Micro Machines - Challenge Mode - Megadrive

An unplanned 1CC of Micro Machines last night, on a livestream!
It was loads of fun. I had planned to stream for 2 hours, and to do all the Micro Machines games on the Megadrive but this one took longer than I planned!

Spoiler: show
Jan 31-Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
April 13: Yakuza Kiwami
April 30: Locoroco 2
June 21: Batman: Arkham Knight
September 12: A Boy and His Blob
November 14: Wandersong
December 19: Sonic 4: Episode 1
December 22: Sonic 4: Episode 2

Since I tried the first episode, I figured I would go for the second one as well. I am glad I did. This is a MASSIVE improvement on the mediocre first episode. Bottomless pits are both less frequent and signposted far better. Levels are the classic Sonic mix of slow platforming and speeding along. Each level has a lot more variety between acts which makes up for it just been 4 worlds and a final boss. Tails is actually useful this time as he helps you barrel through enemies and help you reach higher areas. And bosses are mostly original and challenging this time, Metal Sonic was pretty fun to fight.

Even the music is somewhat competent this time being vaguely catchy. Still cannot hold a candle to the Mega Drive stuff but I don’t outright despise it which is more than I can say for Episode 1. If Sega had put as much care into Sonic 4 overall as Mario, Rayman and Donkey Kong got in their 2D comebacks around the same time and dropped the episodic gimmick altogether (2D platformers really do not need to be episodic, not exactly a genre known for their compelling narratives are they?) then this really could have been a good if not great title. Especially if the baseline quality level was Episode 2 standards. Far from my favourite Sonic title but this is such an absurd improvement on Episode 1 that I do recommend it to fans of the little blue mammal.

Yeah we tried Sonic 4 recently too, as the kids have been working their way through all of the Sonic games available on PS Now. Personally, I don't even really like the 'classic' games, so I'm even less fond of everything that's come since, but they seemed to enjoy this for an hour or so. The one they played most of though was Sonic CD. They tried the 3D games too, but couldn't get on with them. I think they've been spoiled with Mario Odyssey really!

This is my third year posting a list on this thread, and although I know it's self-indulgent to expect anyone to care what I think of these games, I've ranked them based on how much I enjoyed them, not that any one of them has been unenjoyable. The nice thing about being a part of this community is that the games that get recommended across the various podcasts and forums all hold merit, even if they weren't to my taste.

When I look back on my year of gaming I feel a little prideful over what I finished. I've played along with the podcast more than ever before, and that's been a unique sort of thrill, discovering a new series (PAPER MARIO, Whew! Talk about fun), sometimes getting a blurb read on the show (always exciting), and receiving the pleasant balm of thoughtful conversation across the C and R platform (There have been a lot of days this year where I've found the C and R community the most nuanced group of communicators in my life).

Like many people I'm hoping 2021 is a better year than 2020, but if my year in gaming can be as grand as this one was, I'll stay a happy man. Good luck in season ten Cane and Rinse. Be well everyone and keep gaming.

Breath of the Wild - Still the one
The Tetris Effect - Ascension through removal
Nier Automata - Don't Stop Ending
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door - Flat out impressive
Jedi Fallen Order - Greezy money baby
Assassin’s Creed Origins - Siwan Power Couple
What the Golf - Golf isn't boring
Symphony of the Night - Nocturnal Pleasure Palace
Astro's Playroom - My First Platinum
Fire Emblem and the Blazing Blade: Three Promising Protagonists
Golf Story - Hit it hard!
Paper Mario - Sheet impressed me
Ghost of Tsushima - Honorable Console Farewell
Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Great Artists Steal
Fire Emblem Sacred Stones - Regal Sibling Tacticians
Pikman Three Deluxe - Spiced Up Showcase
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Anything but expected
Tetris 99 - One more try
Super Mario Sunshine: Mario 3D All-Stars: - Wet and Wild
Mario 64 Mario 3D All-Stars - Overall Clever Classic
Bug Fables - Paper Mario Homage
Return of the Obra Dinn - Nifty Nautical Notetaker
Dead Cells - Homicide, regicide, suicide?
Control - Weird interview process
Mario Brothers U Deluxe - Suffers from style
Mother 3 - Ideas were there
New Super Mario Bros. 2 - Fun Cash Grab
Advance Wars Two: Black Hole Rising - Satisfying Strategic Sequel
Advance Wars - Plucky polygonal platoons
Tetris DS - Dropped Some Knowledge
Spider-man - Simulated City Swinger
Bloodstained Curse of the Moon - Swap to slay
Oxenfree - Stay tuned kids
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night - Fun Gothic Fanservice
Metroid Zero Mission - Lose the pirates
Journey - I Missed Something
Axiom Verge - It sounded awesome

Probably my last completion of the year, this was a puzzle platformer with a certain charm to it. Silly humour that whilst not laugh out loud funny, kept me smiling through its short playtime of a couple of hours. I appreciated the length as I think I'd have got bored with it if it had gone on much longer, but worth the 89p I paid on Switch.

An interesting game. Based on the developers personal struggle with anxiety, each of the levels deals with a different psychological aspect of mental health. It doesn't take long to play and I'd suggest that it's worth taking a look.

