Nice write up Scrustle. I've been on the fence about getting Judgement but I think I will. I restrict myself to 1 Yakuza a year to avoid burnout though so I'll pencil it in for 2021 (finishing Kiryu's saga with 6 in 2020).

The continuation of this little puzzle game series. It still predominately uses colored lasers and combining/splitting them as needed to get the right color to where its needed to open the door to the next room. What is new in this one are mirrors to reflect things around. It remains nothing fantastic but still makes for a neat, short, puzzle game.
Aug 21 - Shadows: Awakening (PC)
An ARPG with an interesting gimmick. You play as a demon and absorb various souls throughout the game that are other characters you can freely swap to. There is the main one you choose at the start and you have up to two of the others in your party at once. You only die if the demon dies or if all the other souls die. The demon is also in another realm that has enemies only he can see and the same goes for the souls. Each one is limited to three abilities at a time (each one has more to learn than that) but between four characters that you can use, that is a nice amount that you can combine as you see fit. It makes for a nice and different gimmick for the genre.
The game itself, though, is certainly slower than your normal ARPG. Combat is ultimately fine. There are puzzles that are mostly fine but there are some boulder rolling ones that suck because the movement doesn't work well with moving them around. Overall, it does its gimmick well but remains average in for the rest.

I'm doing pretty much the same. Played Zero and Kiwami in the last two years and currently halfway through Kiwami 2. I'm enjoying it a lot more than the first Kiwami. The side activities aren't as good as Zero though, darts and pool were great but I'm not so much of a fan of this darts game in Kiwami 2. Some rather questionable entertainment activities as well, photographing the women in swimwear etc!ColinAlonso wrote: ↑August 23rd, 2019, 10:19 pm Nice write up Scrustle. I can't help thinking I'd really enjoy Majong and the 'kind of like chess' game they have too if I could be bothered to learn them. Great game though. Really pleased 3, 4 and 5 coming to current gen. The collection should be fairly cheap by the time I need to buy it, too.

Night in the Woods
I loved this. It's a great "one of them". Although in this case it feels quite unique in that the character you play is

Depressingly, NitW coder and musician Alec Holowka has just today been accused of sexual assault (and many of us believe the accounts as given).
The writer and artist Scott Benson - or anybody else who worked on the game - haven’t received any such accusations, it should be stressed.

This really has affected my desire to play this. I only bought it the other day and was quite excited but I don’t think I’ll be playing it anytime soon:(ratsoalbion wrote: ↑August 27th, 2019, 5:30 pm Depressingly, NitW coder and musician Alec Holowka has just today been accused of sexual assault (and many of us believe the accounts as given).

Very sad times. Like any industry there are bad eggs but I wish they didn’t exist in the world of videogames or only made the crap games so I didn’t have to feel conflicted.

Equally grim is that Jeremy Soule has been accused of rape.
Incredibly brave of the victims to make their accounts public.

Re: Games Completed 2019
I can’t believe this has come out the day I finish the game. Although one thing here that makes me feel better about my connection to the game is I actually thought the music / sound design was the least successful element of the game for me. Very oddly for a game like this, I could easily have played it with the sound off I think (although I didn’t). Essentially erasing this guy’s creative input.
It’s not a situation as with watching the MJ documentaries or something, meaning I find it really difficult to listen to songs I used to enjoy now, unable to separate the art from the person.
Goddamit. I wanted to chat about Night in the Woods after experiencing it, not about some horrible abusive prick. This will clearly grab headlines, and tarnish the game for some which is a shame for the others involved in creating it. I think it’s a real triumph of the genre.
Clearly the most important thing issue here is the victim who has had the courage to speak about what happened which is tough - hopefully sparking a healing process / inspiration for others.

1st February - Dark Souls
8th February - The Gardens Between
9th February - Quarantine Circular
20th February - Night in the woods
26th March - Ape Out
16th June - Brothers
25th June - My Friend Pedro
7th July - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
23rd July - Streets of Rage 2
27th August - DOOM (1993)
One of those games that's been infamous throughout my life growing up yet I've never owned or played.
Beaten the first 3 episodes and I get the love for it entirely, even 25+ years on. Still smooth as hell, great fun to unleash that shotgun and the music is by and large great.
Didn't bother with the Ultimate / Final Doom 4th chapter as I hear it's just challenge maps and a later addition. Plus I felt the Episodes gradually got more convoluted and irritating anyhow.
Episode 1 was pure joy. 2 pretty damn decent. 3 felt like dying over and over looking for an obscure place to hide a switch or door.
But very glad I've played it. Great game.

That is bloody terrible. Randomly I have been Facebook friends with Jeremy Soule for a few years but he posted a couple of weeks ago he was taking some time away from social media. Just checked now and he may have deleted his account. All makes sense now!ratsoalbion wrote: ↑August 27th, 2019, 9:30 pm Equally grim is that Jeremy Soule has been accused of rape.

Yes a more elegant write up than I can manage Scrustle. I have Kiwami 2 ready to finish (I think I am midway through) and will wait for the 3, 4 and 5 to go on sale digitally which I imagine it will prior to 4's release. Judgement is now my second favourite in the series after Zero with Kiwani a distant last place.Alex79uk wrote: ↑August 26th, 2019, 8:55 amI'm doing pretty much the same. 23rd Aug - Superhot (Xbox One)
Both completed for the podcast (which we recorded over the weekend). Thoughts on there, obviously.
This was my first completion of Superhot VR. Other than the stripped-back story, I agree with those who've said that it is incredibly well suited to the format. Playing this was intuitive in a way that even overcame the difficulties I had with tracking and throwing.
A highly-recommended VR experience.

Super Mario Bros 3
Agree with Alex the final world was not fun at all. I had to resort to save states in the end which was a shame but I’m glad I’ve done it and that’s the original trilogy off my backlog. Im going to have a go at the lost levels but from what I heard I don’t think I will see the credits.

Re: Games Completed 2019

A hidden gem of an FPS so I gave it a try. I found it fine but that is about it. The two gun limit that I dislike is there. With ammo availability it became the usual, using the assault rifle for one and shotgun for the other. There are some other neat guns but with their limited ammo, I'd rather not run around with a useless gun.
The gem part of this game is its time powers. It's a time travel story and you get the ability to manipulate some things with it. You can age/de-age things for some light puzzling (and enemy killing) as well as some other powers that saw very little use. Enemies are mostly generic humans that aren't worth talking about. The others are mutants that can be fairly creepy. Both die to only a couple shots even on Hard difficulty and the protagonist can eat a surprising amount of shots so it was pretty easy.
Aug 26 - Typoman (PC)
Think Limbo but all the puzzles are putting words together with the available letters to make something happen to move forward. For example, you need a door to open so you spell "open." There are sometimes a few words you can use to solve the same puzzle and they work. Most of the time. There are times you can spell a word that should work for the situation but doesn't and that can be frustrating. That put me off from this game. At least it has a nice message overall.

Life Is Strange The Adventures of Captain Spirit and Season 2 Episode 1 Roads
Completed both back to back and blown away by them both. Very heavy going and a little bit too on the nose in places but I would say the latter is an improvement on season one. I had a holy sh*t moment when I figured out the link
