The C&R MAME Tournament - ROUND 3 (Finished)

1942

This weeks game, chosen by mikeleddy83, is the arcade classic 1942. The scrolling shooter which kicked off Capcom's legendary 19xx series is set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2. Your mission is to reign hell upon the entire Japanese fleet, using a variety of power-ups and some nifty bullet dodging.
Wikipedia wrote:1942 is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up made by Capcom that was released for the arcade in 1984. It was the first game in the 19XX series. It was followed by 1943: The Battle of Midway.

1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane dubbed the "Super Ace" (but its appearance is clearly that of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning). The player has to shoot down enemy planes; to avoid enemy fire, the player can perform a roll or "loop-the-loop". During the game the player may collect a series of power-ups, one of them allowing the plane to be escorted by two other smaller fighters in a Tip Tow formation. There were few enemies: Kawasaki Ki-61, Mitsubishi A6M Zero and Kawasaki Ki-48. The Boss of the plane: Ayako is: Nakajima G8N.

The game was later ported to the NES (developed by Micronics), MSX, NEC PC-8801, Windows Mobile Professional, and Game Boy Color. It was ported by the European games publisher Elite Systems to the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. The game was included as part of Capcom Classics Collection for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in 2005. The arcade version has been released on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on December 21, 2010, the PAL region on January 21, 2011 and in North America on January 24, 2011.

INSTRUCTIONS

First, you need to download the game from here : http://upload.drarok.com/files/download/21234/1942.zip

Copy the zip file in to the roms directory in your MAME folder, fire up MAME, remember to 'Audit all games' (File>Audit all games) and you're good to go!

Default keys appear to be arrow keys to move, CTRL to fire and ALT to do a barrel roll (which renders you invincible to enemy fire for a couple of seconds), but feel free to redefine keys as you like. As always, 5 is used to insert coin, and 1 to start a game.

You have an absolutely unforgiving 2 lives on one credit, and the highest score on one credit wins! I imagine you can earn extra lives through scoring points, but I didn't manage to on my test run. Remember to hit F12 on the game over screen to grab a screenshot of your high score (stored in the 'snaps' directory of your MAME folder) and upload it here for all to see.

Deadline is 8pm next Saturday. Highest score wins. Go go go!

I do believe that is the visual representation of "Shit, I've got no chance, do I?"

Seven games in this series in total. 1943 Kai is probably the best one though.

I remember having a fantastic conversion of this on my Amstrad. It was part of maybe the best multi-game tape I ever owned. It was this, Commando, Boulderdash and Nexus. I have such vivid memories of playing it whilst listening to Now That's What I Call Music 17, which I bought on cassette at the same time. Good times!

Right, here we go:

Returning to this I remember that my old high score was probably north of 400K. This was my first proper go for years and I didn't lose a life until about the fifth stage or so, then they started tumbling :)

Edit: Also I was using a 360 controller's crappy D-pad and not my preferred Namco arcade stick. Excuses, excuses ;)

I'm going to have to dig a gamepad out for this haha. Actually, might use my SSFIV stick thinking about it.

Just a little heads-up: The sequel to this (1943) came out for XBLA/PSN this week as part of the Capcom Arcade Cabinet doohickey.
400 MSP (£3.40) for three games, with the other two being Avengers (not those Avengers. Or those Avengers) and Black Tiger.
