At 510 hours and getting my final fish – which completes everything you can complete in the game – I’m calling Animal Crossing, but I’m still playing! Not sure where the rest of the month went – I was at least supposed to finish Residemt Evil 4 on GameCube, but it will be a nice start to 2021!

Alright! Death Stranding is all done and my last game completed of 2020. It was a weird ride, but I was all in. I even enjoyed the back and forth delivery of it all (which, is just solo World of Warcraft). Honestly, with all the road building and structures, it felt more like a building sim than the walking sim that it gets compared to. But, I mean, I was most definitely playing this for the story, which was weird, head scratching, melodramatic and totally my jam. It's not the action packed Bond-like blockbuster of the Metal Gear Solid games, but I was still hooked. I like that game is really about relationships and human connections, as well as bizarro pod-babies.

December:

At my wife’s request I have been blitzing my VR collection so I can pack the headset away. It’s nice to dip into Tetris effect from time to time but it takes up so much space and the wires under the tv are doing their best HR Giger impression.

The Inpatient (PSVR) - genuinely terrible aside from the ending and a few jump scares. Really disappointing.

Deracine (PSVR) - extremely touching game reminiscent of PS2-era Japanese curios. I shed a few tears at the end and would thoroughly recommend it.

Moss (PSVR) - I didn’t help myself by playing Astrobot around the same time as this is inferior in my opinion in almost every department.

Doom VFR - I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was a proper game as opposed to a tech demo. It made excellent use of the PSVR aim controller. I turned off all the comfort settings and zipped around the battle arenas with ease. The game is designed to accommodate those who are playing with the slower controls so I found the game incredibly easy.

Psychonauts vr - disappointing. A tech demo really and I didn’t enjoy the way it controlled. Still it was short.

Superhot VR - finally finished it. One day the move controls are perfect and the next they fly out of my hands and make the game impossible. Today was a good day and it is a good game.

Paperbeast VR - Like deracine this was a moving experience and really something which has to be seen to be believed. I had a few tears at one point but not because it was sad but the sensory overload alone was moving.

Mad Max - the quintessential 7/10 game. Everything about it was good without being great.

Tetris effect VR - managed to negotiate the journey mode. Crazy to think I was stuck at metamorphosis for so long but it seems easy now. Beautiful game.

Fisherman’s tale VR - I knew this game had won a few awards and I actually own it on Oculus Quest but I find that headset uncomfortable to wear for prolonged periods. I was a bit disappointed in the end. There were some good ideas but the implementation was lacking and didn’t really expand upon the concepts much.

Ghost Giant VR - a short, nice experience.

Trover saves the universe PSVR - for an hour I was laughing out loud and some of the 4th wall breaking gags were brilliant. Unfortunately the game descends into puerile jokes and every other word was an expletive so it wore thin. I think 15 years ago I would have loved this but right now I wish they had continued their mockery of videogames which they touched on at the beginning. The trophies are fun and silly too.

Boy and his blob vita - chipped away at this over the year and finally finished it and saw the true ending. Overall pleasant without setting my world alight.

Super Mario world - I’m not going to say too much. I’m glad I have finished it but I didn’t really enjoy it.

Far point VR - everything about this game screams high budget. The PS VR aim controller is so well implemented in this game and is truly 1:1. I liked the story and found some parts quite interesting and surprising.

Rhythm heaven mega mix - the perfect rhythm heaven game! I would love to see a new one on the switch.

Arizona Sunshine - Compared to farpoint and Doom this seemed dated and I felt unfinished. I had always thought this was a marquee VR title but the PS4 version at least was pretty terrible compared to many of the other VR games I played.

Started with a banger, it truly lived up to expectations. Even more beautiful in motion, stunning soundtrack which is one of my all time favourites now and fun puzzle platforming. Can't fault it in any way. 10/10

April - Fallout 1 (PC)
April - Telltale's Game of Thrones (PC)
May - The Darkness II (PS3)
June - Orcs Must Die! 2 (PC)
July - Dead Space 3 (PS3)
September - LA Noire: Complete Edition (PS3)
November - Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator (PC)
December - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)

December - Warhammer: Vermintide 2 (PC)

Posting in the 2020 thread as this dates from a few weeks ago. Not only do I have a huge backlog of games to play, but I'm now developing a backlog of 'games completed' write ups. Sigh...you gotta love modern life.

