the story. It is there, I guess. An excuse to punch and shoot your way through the hordes of angels. The problem I have with it is that two characters that are given a lot of screen time and you'd think would be important to the plot are completely pointless. Take them out of the game and nothing would change. It was just a waste of time to have them there.

I've been told Bayonetta 2 changes pretty much everything I've mentioned above but I'll get to that one at a later date.

I had, unfortunately, a very busy year so I haven't played a lot of games (and the ones I played were quite lengthy). In no particular order (i could forgot about something as well):

Assassins Creed Odyssey (PC)
Shadow of Tomb Raider (PC)
God of War (PS4)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)
Spiderman (PS4)

Feb – Destiny 2 (XOX)
Feb – Snake Pass (Switch)
Mar – NBA Playgrounds (Switch)
Apr – Assassin’s Creed Origins (XOX)
May - Vanishing Of Ethan Carter (PS4Pro)
May - CoD: Infinite Warfare (PS4 Pro)
Jun – The Wolf Among Us (XOX)
Aug – Red Dead Redemption (XOX)
Aug - Bayonetta (Switch)
Aug - Subsurface Circular (Switch)
Sep - A Way Out (XOX)
Oct - Spider-Man (PS4 Pro)
Oct - Ryse: Son Of Rome (XOX)

Nov - Florence (iOS)

Played through this last month. Only takes 45 mins and costs just a few quid. A lovely little game that taps into a life experience I’m sure most of us are all too familiar with. It does it in a sweet, genuine and touching way that stirred more emotion in me than most 100 hour epics. It also shows what an innovative and legitimate gaming platform mobile can be for any platform snobs out there ;)

Dec - Forza Horizon 4 (XOX)

It will surprise absolutely no-one that this is bloomin’ brilliant from Playground Games, as ever.

This year they’ve made it even more of a live online ‘game as a service’ type offering, with you sharing your instance of the world with a host of other real players and live events popping up pretty often. It’s a well implemented evolution for the series and is as involving/intrusive as you want it to be. People can’t crash into you when you’re cruising round the map so there are no griefing problems, plus you can just choose to not connect to the servers if you want be to really hardline about solo play.

The other major new edition, the changing of the seasons based on a global online cycle, is also brilliantly implemented. There are genuine impacts felt in gameplay that’ll cause you to reconsider your car selection and set-up, and even just on a pure aesthetic level the dramatic change in the look and feel of the world is incredibly impressive.

If you’re UK based there’s also a particular pleasure in blasting through a mini UK, from the country lanes of the Lake District to the city streets of Edinburgh and much more besides.

The cherry on top is if you’ve got Game Pass it’s all included in your subscription!

Good times!

Counted this as one completion, because if Kojima can’t decide how many credit rolls he wants to have I can count them as one game.

I like the way it plays. A lot. But my word the plot in these things is almost approaching Kingdom Hearts levels of convoluted now, especially after all the ‘what a tweest!’ moments.

We’ll probably never know where Kojima actually intended the plot to go from here, maybe that’s not a bad thing. Heh.

I LOVED this game. Arthur Morgan is one of my favourite video game protagonists and out shines John Marston by quite a lot. (The REAL ending is too long and drawn out though.)

Finished this (again) a couple of weeks ago. I genuinely don't understand how this game never quite took off in the way, say for example, Hollow Knight did. It really is a brilliant game, and much closer to a 2D Dark Souls than Hollow Knight (not that I'm necessarily suggesting that's what Hollow Knight was aiming for, but it's an often made comparison). I thought both games were excellent, but overall I think I got more out of S&S, I just love it.

Vergil is a little bit odd in this game. A lot of the time he feels amazing to play, and can tear through so much stuff that is a lot trickier on other characters. But sometimes he has huge problems that others don't. Stuff that would be hard with them too, but here it's way more so. So the difficulty is a bit wonky at times. Through a lot of it you almost feel overpowered, like against Echidna or Sanctus. But Credo is significantly harder than usual, Blitz is a damn nightmare. You'd expect him to actually be really good against Blitz thanks to his ghost swords, but I always find dodging its attacks way harder.

Astrobot (PSVR)

Quite entertaining.

X4: Foundations (PC)

I've lost the entire last week to the latest in the X Series from Egosoft - a long-running space logistics and combat game, with the emphasis on building an empire. You may remember the catastrophic launch of its predecessor, X: Rebirth, a few years ago. While it is a sandbox-type game, I think I have achieved most of my (peaceful) goals for the moment, which mainly involved building massive production complexes in space.

On the final push now to get three more games finished before the end of the year in order to meet my arbitrary 70% completion rate of games I've bought this year.

Another roguelite for the pile. This one has card based combat. You build up your deck to take out the enemies. Clear thee dungeons with your chosen class to win. Every class has their own deck to start with and a different perk. A good concept but it has a big flaw. Grinding is mandatory. You gain skill points from winning fights that are used as powerups that persist between deaths. You simply start way too weak without these to be able to clear the game on the first or several later runs.

Dec 4 - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Switch)

It is unabashedly Castlevania. Specifically Castlevania 3. It is exactly what you expect and still good fun.

Dec 7 - The Tenth Line (PC)

An RPG with a rather unique battle system. You select what attacks you want to do in the round with all your characters and then press their corresponding button during the attack. Different attacks have different amounts of guard break or launch and areas the attack hits on the enemy group (gets up to 15 at a time) to determine the order you want each attack to go in. You also need to time your blocks/dodges during their attacks to minimize your own damage. Makes for a neat system.

The story in general is fine. The character motivations for joining and staying with your party are extremely weak, though.
