Eternal Sunshine of the Gaming Mind

Post by DomsBeard »

If you could have 3 games removed from your memory to play again for the first time what would they be and why?.

Mine's

1. Fallout 3
2. Super Mario 64
3. Metal Gear Solid

Great question.
Only one leaps to mind for me at this point, though: BioShock.

Dunno I don't think a lot of my favourite games of my youth wouldn't hold up well if I played them for the first time today

But let's forget that for a minute

Goldeneye 64
Half Life 2
Project Eden (ps2)

Yeah as Guy said, presuming that this is more reliving the memory rather than playing them today, mine would be...

Rez
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Soul Reaver

Yeah I mean playing them again at the time you first did. Seeing Leon's tweets recently I'd forgotten about stuff I'd probably hate if I played Shenmue 2 now for example.

Deus Ex
GTA vice city
The Walking Dead

The First two are on the list because I have played them so much that it would be good to see them fresh again.

As for the walking dead I would imagine that a second play though would not be a emotionally impactfull as the first so take that away!

My list:

1. Bioshock - the ability to rediscover that twist would be excellent!

2. Mass Effect 1 - my favourite of the series, being able to be reintroduced to that universe.

3. KOTOR - again, like Bioshock, would be great to rediscover the twist!

I would definitely go for Counter Strike from the very day 0.1 was released. Seeing it evolve over the years upto 1.6 was an amazing experience. Clan matches, practices and all sorts of Sesame Street Clan shenanigans.

My generations Modern Warfare, fo sho.

I would also go for Ocarina of time (my first Zelda) and GoldenEye 007 (64)

I'd go with Final Fantasy 7, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Resident Evil 4.

definitely 1-Bioshock- seeing rapture again for the first time would be awesome
2-Resident evil-get rid of my childhood view of the game and judge it "fairly"
3-MGS4-a little bit of the 2 above, seeing those great moments again and playing it for the first time without the 2008 hype i was at.

I honestly think that's it. There was just something about that game.

I'm gonna go with....

1. Metroid Prime
2. Tomb Raider
3. Final Fantasy 7

Numbers 1 and 2 in particular, I find it difficult to explain to people exactly how they made me feel the first time around. Isolated and vulnerable but at the same time brave and empowered. You're exploring these spaces where nobody's set foot for hundreds of years and you can sort of feel the weight of all the time that's passed, and all the things that might have happened there.

Endless Ocean and Dear Esther manage to do something similar to a limited degree, but neither have any real sense of danger and they miss the wee spark of confidence (almost arrogance) of a preternaturally capable lead character like Lara or Samus.

Great topic!
