The Guardian's Top 50 games of the century

It's a solid list.

How many have you played? Me, 42, which is more than I expected when I started counting!

Of the 21st Century? Last time I checked there were still over 80 years left!

Played 45 of those, and completed the majority, although I’ve still not played far into Dark Souls.

Only 28 for me!

Not a fan of the list actually. Solid bunch of games but a weird order for me, and some of the selections in multi-game series are odd. Picking the first Forza Horizon over 3 or 4? The original Guitar Hero?

Still, not my list! To each his own!

Red Dead 2 is far too low for me. Either top or second place, I say!

34 for me.

Not a huge fan of the list either, but these things are always subjective.

Played 26 of them, but 8 others I have played other entries in the series.

Not that impressed by the list either. It's fine, I suppose, but as a list of the "must play" games of the past 19 years, it doesn't feel like it's particularly inspired. While there are a decent number of games that are ones which actually offer a meaningful experience, others seem like they're just there because they are popular. Some seem rather redundant too. Do we really need GTA4 and 5?

On the Forza Horizon/Guitar Hero thing, I'm guessing the logic behind that is that unless there is one particular game in the series that stands out as especially relevant, they just picked the first to represent all of them.

I mean no Yakuza, the 3rd best Gears game and no Alien Isolation for a start but then someone picking a top 50 is hardly going to cover a huge range is it?. I feel like I want to take a college course on Breath Of The Wild as I just didn't get it

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I disagree. There aren't any bad games on there, but there are plenty I'd have chosen over the selected few.

I've played 21 of those games. I disagree with so much in it but who am I to say what should be in a list of the "best" video games of the century. As the Cane and Rinse guys say, "favourite" yes, "best" no!

The other thread has shown just how hard it is to make a top whatever list, it's fun to try though!

I’ve played all of them😮

Now the number I’ve completed is a different story!

The only major omissions to my taste are SF4 (which is a colossal omission as the game that completely revitalised the FGC) and Mario Galaxy (which is unforgivable and invalidates the entire list).

I think the idea was to only have one game per franchise and Odyssey is the one they chose. Then again, they don't seem terribly consistent with it considering the two GTAs...

Yeah, I appreciate that but nevertheless an odd choice. Odyssey is brilliant in parts but Galaxy is easily arguably the greatest 3D platform game ever made.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with that. I would have picked Galaxy too.

I must admit, I preferred Odyssey, but that's really totally down to the controls. It would be interesting to be able to play Galaxy with a standard pad to see how it compares.
