at that point it really started to hit home that it was meant to be an MMORPG and was cut down to a single player due to certain restraints.

Great game, but could have been so much better.

There's a whole backstory around nearly bankrupting a state in the US that I am aware of but won't go into detail here!
I've looked in to the story of the game too, and it's certainly interesting stuff. Although it's actually not true that this game was supposed to be an MMO. What actually happened was that 38 Studios created the IP with the intention of creating an MMO that never came out. Probably why they put all that effort in to building the lore. But the project ran in to trouble and was taking a long time, so they decided they wanted to put out something else first to introduce the IP and get some more money rolling in. So they found Big Huge Games, who had already started work on what would become Reckoning, and then decided to re-tool it to become part of the KoA IP. The cancelled MMO was being created under the code name of Project Conpernicus, and a little bit of footage of it leaked out once 38 Studios went bankrupt.

Reckoning does have something of a "single player MMO" feel to it though. While the combat is completely different, and something that was probably impossible to have done in an MMO at the time, the world structure and quest design do feel kind of MMO-ish. The aesthetic too perhaps.

Spent a bit of time with Hades this morning, the early-access roguelite from SuperGiant. At the start I was pretty turned off by the aesthetic, and Greek mythology is boooooorrriiing, but it has started to grow on me. I've reached the first area boss, who is completely overwhelming on first sight; time will tell if she gets easier to deal with.

They mix things up reasonably - the doors are labelled, so you can sometimes choose what type of encounter you want next. There is some procedural generation of levels, though they are rather samey - I've done about 12 runs now and they have all been pretty similar. I've been mostly relying on my ult/special which is an aoe attack, rather than the bow (which I find fiddly) or the sword (dashing in and out is a bit of a pain as there are tonnes of traps around the place).

The big issue for me so far is that it is very hard to recover health once you lose it, though there are rooms with healing fountains and the like which I may be missing (haven't figured out what all the icons on the doors mean yet).

So yeah, it's got upsides and downsides. Definitely getting that 'one more turn' vibe, as the item and ability progression seems to be moving along at a right old clip.

Edit: Oh! The current build sometimes has a bit of screen lag or shuddering/jerkiness seemingly at random, which is a bit offputting. This happens in empty rooms too so it's not down to enemies on screen, though that can be quite hectic at times.

Edit 2: that could be my settings of course.

DRM free here if that's your bag - https://www.kartridge.com/games/kebabsk ... her-demons
Also on switch - https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Ninten ... 45458.html

You can turn off the screenshake.
A single screen (but scrolling up and down) single stick deal with dodge and stomp and double jump (hold to float). Some balancing issues, I mean I really worked for my high score and then on my next run I chose the melee guy, my first upgrade was to sacrifice all but three hearts for "something something combo" and then after that I got some decent health upgrades which negated the loss so it was like free superscore and I nearly beat my score in way less time. I mean, I died to a stupid death and didn't quite manage it, but still. Maybe that upgrade should lock you to three hearts so it's a super risky thing to do.

It's really good fun. I like it!

Tetris 99

Giving me a reason to play this other than to get hammered by other players was a masterstroke from Nintendo - I worked on unlocking the Game Boy theme which was a lot of fun, and it made me realise how good the game is too - I'm definitely going to have a bash now and again. Best I came was 11th or something in the run of games, it was fun.
Same here, my eldest and I took turns. He got the highest with a 20 something place. I never got above 40! I'm actually pretty decent at normal Tetris but this is really hard!

I wish there had been a Fable 4, hope the series gets revived at some point.
I think we might see something this e3. It’s been an open secret for a while now that playground are probably working on it. (Or something very similar at least, if it turns out not to actually be a Fable game)
Ah cool man!

Tetris 99 has gone turbo.

I’ve had a few 2nd’s since it launched but when I logged in to get the GameBoy skin reward, the highest I got was 11 out of about 10 games.

The overall skill level has increased dramatically.

Still great fun though.

The most funny thing about Tetris 99 for me is seeing people playing it on twitch, these hardcore twitch streamer types, and they’re getting beat by people with gamer tags like ‘I love my kids 67’ and ‘coolmom76’.

My mum was significantly better at gameboy Tetris than I ever was, and it appears to be universal :)

I'm pretty happy with my playtime in Hades now; I've beaten two bosses and got to the third (and currently final) area in the game. However, being put back to the start has dampened my enthusiasm for playing all the way through again.

My most successful run was helped by a fantastic series of power ups where I could deflect enemies' attacks back at them, strike them with lightning if they or I took damage, and damage them just by dashing out of the way - I think I pretty much beat the second boss just by dashing.

Shelving it for now, I think; roll on Slay the Spire tomorrow.

I love all those classic photo's of 90's Mum's surrounded by kids playing GameBoy's.

