There's a great chunky feel to all the machines you make, and excellent animations. Really adds a lot. The space elevator being built was really cool.

We used to run a Minecraft server with Nuclearcraft on it and we all had separate roles to keep the server up running and safe.

The satisfaction from doing everything, for nothing, is brilliant.

It's actually quite simple and superficial (but looks great) at the moment. I 'manufactured' all that from just one starting iron and copper mine, very basic ingredients compared to let's say, Factorio, where if you wanted to drill for oil you even had to make the barrels to put it in first.

Edit: Ah, but you're talking about Nuclearcraft

That's the stuff! I never got into Minecraft because the lack of defined goals killed me. I didn't realise there might be mods/servers that provide that structure. I greatly enjoyed Gus Smedstad's posts on the RPS forum a few years ago, about his experiences with the Gregtech mod. They are very niche and are collected in the spoiler below if anyone wants to read them (I want to re-read them anyway).:

The meat of his experiences (in order - and it's a slow start) are here:
Spoiler: show

Sorry, can't be bothered formatting all these:

Just to remind me that Cuphead isn’t as cruel as I think it is, I spent a whole evening playing Manic Miner last night! At one point I got to the fifth screen, which is about as far as I’ve ever got, but even now there is very little I would change about it.

I also spent far longer than I expected to playing Atari 2600 Boxing! It’s not going to replace my current NES Classic Punch-Out! obsession any time soon, but it’s still surprisingly tactical and the pull of a rematch after a close fight is the same as when I played it endlessly at my best friend’s house in the early 80’s! I do now have my old 1970’s Interstate console close to hand if anyone’s interested in hearing about Tennis or Football on there next time?

Void Bastards seems promising from the hour or so I’ve put in. Not sure how long it’ll hold my attention though, looks like it might get a bit repetitive.

Outer Wilds has also dropped today, I already own that because it was gifted to everyone who watched the Xbox e3 presentation on mixer last year (it’s been delayed that much). Might go play that shortly cause the football already appears to be done...

I have been playing 3D Dot Game Heroes! Which is a lot of fun, doesn't take itself seriously at all, and I would highly recommend it.

I've been playing Mad Max. I'm fully aware that it's not a game I should like, because, as I see it, it's Busy Work: The Game, but it's clicking with where my head is at right now, just needing something so undemanding and almost chore like, like vacuuming or bleaching the tub. Not fun, but mindlessly satisfying.

After years of seeing it appear on lists of "The Best JRPG Games EVAAA" and seeing many people rave about it online, I finally decided to give Suikoden 2 a go.

I'm about 25 hours in and I'm completely in love with it. I don't really want to give too much away (yeah I know it's like 20 years old)but if you like JRPG's and you haven't gotten around to this game, do yourself a favour and pick it up- the story, world and characters are exceptional.

I'll add that so far I've been coasting through the combat, you really don't have to grind at all.

I actually just bought the first to games for the PS3. Looking forward to playing them soon. Did you play the first game or did you just skip to the sequel? I've heard there's not too much disconnect in doing so.

Yeah they're stand-alone stories but there are a few returning characters, references to the events of the first game and if you finish the first with (I think) all of the characters you can carry the save over and get an extra side quest.

I decided to skip the first one because I wasn't sure I could really commit the time for both games, it's the second game that everybody raves about and the balanced view from fans of the series seemed to be that it's worth playing the first if you have the time because it's a good game in it's own right but it wouldn't make a difference to your enjoyment of 2 if you skipped it.

I don't feel like I made the wrong decision, the game is great as it is and the references to events or people from the first game just add to the feeling that I'm in a real world with history to it, it's actually pretty cool. I'm a bit bummed about missing that extra side quest though and I plan to go back to the first at some point down the line.

Bunch of stuff on the go at the moment.

Void Bastards I sort of like, but I think it’s already getting a little repetitive for me. May not stick at it much longer.

Outer Wilds is really cool. I thought the whole Groundhog Day loop thing would make it frustrating but it really doesn’t. You very quickly start taking silly risks and doing daft things cause you know the penalty for death is basically nothing at all. As long as you find out *something* towards solving the mystery on each run, you’re good.

Also put a couple of hours into the Granblue Fantasy Versus beta. It feels a lot like a slightly toned down Persona 4 Arena. It’s a beautiful looking game, and even though I know nothing about the Granblue series it’s got enough to make me think I’ll probably pick it up.

How would you say they compare to the likes of FF5 and 6 and Chrono Trigger. The golden age of SNES era RPGs I mean really.

