Streets of Rage 4 is reviewing pretty positively so far (and in theory will be on gamepass tomorrow)

Typically insightful and enthusiastic stuff from our man John:

Got my Xbox Game Pass copy installed and really looking forward to getting stuck in!

Played through the first level and left it now for when Dez gets on tonight 😎.

So far, I’m very happy.

I didn't realise G-Loc was coming out! Do you know if it's the Mega Drive or the Master System one? Because they were actually quite different, and I always preferred the 8-bit version, personally.

EDIT: It's the arcade one, obviously! Might get that. Let me know if you do get it, Steve. I've read a couple of reviews that ranged from very positive to 'pretty decent if you like that sort of thing'.

I gotta say, as somebody who's not really into old-school 2D beat 'em ups, SoR4 sounds pretty enticing.

EDIT: Bought!

I bought it, played a couple of levels, good game but still think Sengoku 3 is well better for a quarter of the price.

I've been enjoying it more and more. I think every character is very viable and I like adapting to their different strengths. Love the varied locations and the look of the whole thing. Cracking little game.

What are you playing this on, btw? Switch with the Hori Split Pad Pro?

Both XB and Switch, handheld and with Pro Controller. I think it's a worthwhile purchase for handheld even it it's 'free' on GP. Plugged in my stick as well just for the hell of it, adds a little. I think it looks just as good on the TV as in handheld.

I've really been getting a lot of fun out of playing as Cherry.

She's fairly weak but due to her speed is a great combo player.

Cherry has a bunch of interesting things the others don’t, you worked out how to stun lock an enemy in the corner using head stomps yet? I also get far higher combo counts with her than I do with the others.

How does this compare to SoR 2? Obviously everyone loved that game, but unless you're someone who put a lot of effort in to learning it you did end up just button bashing and using all the continues. Is there more nuance to the fighting in 4? Does it feel cheap at all? Like moves you just can't avoid and stuff?

SoR4 isn't cheap at all, quite the opposite in fact.

In both senses, some might say...

I believe it's possible to beat Streets of Rage 2 without taking any damage - and certainly without losing a life, so that game is scrupulously fair (especially compared to, say, Final Fight).

My hunch is that the developers will have been careful to make a no death (or possibly even no damage) clear on SoR4 entirely do-able.

And also, I know you were probably joking Leon, but I would argue that SoR4 represents fantastic value for money given the length of the main mode compared to other games in the genre, the cool unlockables and general replayability. No complaints here. Even the trophy list is dope.
