Most of my feelings about this game I've already talked about, and usually I'd just link to the post. But this time I feel like this post would be lacking context without including the previous one in full, so:
Finally picked up Lucah: Born of a Dream and so far it's proven to be a pretty compelling experience. It's got a really unique feel to it that I like a lot. It has a sort of uncomfortable and even alienating feel to it, in a way that is clearly intentional though. Like it's trying to create this hostile and abstract world, trying to get you to see things from the perspective of the character you play as. Even though it appears to be set in some approximation of a normal modern town, everything is rendered in dark, low res graphics that have scratchy, messy style to it that makes things hard to make out. I mean, you can usually tell what everything is supposed to be, but it all feels uncanny and even dangerous. And it's all mixed together with more supernatural elements that are clearly meant to be metaphorical symbols, but it's unclear exactly how much of it is supposed to be "real" in the world itself.

All of this seems to be in service of the story, which is definitely very intriguing and covers some really heavy topics, but does it in a pretty abstract way that can be somewhat obtuse and inscrutable at times. But again, that feels like it's meant to be the case as it's part of the themes it's trying to get across. It seems like what it's getting at is the experience of being trans growing up in a repressive religious community, as well as other mental issues that might coincide with that, or be adjacent to it. Like depression, and even suicide. While I can't speak to the trans experience myself, I try to listen to that perspective a lot, and have some of my own experience with other aspects of mental health, so it still resonances on some level. As such it makes sense for the aesthetic style meant to evoke feelings of hostility and darkness. Where there's this sense of creeping dread, and cryptic allusions to guilt eating away at you, or not feeling like your body is your own. Detached from yourself and everything around you.

Honestly it's very hard to put in to words. But that's part of why it's so interesting. And I haven't got far enough to see where this is all heading yet, but I'm definitely keen to find out.
All the way to the final credits the game kept on that tone, where it was more about raw feelings than a cohesive plot. Although there were a few little character moments here and there, it felt like they weren't really supposed to be part of a self-contained story. But I appreciated that. It's sometimes much more effective to communicate a message just by focusing on the emotional experience than presenting a logical sequence of events. It makes sense a lot with a game that is focused so much on the themes of mental experiences too. It's not about saving the world and feeling triumphant, it's about wrestling with your own thoughts in the scary and often nonsensical world inside your head.

That said, it appears that there is a more concrete plot under there to uncover, but one which you have to piece together yourself from fragments that appear in multiple playthroughs. Very Nier-inspired, and also fitting for the theme of trying to piece yourself together and make sense of your thoughts and feelings. Although honestly I'm not sure I'll go for all of that stuff. While I liked this game, it wasn't so much as to want to immediately go through it all again. And I've been replaying games quite a lot this year too. I feel like moving on to something else.

Also I realise I neglected to mention anything about the gameplay. I'm kind of torn on it. I like the idea of it I suppose, but it doesn't feel like it comes together as tightly as it could. It feels like it's trying to mix together Hyper Light Drifter with a bit of Dark Souls, with the emphasis on the former. So it kind of ends up feeling like a version of HLD where you're held back by a restrictive stamina bar. I didn't really care for that, and it always felt like I never had quite enough stamina to really play the game at the pace it felt it required. Also the enemy design is not the best, in a visual sense anyway. They're all abstract monsters (that often have some kind of religious symbolism involved) in that scratchy, low res style, so they're sometimes really hard to visually read. It's hard to tell when an attack is coming at times, or pick out projectiles against the background. And when a couple of enemies bunch up on top of each other, it becomes an incoherent mess. At least the sound design is good though. Full of sharp cracks that feel powerful, but also very unique to this game. The sound design in general is really good, with lots of eerie off-kilter music that helps sell the mood really well.

Completed in one hour!? And felt substantial!?

What a cool game this is. The whole '60 second life' thing is kind of a gimmick, but as the game is built around it, and it never got frustrating. Constant new things to discover, and try. Each puzzle was completed in just a few 'lives', so it moved along at such a fun pace.

Fantastic art style too. Seems a bit brash at first, but I pleasantly eased into, and appreciated, it.
I am interested.

What did you play on? It's currently £8.99 on Switch and £4.19 on Android. More tempted by the Android version because it wouldn't cost me anything with all the Google Play credit I have built up from surveys! Wondered how it might control on a touch screen though. I've seen mixed reports.

It's really well paced and just delightful all round, isn't it?

I have a spare Steam key if anyone wants it.

Finally! Ive owned it on Ps1, PSP and PS4 and never managed to get past the chicken cooking stage until I finally cracked it a few months ago but then got stuck on the final stage.

