Sound of Play: 198

Post by InsrtCoins »

This week, Sound of Play brings you a musical collage — a constellation of audio memories from the year 1996. Rediscover favourites from 1996 or encounter tunes for the first time. This mix contains excerpts from 130 of the year’s games.

We challenge you to test your knowledge of videogame music by trying to identify all of the games included within, and you can collaborate with members of our community by sharing your knowledge in this here forum thread. Soon, a video revealing the identity of each game included will be posted on the Cane and Rinse YouTube channel.

You can find this and every History of Videogame Music mix at clicking this link here.

Thanks for making this awesome music mix! I hope you'll consider doing 1993 and other years from the 1990s at some point. I can't wait to see the "answer key" :)

Yeah, 1996 was an odd year. Lot of SAX. Lot of ORCHESTRAL HIT.

Anyway, how’d I do?
Spoiler: show
Not well. Definites:

Persona 3
Street fighter alpha 2
Radical Dreamers (as resident Mitsuda fanboy, you know I won’t miss that one)
Parappa the Rapper
Pokemon Red/blue
Mario 64
Cruisin’ World (dreadful game)
Duke Nukem 3d.
Killer Instinct
Nights (into dreams)
Tomb Raider
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
Vandal Hearts (great piece, one I almost went with last time I was on the show)
Discworld 2

Possibles and half guesses:

Xmen vs Street fighter
Diablo
Front Mission 3 (96 feels too early for 3, but maybe it took a long time to be localised)
NBA Street
Wild Arms
Puzzle Fighter
Revolution X
Command and Conquer
Blade Runner

There’s also a Kirby and a Carmen San Diego game in there, but no idea which ones.

Solid list a couple of "right series, wrong entry" games in there, but overall -- you're hitting the nail on the head.

Sorry about the link. I'll fix it.

Games I'm pretty sure about:
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Donkey Kong Land 2
Donkey Kong Country 3
Super Mario RPG (I was waiting for this one)
Persona (must be the first one)
Mario Kart 64
Terrinigma (Less sure about this one, but I heard a track I'd swear was from Illusion of Gaia, which is too early, so it fits.)

And probably at least dozen others that I'm sure I recognize but can't place :)

Defintely a few there I should’ve got. Especially Die Hard trilogy and Twisted Metal 2 which I played a ridiculous amount of.

I knew there was a Sakuraba track there too, but for some reason I’d convinced myself the star ocean games were all a lot later than that.

After reviewing the soundtrack, I didn't really find any of the tracks in the Twisted Metal 2 soundtrack to be that memorable, so it probably doesn't immensely stick out.