26th Dec - Unravel - Xbox One

This game is gorgeous. A lovely platform puzzler where you play as a creature of yarn. The levels are a mix of some very cleverly thought out levels and a couple of instances where it got a little fiddly. But it was very well paced and didn't overstay it's welcome.

25/12 - Frog Detective: The Haunted Island
28/12 - Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

I did enjoy this in the end, but by the closing hours it did begin to drag somewhat. The combat in general is okay, but nothing special. My problems with each weapon type having a very narrow moveset was somewhat alleviated over time, as later weapons actually get more and longer combo strings. But the mechanics never really get deep. It still maintains a very samey feel throughout. It's not bad per se, just not amazing. The camera is pretty poor though. There is a lock-on system, but it's fond of swinging around wildly at the worst times, and can get caught up in corners too. The system of levelling up and evolving your familiars is pretty good though, but strangely it seems a lot of their abilities only unlock at very high levels, all very close to each other.

The problem with repetitious environments gets pretty bad as the game gets near the end as well. The last level in particular gets pretty ridiculous with it. And in terms of their atmosphere, it seems the better parts of the soundtrack are all in the early levels too. The way the game world is structured is rather odd, with each large level strung together end-to-end. But once you go through all of them, you're nowhere near finishing the game. Yet you just stop having any clear way forward. I realised this is where I quit originally, being confused as to where to go next, and then stumbling on an extremely hard optional boss. While I found the proper way to progress this time, I've still never managed to beat that boss. Levels are connected in multiple ways however, except there's not really any reason to use these shortcuts when you find them.

I can't help but compare this to my time with Lament of Innocence. I suppose this one has many selling points over it. More variety in weapon types, the extensive familiar system, more visual themes for levels, despite the reuse of assets. And even though connections between levels are a bit pointless, at least they exist, rather than the compartmentalised layout of LoI. But I still feel a pull towards preferring LoI. I suppose at this point it's mostly rose-tinted memories, and a fresher experience might lead me to think differently. But still, I think LoI had a better atmosphere to it, and a better soundtrack.

I do like Curse of Darkness overall though. The specific way this series does moody Gothic camp is fun, and the dialogue is surprisingly well delivered. And even though as a game there's a lot you can pick apart about it, it's still entertaining. It's good when you want something that isn't too taxing. Good podcast game.

Sonic 4 could be alright as an introduction to the series ironically enough as it is for the most part, pretty basic as its level design is less complex than S3&K and Mania and the homing attack makes things easier in regards to getting around. Sonic CD is a very strange game that is definitely not representative of the 2D games as a whole so interesting that is the one that has got the most attention from them! Sonic does eventually get better in 3D for me personally (Daylight sections in Unleashed and Generations are pretty refined experiences) but the Adventure games have really aged poorly. Mario 64, never mind Odyssey, plays so much smoother than them its unreal! Never played Odyssey but one I really want to check out in the future. Have heard enough good things that, yeah, can see why other 3D platformers could struggle to impress in comparison for the little ones!

26th Dec - Unravel - Xbox One

Thanks for your review about Unravel, actually I have read very conflicting opinions about it. Could you please provide some additional details? Many thanks in advance
Don't recognise the link you posted (and would be wary of clicking a link on a public forum in any case) but a few more thoughts on Unravel.

The game really is beautiful to look at - edges were a little rough but it feels more like that's an issue of the screen I was using than the game. The audio was a good fit and grounded the game in the Nordic feel. Subject matter could be a little on the nose for sure, and I think that anyone who has undergone a recent, or heartbreaking, bereavement could be more affected by the game. The ending was just a little twee also honestly and there are certainly a couple of puzzles that were irritating. This was more towards the puzzles that had a timed element (particularly if you needed to make particular moves) but overall I'm left thinking this was an interesting game (and my elder daughter who watched me play most of it was as involved).
Certainly interested to try out the sequel

That enough? We can always make a separate forum post if you want to dive into this game in more depth - I don't have much more to say on it but happy to respond if you would like to talk more in depth on it (and I'm sure others here have their thoughts on it also)

27-12 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch)

Haven't had much time for playing games outside of streams (and even those I've had to cancel a lot), but I got a bit of time in over last weekend and finally managed to see the end of this one, which was my Christmas 2019 gift. 20 hours on the clock, spread out over 365 days!

Had a lot of fun with it whenever I played it though. Real comfy top-down Zelda-ing and that art style is too cute and cozy, despite the performance issues.

Bit conflicted on this one. It’s a really pretty puzzle game with some pretty good brain teasers in it and an interesting plot. If you liked Fireproofs ‘The Room’ series on mobile then this touches on the same sort of vibe (though isn’t the same kind of puzzle game)

But on the other hand it has an automatic note taking notebook in it which means all you need to do for most puzzles is look at everything and then go into the notebook to see what’s actually important. I guess you could try to play it without doing that, but it seems like it doesn’t let you even try to attempt certain puzzles if you’ve not got all the bits you need for the solution into the notebook. It’s too hand-holdy for my tastes.