This is another one of those games where the definition of ‘completed’ is open to interpretation, but I feel like I’ve extracted my fill from the game, at least for now. Three mates and I played this for 80-odd hours, completing the main campaign and DLC missions up to champion difficulty. We did have a couple of attempts at legend difficulty, but were met with a very quick and messy demise on each occasion. Whether that’s down to our skill levels or the fact we needed to do a lot more grinding to improve our gear I’m unsure, but we decided to end that masochistic venture regardless.

Quite simply, this is up there with the best co-op gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I grew up playing the 4th and 5th editions of the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop wargame, so I was always going to lap up the setting and lore, but underneath the window dressing is some seriously immersive, tense and visceral gameplay. I hold Left 4 Dead – played with the same group of pals – in the highest regard, and for me, Vermintide 2 sits comfortably alongside it in the pantheon.

Some minor gripes I had include the difficulty balance. Even with low-level characters and gear, we found that the first two difficulty levels offered little in the way of serious challenge, while the step up to champion was more like a giant leap. Some grinding and crafting (we spent a long time butting our heads against the 'Skittergate' mission) got us to a sweet spot where our enjoyment of the game was at its peak, and we managed to remain there for a while. Even then, though, we very rarely had the sort of dramatic denouement you often get in Left 4 Dead, where one or more party members fall in the final, frantic moments of a mission. Instead, we'd either all get wiped out and need to restart, or all make it to the exit without being confronted by the dilemma of whether to turn back and risk one of our lives for that of a team-mate at the bottom of a large scrum of angry rat men. A harsh criticism perhaps, but another reminder of the sheer brilliance of Left 4 Dead's AI director.

Ahem, I'll try to stop mentioning that other game in what is meant to be a write up of Vermintide 2.

While I'm struggling to recall the finer details of the loot and character progression systems in the first Vermintide, the sequel evidently has significantly more depth and variety in this respect. In addition, the five main characters are far more than reskins (one area where Vermintide 2 holds a distinct advantage over the game that can no longer be mentioned), with their own unique skills, abilities and weapons. And if that's not enough, in the base game each character has three 'careers' which can dramatically alter their strengths and playing styles, adding another layer of variety. For example, the starting career for the character that I played, Bardin the Dwarf, is an Ironbreaker - essentially a walking suit of armour, slow in attack but able to soak up tons of punishment. But when you reach level 7 (around 10 hours of gameplay for me) you have the option to switch to the inverse-in-style slayer, a shirtless, redheaded tsunami of destruction with very little sense of self-preservation. This ability to customise and switch things up really enhanced the game's longevity, and was a key factor in us logging roughly three times the number of hours in Vermintide 2 compared with its predeccesor.

The graphics, the level design, the combat mechanics, the sound - all top notch in my view, and combined to create a gritty and foreboding sense of atmosphere. Missions averaged 30-45 minutes of gameplay, and from start to finish there are few moments to relax and draw breath. The melee combat has a real heft and solidity to it, seeming realistic enough to immerse, while retaining a simplicity that made it very satisfying to carve through hordes of enemies.

I've heard criticisms of the online matchmaking, although being fortunate enough to have three mates to play through the game with, this isn't something that affected me. For those in a similar position, and especially if you have any interest in the classic Warhammer Fantasy setting, I would highly recommend this game.

For no particular reason I ended up playing a lot of this in the final weeks of 2020, beating all the various modes a few times. This is not a good football game. Not at all. It is clunky, unresponsive, and unfair. Scoring goals is often pot luck. Tackling and defending in general is also often pot luck. Again, this is not a good football game!

However...

I can't stop myself from having a really good time! Firstly it looks every inch a Sega arcade game with big, chunky, bright graphics and smooth animations that still look rather nice today, especially when played through the Dreamcast's VGA mode. There's also just something immensely satisfying in how it feels to play, in spite of the aforementioned issues. There is a weight to the players that just feels great (to me at least!), and the ball physics have a bounce and momentum that again just feel right. Yes it's hard to score at times, but that means it is really quite joyous when you actually do!

If you're a fan of football games, do not bother trying this. It's shit. If you're a fan of late 90's Sega arcade games and up for a big dumb kick-about, you might find yourself oddly satisfied with Virtua Striker 2!