I've cleared off everything I had on my plate lately, so I'm in one of those odd patches where I don't know what to play, so I've been falling back on Forza yet again. This time with Forza Horizon 1. I've barely touched it since they stopped giving out in-game credits for this game, but these past few days I haven't been able to keep away. I've been doing a lot of the 1000 Club challenges. It's just a simple list of short objectives to do in each car in the game. It was the last thing they added to the game, and it sort of feels like it was intended just as a little bonus, throwing a bone to people who just wanted an excuse to keep playing the game forever. So in a way, playing through these feels strangely similar to how FH4 does many years later. Providing a similar kind of feeling, albeit in a much simpler format in this old incarnation. But it's been fun, and a nice bit of nostalgia, to go back to this game and have a reason to re-explore some of the content, and perhaps try out some cars I never used much.

And I've been dropping in to some online lobbies too. I was pretty surprised to find the servers are actually still populated, at least in certain modes at the right time of day. I tend to just do online freeroam, and it seems that's by far the most popular mode. Lobbies for other modes are pretty scarce, but for that they are pretty common. Pretty surprising for a game that's been delisted from online stores, and has been superseded multiple times now. Although I still expect that it would be impossible to find a rally mode lobby these days, making a certain achievement also impossible to get now. Unless there's someone on these forums who also owns this game, the Rally DLC, and would be up for spending some time cheesing for achievements...

Still don't have any idea what to move on to next. As seems usual for me, despite having had my eye on a bunch of games for a while, when a good time to pick them up comes around, I find myself not feeling the urge. Instead I yet again feel the pull to replay old games again. Right now the Bioshock games are looking pretty enticing in that GOG sale...

back around the time of its release, I made a post here about Dead Cells, basically asking for advice about whether or not I should give it a try. I liked the aesthetic a lot, but other rougelikes I've played (Risk of Rain and Enter the Gungeon) were not my cup of tea at all.

well, I finally played it for the first time last night, and about 3 hours flew by without me realizing it! just like the others, at first I was annoyed by having to always start from the beginning, but once I started coming to grips with the game's "language," realized that some upgrades are permanent, and (maybe most curcially) made the switch from slow, methodical progression to a faster style of play, the game really opened up and seemed to make more sense.

the fact that you're immediately dumped back into the fray after losing makes a HUGE difference in keeping things fun and addictive (by contrast, Enter the Gungeon made you navigate a few menus first, as I recall, which totally killed my sense of momentum and desire to try again). very pleasantly surprised with this game. looking forward to diving back in today.

ps- even tho I have been piecing together things gradually, I really do miss having an instruction manual to explain how the game works. how are manuals no longer a thing? are they really that antiquated?

I've been playing Gato Roboto on Switch. A microvania, if you will. Very compact in design with minimalist aesthetic but that doesn't stop it from being a great Metroid style adventure game. Only 6 quid on Switch.

I really want to get that, along with Hyper Light Drifter, on Switch. They both seem right up my street. Going to treat myself on Friday I think when I get paid, but can't decide which one to go for.

can't vouch for the performance on the Switch, but Hyper Light Driter is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite games. I highly recommend it.

I've heard HLD has some minor issues on Switch, but nothing that ruins the experience. The studio behind the port has been patching the game to improve it too. That version also has some exclusive content as well. And there's a physical version due out soonish as well. I played it on PC, and I highly recommend the game. One of my favourite indie games. Amazing atmosphere, and some great tight combat and fun exploration. I intend to pick up the physical Switch version when it comes out.

Lol weirdly I'm in a pretty good position to answer that because I literally finished Chrono Trigger the day before I started Suikoden 2 and I played FF5 for the first time earlier this year (I've been trying to go back to the JRPG classics I've missed and realising it's a lot of them).

It's probably worth saying first that I did like Chrono Trigger but I wasn't anywhere near as taken with it as most people are, I didn't really get into it that much until the last third of the game just a bit before the side-quests. I really did love that part though, it was so much better than anything in the main story and I appreciated the game a lot more because of it. It's actually really similar to Suikoden in how easy it is to progress through the game, they also both have dual/unite moves but in Suikoden you only get them for specific character match-ups, usually based on the characters having a relationship of some kind.

FF5 was all about the job system for me and I did like it a lot, enough to do the optional super bosses but the story was ehh.

I prefer Suikoden 2 to both of them though to be honest and I'd say FF6 is the only one that is even close to it out of those mentioned (haven't played it for ages though). I'm not tryna rustle any feathers saying that, it's just my preference. Chrono Trigger and FF5 both have quite standard Good vs Evil stories and that doesn't really do it for me; Suikoden 2 has a much more nuanced story and it throws a lot of surprises at you, that's just more my kind of thing I guess.

It is probably a bit unfair to compare it to those games though as it did come out in 1998 so after FF7