Dec 27 - Monster World IV (Sega Mega Drive Mini)

A fun 2D action platformer. It dialed back the RPG elements slightly from the previous game. There is only one type of weapon compared to the previous sword/spear choice and there is no magic. The sword, shield and armour can be upgraded in shops.

The game looks great, with some wonderful sprite work, especially on Asha, the heroine. I think the hitboxes are quite generous to the player to allow for sprite movement that is more stylish than functional while still being fun to play.

The big gameplay addition to this game is Asha's Pepelogoo partner. A cute round flying pet who can be called with the A button and, when held, allows Asha to glide or double jump (the double jump is very reminiscent of Klonoa's method). It can also press far away switches and a number of other clever things over the course of the game. I liked it a lot.

Rather than the mostly connected 2D world of Wonder Boy in Monster World, Monster World IV has a hub town and distinct levels. Unfortunately, this meant the game felt less like a big adventure.

Overall, quite enjoyable and I will continue with Wonder Boy and Wonder Boy related games in future.

Dec 30 - Murder by Numbers (Switch)

Picross with a detective visual novel dressing.

The visual novel element is solid with likeable and charming characters but it never reaches the heights of a Phoenix Wright. There's no real gameplay here and any time I got a choice wrong it just gave extra dialogue and the choice again.

I'm not experienced in Picross but this kept it simple. There are no special rules and, apart from the final 20x15 grid, kept it to 15x15 grids at most.

It's well made and I liked it but I would only recommend it to someone who was interested by the basic description I gave at the start.

And that wraps up my 2020 games.

Predictably I did end up giving Vergil another run. I went a bit more slowly through this time though. Again this game really shines when you go through a second time with a better familiarity with it. That's even true when this is my seventh time in total, and when I was able to buy every single upgrade for Vergil right at the beginning of the first run. Vergil is still a blast to play, and I managed to start getting the timing for chained perfect Judgement Cuts down too, among a few other tricks. And I also finally unlocked his alternate colour costume as well. I've always failed miserably at that post-credits bonus fight that unlocks it, and I was considering not even attempting it this time. But thanks to Vergil's supermoves, I managed to fluke it this time.

I expect that's the last of this year's games then. The only other thing I have on the go right now is a long RPG that I'm not sure I'll even finish at all. This year was kind of weird for me. Over recent years I have noticed I've been trending towards playing older games over new releases, whether they be something I've played before or not. This year was the most extreme in that regard so far. I only played one game released this year, unless you count remasters or the Switch version of DMC3. Other than that it's almost all stuff I've played before, or older/lower profile stuff I managed to pick up for cheap or free. Haven't really had the money for the big new releases this year. It's a little alienating to be out of the loop on certain things, but it's also fun to revisit stuff I haven't thought about in ages to see how it holds up. And I found a couple of really excellent indie games that are now among my favourites too. OneShot and Night in the Woods still stand out as great experiences I would suggest people check out. I had a lot of fun finally cracking DMC3 as well and digging in to that. The Legacy of Kain games too were a highlight. Something I was meaning to get around to for ages and I'm very glad I did. It's bittersweet to an extent though, with how the series ended up, but that almost gave them an air of mystique to them as well. I suppose I can't forget the one genuine 2020 release I played in Doom Eternal. A fantastic game that was a great follow-up to Doom 2016, although it was a bit inelegant in some areas. But still so good that it puts pretty much all other shooters out there to shame.

(A slight edit since I realised No Straight Roads actually came out this year too. Time seems to have lost all meaning this year. Anyway, that was an interesting game, and I liked a lot of things about it, but it was also very flawed to the point I don't think I can say it was truly a high point of my year gaming.)

Hmmm... thinking of games I finished this year, the most notable for me would be the Infinity trilogy (the games Uchikoshi worked on before Zero Escape), Never 7, Ever 17 and Remember 11. It was an interesting experience, seeing where he started to some degree and how he used previous ideas into his later games such as the aforementioned Zero Escape trilogy and AI: The Somnium Files., Never 7 was just dull as dirt, Ever 17 had some interesting parallels to Virtue's Last Reward and Remember 11 was probably the best but had some... interesting story issues I can't discuss without spoilers Another one I got to finish this month was Telltale's Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures, which came as a surprise to me since they put it back on store shelves out of nowhere this month along with their Strong Bad game and Texas Hold'em, it was basically a pretty enjoyable W&G experience. The game that's taken the most of my time would be Genshin Impact, though I'm not sure if I can call that completed yet. I also got to play Psychonauts for the first time, it was very enjoyable, but man did collecting every Figment suck, but otherwise the characters, humor and gameplay have me eagerly awaiting its sequel. Paradise Killer was an interesting title that came out this year, a neat way to have a detective story, but I can't say the actual coming together and solving of the mystery was all that interesting, but overall very good. The Last of Us Part II was about what I expected, same quality story wise as the first game, but kind of bloated in terms of gameplay in some areas, which I'd have just preferred have been reduced. 13 Sentinels: Aegis RIm is probably my favorite game of the year, but the less you know going in, the better. That's about all I can think of for games I completed, but I might be forgetting something since I don't generally keep track.