I put it on today after picking up the kids from school/nursery as my son pointed at the icon and asked what it was. We all (my 4 year old, 18 month old and I) danced around the room whilst I played the stage completely carefree and without expectation that I would finish it but I did. First time. Finally! That’s one more Nemesis off my backlog.

Boy oh boy, I'm not sure I'm up to describing this. The Long Dark works really well as a survival sandbox, so the story mode has some real obstacles to overcome while using the same mechanics and setting. For example, you encounter wolves in the sandbox, and you can choose to give them a wide berth (advisable), or pick off one from a distance if you have a ranged weapon, and so on. In the campaign, wolf encounters are scripted, so none of the above applies. You have to deal with them - and although you are given two guns and a flare pistol to help with this, it is extremely difficult to land a shot on several moving targets using a console pad. There are about a dozen scripted wolf encounters in this game, leading to the necessity of save scumming to get through them. I should mention that a wolf encounter often leads to death and a game over, or if you survive, you're often in a state where you're as well reloading a save. So pretty big stakes.

In fact, after about 5 hours of raging on PS4, I decided to move over to PC where I also own the game, and restart it with mouse and keyboard instead. What a blessed relief! Zero issues with shooting after that.

The entire episode is about 10 hours in length and was full of infuriating things, but for some reason I'm thinking about going back to console and finishing it there also (though I'm not sure I'll be able to scrounge enough bullets to finish it on console unless I save scum to the point where I can do 1 wolf = 1 bullet). So it has some weird appeal.
Finished it on console too.

As a background, I've played Phantasia, Symphonia, and Abyss. From that, I expected a plot with a villain who has a goal that would make the world a better but the way they go about it is terrible. This is not the case with Vesperia. It does have a villain that follows that but it only pops up almost at the end of the game. It is a side effect of how the story is set up. The game is set into three different acts that have very little to do with each other. It also means some character traits (most notably Yuri) just gets dropped. The entire thing is rather jarring.

The combat is still good though and the free roam doesn't break the combat like it did in Abyss. Enemy mystic artes are still rather annoying in that they are almost a guaranteed kill on those that get hit by it but they are fairly uncommon. They did learning passive skills via weapons this time around and I think they went a bit overboard on just how many there are. If you want to learn everything, you'll constantly be using a weaker weapon throughout the entire game. It does take many hours into the game before combat really starts to flow better with the skills and abilities you learn. Like the rest of the series, it still has the problem where if you want to 100% the game, you better have a guide next to you at all times.

Vesperia made for a fun game but it was a disappointment, especially when reading many put this at the top for the series. They really needed a single story thread instead of splitting it up like they did.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019

If I was rating it, I'd give it a 7/10 based on the campaign, closer to a 6 than an 8. It was fun while it lasted. Graphically it was outstanding. But it felt inferior to the original Call of Duty 4 which still holds up, the campaign was so short even I finished it less than a weekend, and I have very little desire to revisit it. I'd wait for a price drop on this one.

Got this on a rental to smash through in a couple of nights.

Spider-Man

A very good game with a very good (if a little predictable) story. It felt a little rushed in places
Spoiler: show
Doc Ock building up to the big bad was way too quick
however I have to say I enjoyed the new Peter Parker and MJ. No inclination to do all the side stuff but may give the DLC a shot at some point.

Alien Isolation: Last Survivor and Crew Expendable

Finished both bits of DLC on Nightmare difficulty. Both great nods to the original movie (the latter ends is based around a deleted scene from Alien), Al still as horrific as ever especially on this difficulty.

October - What Remains of Edith Finch (100%)

3rd November - Riverbond (Xbox One)(100%)
This games subtitle should be "my first ..."
It's a good looking voxel graphics isometric dungeon crawler. There is a story somewhere in the background but largely 1 - 4 players get dropped into an area and have to complete a task (interact with x object, kill all enemies, kill BIG enemy). There are 8 levels each split into a few area's and each with a visual theme (river, swamp, castle, etc) and there are chests that contain additional weapons, or coins, or skins.
And that's about it. Played this one with my daughters over the weekend and they got into it as their first game of this sort. It has a soft competitive element in that players are ranked on the points for a session but it's the combined total that gets remembered; it has a very basic bullet hell element particularly towards the later levels (all levels are accessible from the beginning) and I could see a first time speed runner trying this to work on progress from a quick run to a no damage, no death, starting weapons only challenge.
But I can't see myself coming back to this by choice now I've got all the way through it. Even from the achievements, I was only missing one conversation and one secret area after the first play-through, both of which I picked up. As a Game Pass game for a group who aren't deep into dungeon crawlers it works very well. Other than that, it almost seems to be a proof of concept for Minecraft Dungeons ...