That cool one of Hilary Clinton, who was first lady at the time on Air Force one with her GameBoy too.

There certainly was a draw to the grey little box.

Awesome.

When I went to uni I was made to leave my gameboy behind because my mum couldn’t bear to be parted from Tetris.

I was a pretty fortunate kid in that respect, computers and games consoles were always in the house from around the time I turned 6.

Devil May Cry 5

I really want to play through this as I've finished every other game in the franchise, but I'm struggling. It's just not a very good game.

The combat isn't a patch on what we had in the previous instalments, especially 3.

The locations you find yourself in are so bland, and are just recycled through the levels. Compare the look of this game to the last gen DMC and it's night and day. DMC was so creative and looked stunning.

I'm just over half way through, which didn't take too long to be fair, but I don't know if I can be bothered to play to the end.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

I've been working through a few games that I started but didn't finish, and this is the latest of those I've gone back to. After finishing God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn, this will be my next game to play to the end.

I had an hour or so on it last night and really enjoyed what I played. I can't really say why it got put on the back burner.

Slay the Spire since 7am this morning :D

I'm playing a 'strength build' of my own devising; I just looked up 'strength build' online and I literally have none of the cards they recommend, so that's good.

Great game; Switch owners should obviously hold out but for PS4....

Back onto Mortal Kombat 11 for me, still trying to find a character I really like to put time into learning.

Played Kitana a lot, but I’m finding that most of her strength comes from her large number of strings that you can special cancel. It’s effective, but you have to hold a lot more in your head at once than I really can. (Some of her strings are 7 presses long... that’s getting into original Killer Instinct levels of memory)

Switched over to Skarlet yesterday and she seems to be closer to my favoured style (zoning with a few simple strings to push the opponent back out to zoning range if they’ve closed in).

I have a quandary.

I've been playing and very much enjoying Yoshi's Crafted World. I've finished the game unlocked all the hidden worlds and I'm a very good way to 100%'n everything. I'm at just under 40 hours so far.

During the mop up, you'll be asked to go and find all of the Sunflowers, red coins and crafted items in the backgrounds.

As well as that, in the Boss levels (which are their own single experience world spots) you'll be asked to collect three Sunflowers that are tied to typical task for that Boss.

Things like, - Don't get hit, beat the boss quickly and interrupt their move cycle.

It's been quite fun working out how to do those task on some of the bosses require Wooly World levels of inputs, control and haste.

Until you unlock the bonus world's boss fight.

This fight is hard, I'm talking solid. Took me about two sessions to manage to do it.

I'm not quiet there yet, (as I'm doing the usual clear a world and move on system) but once I get to the boss fight, its all over, its ends there.

I'll never be able to do that level in the bonus tasks.

The final level is hard as it is but there's one key factor that makes it super super tricky again. Then, even thinking about attempting it without getting hit is making not want to pop the cart back in.

I think I'm done. Screw that level.

Don't say that! I'm sure it's feasible.

Just Final Fantasy 12 on Switch recently. Its the first time I've given it a go since the PS2 original in 2008. I'm 24 hours in and just left the bunny girl village. This game is still beautiful even if the character models show their PS2 roots.

The plot is only ok to be honest,
Spoiler: show
the interesting stuff seems to be happening within Archadia's political circles (which I'm not directly involved in) and I'm not fully invested in Ashe as a character and her conflict on how best to lead Dalmasca (which I think is the main driving force for the party right now).
I love this soundtrack. Its been a regular listen for me outside of the game for a long time.

The ability to speed up the game is brilliant here. Coupled with the gambit system, traveling by foot and defeating regular enemies is a breeze and a relaxing way to level up. Good for the commutes too. I've kept it to 2x rather than 4x though.

I think this is true of the original but the game is very dark in places (mines, caves and deep forests have all made an appearance). I would like an in game brightness/gamma option, the Switch's brightness option has helped most but not all of it.

Have seen the end credits with two of the three Slay the Spire (PS4 in case anybody didn't realise it's out!1!!) characters; got through it handily enough with a 'strength' build with the Ironclad and then doing it with the Silent nearly killed me but I got there in the end with a 'poison' build- after not being able to make block and shiv builds work.

I say all that like I know what I'm talking about, but despite spending 70 hours with it on PC, I really only have a superficial understanding of the synergies involved. It's a lot of fun trying to figure them out though.

Doing the defect now, which is crazy fun, no idea what is happening a lot of the time as all its moves are flashy and the screen is full of numbers. Also tried a couple of daily runs and didn't shame myself but didn't bother the leaderboards either (they only show the top 100). I play too conservatively (seek out health, avoid elites) for that.

Hm. I now have the overwhelming urge to turn on my PlayStation 4 and look for a game called Slay the Spire.

No idea where this is coming from. It's the strangest thing!
