Enjoying reading through all of the lists in here (Shout out Dynasty Warriors 3) I might have to give it a go but I always end up with too many choices and find it really difficult to narrow down; it's always a bit painful putting these lists together and having to exclude things you love.
James wrote: July 24th, 2019, 11:21 pm Excellent list, Sinclair Gregstrum! A couple on there that sparked some pangs of regret as they only very narrowly missed my list. Speaking of which, I had another crack at my own list tonight and I have it down to 50.

Some heartbreaking decisions, and a lot of changes since my last list in 2016. As mentioned previously, I've tried to avoid choosing games from the same series in order to help with variety. Only The Legend Of Zelda and Hitman made it onto the list twice, both due to recent releases that I've absolutely adored.

Oh, I've put the games in order of release year. Though not necessarily the order I played them in, I felt this provided a sense of chronology.
Spoiler: show
Tetris (1989)
The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past (1991)
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)
Street Fighter II (1993)
SimCity 2000 (1994)
Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1996)
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (1997)
Championship Manager 97/98 (1997)

Rez (2001)
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002)
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003)
Half-Life 2 (2004)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (2005)
Okami (2006)
Shadow Of The Colossus (2006)
BioShock (2007)
Mass Effect (2007)
Burnout Paradise (2008)
Dear Esther (2008/2012)
Far Cry 2 (2008)

Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)
Demon's Souls (2009)
Plants Vs Zombies (2009)
Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Cuphead (2017)
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2017)
Hollow Knight (2017)
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild (2017)

Phew! :D
I'm surprised to see Silent Assassin in there over Blood Money but that's partly my own nostalgia talking.

Fear not, I like Blood Money pretty-much exactly as much as Silent Assassin. I know for many fans, Blood Money was where IO fulfilled the promise that the Hitman series had held up to that point. For me, almost everything the series would go on to do in Blood Money, and (arguably) the 2016/2018 reboots, was there in Silent Assassin. I know it's a rough experience now, but it's a game that truly blew me away at the time.

Totally get that and I guess that's what makes these lists fun. I know my own list would include some choices that'll seem crazy to everybody else.

- Celeste (Switch)

Like the breaking up of things into themed categories! Gives a bit of context!

Some interesting choices as well. Not sure what it says about you that you find Bioshock fun and comforting, but different strokes for different folks ;)

It's really a shame that we didn't get FF5 in the west, because it's really the beginning of the Final Fantasy golden age. FF4 is still kind of trapped in NES design conventions in a lot of ways, but FF5 is really the first in the series to perfect the formula. Yet, it's probably the least-played numbered entry aside from FF3 and MAYBE FF2.

Until Dawn was great, and I strongly recommend Man of Medan as well. It's not AS good, but it's definitely worth experiencing, especially if you can gather some friends and family and play co-op. It's 2 players online, or up to 5 local co-op. But even single player, it's quite good. It's been review-bombed for reasons I don't quite understand though.

Would be really interesting to grab all these top 50s and bang them into Access and generate a few reports and graphs. A fair bit of cleanup to do that though.

I just finished updating my Top 100 list, so here you go:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... TXQMn3v5w/

It's rather different, but I tried a new method this time, and I think I like it a little better. I think there's around 10 new games on the list vs. my old one.

I had a look at doing something this morning; I thought it'd be nice to have something where you could quickly see what the highest ranked games were, what the most common top-10 games were, etc, and maybe have something where you could plug in a forum member's name and get a nice report with closest matches against other members etc, as well as exceptions (hello, Beyond: Two Souls), patterns etc.

I thought I had Access on an old work laptop but it turned out I didn't. I downloaded a freeware DB called Kexi, and while it was quite interesting, I could see no way of setting criteria in individual query fields (eg summing totals on the fly, or selecting within ranges) so that was an issue. Still, I figured I could get some simple queries going upon which I could export to excel and graph etc. I was using Isopod's spreadsheet, randomised for him and two other users to test this.

Happy enough I could come up with something basic, I then turned to the data. Lots of unranked lists in here! And people spelling Pokemon with and without the accent! And Dark Souls 3 vs Dark Souls III! And so on and so on.

So I am not pursuing it further at this time

Hahaha, I've actually only ever played Bioshock once, so its definetely more on the bloody great fun side of things rahter than comfort game...maybe I should've split them up into seperate groups, but the tiers are still ranked from highest to lowest, so this felt like the closest I could approximate an overral ranking.

In terms of pure gameplay, I'd rank FFV as the best in the series. On top of that, its wrapped in an charmingly cheesy romp of a narrative that I can't help but adore. FFIX adds some gravitas to balance things out later which is why it wins out for me, but I still feel like the games are tonally kindred spirits. I don't think its an accident that Zidane and Bartz team up in Dissidia.

The results are in and there is some surprising news:

Image

The db thing I'm using has no aggregation functions, so I might post another graph as and when I get time.

Also, some caveats:
The data contains all lists in this thread; earlier lists that have since been superseded (in the form of an updated list) are not included. So one per person.
The thread goes back to 2013, so current gen might be a bit unrepresented overall. It's hard to believe those guys lived in a world where The Witcher 3 did not exist. :D
Ratsoalbion's list is from, I believe, 2004.
The two sets of participants (2013 vs 2018 forward) are suffering from two different sets of recency bias.

NB 34 people in total created lists.

One more - if we look at how 'popuar' a game was, ie how far it was towards the top of people's lists, we get this for our top games:

Image

NB this is skewed because some people didn't rank their lists (I just took them in the order they were presented). So Bioshock benefits from being near the top of Alphabetical lists, for example (also, Bayonetta, which was number 11, though it had a strong showing overall in any case). Similarly, Super Mario games would suffer slightly from being at the 'bottom' of these lists.

Most Eclectic - these are the folks who had the most unique games on their list - i.e. nobody else included these games:

Image

Interesting that Tleprie is in the lead there, as their list doesn't contain any really crazy stuff, it's just that the games are not present in others' lists.

Stvnorman on the other hand included the entire Spectrum back catalogue...

And on the flipside, these are the Most Mainstream lists, ie those who had the most games in common with other people, and the fewest unique entries:

Image

And please note that this is all just a bit of fun - no conclusions should be drawn from any of this, and I don't mean to put anyone on the spot!

That said, Josh is obviously the most mainstream ;)

Excellent stuff!

It would have been interesting to see the popularity index (graph #2) if everybody had ranked their list, though.