4th November - Thomas Was Alone (Xbox One)
This is actually the second time I've completed this (first time was on PS3) but with it leaving Game Pass in a couple of weeks, I decided to go back to it. It shouldn't be possible to care about a tetragon but the rectangles who are the characters of this story are given life in the droll narration by Danny Wallace. putting a spark of humour and even pathos in what is essentially a platformer, helped by the little written snippets at the top of each level that hint towards the bigger narrative that the player doesn't really have any part in. Whether I had forgotten or whether Mike Bithell added them in later, but two whole levels of platforms appeared after the end that I remembered - I'm calling this a completion in that I've seen the credits roll but there are now levels to be completed.

I'm sorry to say that it hasn't aged as well as I would like - a couple of the sound effects are very jarring against the generally thematic soundtrack and I did not find the jump button to be as responsive as a platformer requires (though this game is much more forgiving of mistakes) - the restart is so quick that a number of deaths were me not realising that I had grazed a spike and the respawning character being moved into a hazard near a check point. And it also felt like one or two jumps should have been doable but weren't, or weren't always. So there is now, for me, a little bit of fighting the game which detracts from the atmosphere

Still a game of note but a little patina now against the game I remember from a few years back. And from what I saw of the extra levels, it looks like one of the characters has an ability that is probably going to be a little frustrating to get the hang of.

A neat puzzle game where you play as a boar. You need to dig and push blocks out of your way to reach gems and other hidden stuff. Doing things in the wrong order will often make a puzzle impossible but there is a rewind feature that mostly works. It will often jump back way too much from where you need so you'll still need to redo some stuff but at least not the entire room. Some puzzles are also a bit vague as to what you need to do with some things off-screen, but that doesn't happen too often. Even then, the vast majority of the puzzles here are optional to beat the game. There's even an achievement to beat the game with under 10% completion.

Oct 31 - Anodyne (Switch)

The best thing I can say about this is that is often goes on sale for dirt cheap. Otherwise, it is an extremely basic Zelda (the first one) clone. So simple that there's only one item aside from your sword (it's a broom, here). The dialogue feels like it was written by what a 12 year old thinks is edgy. A few random curses thrown about for no real reason; not to mention the story makes zero sense. Level design is also less complex than the first Zelda.

Spoiler: show
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Chrono Trigger
Wolfenstein: The New Order
DOOM (2016)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Super Mario 64
Metro: Last Light
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Shovel Knight
The Last of Us
Valkyria Chronicles
Mad Max
Suikoden
Hollow Knight
Dead Cells
The Messenger
Resident Evil 0
Luigi's Mansion
Finished Luigi's Mansion last night. It's lives up to its reputation and is a lot of fun. It wasn't a slog to get all 50 Boos or all the ghosts, the music was quirky and it still looks pretty after all these years. I have a feeling that final boss should be easier than I made it, but I can't help be bad at that sort of stuff. Not being a huge fan of 3D platformers, I found it to be a nice jump back into the Mario-verse.

BLACK BIRD

Normal Mode. Loved everything about this game, apart from the minor bullet-helly bit at the end. I tended to dip in once a day for a long time and see how far I would get. This time round I decided to practice the bullet-helly bit first and hopefully finish it; did that once with a life or two to spare and then played through.

Lovely aesethetic, enjoyable gameplay, never has murdering villagers felt so good. Still don't really know how scoring works but whatever, it's done now.

State of Decay 2: Heartland

The State of Decay games occupy their own little niche and I love them. This was a 9.99 DLC that I got on Gamepass for free, so it's paid for itself for 3 months. Really excellent bit of DLC - a full campaign where permadeath kicks in for your party members and derails the whole thing after 4 hours or so.

I really wish I never started this. It’s been the bane of my gaming life this year. I kept thinking it was going to get better and chipped away at it over the year before finishing it this week. Clearly it’s not for me as it is beloved by many. If I were to stand back and describe the premise to somebody it would sound fascinating. I just didn’t find it fun or rewarding to play. I’d love a trimmed down version but as it is I really didn’t like it.

7th November:
Driver:San Francisco

Loved it. Like burnout with a story.
Used my own custom soundtrack which made it all the more emphatic. Great stuff!

Nov 20th:
Grabbed by the Ghoulies

A nice distraction and one which my son got into watching me play. I’d feel aggrieved to have paid for it but its inclusion on Rare Replay probably helped make my opinion a little more positive.
