I'm vouching for this show!Angry_Kurt wrote: ↑December 4th, 2020, 11:32 am I've just started a new podcast which I'm really excited about, if you're familiar with the podcast Star Calls, the premise is the same except for the Marvel cinematic universe films. I am the Marvel novice and will be working my through the franchise in release order, with each episode focusing on my thoughts and discussing them with the co-host who is the Marvel expert. Below are the links to the Twitter profile and podcast links.

I've just finished a Tarantino re-watch and was looking for another 'big series'. I've only seen a couple of the Marvel movies before, despite being a huge comic fan, so thought I'd watch the entire MCU movie series. I've watched up to the first Avengers movie so far, and it's been great. I remembered Kurt's podcast and have listened to the first couple of episodes, and really enjoyed them. My only issue now is whether I watch along with the show, waiting a couple of weeks between each movie, or carry on binging them like I have been.
Dammit Kurt, can't you just record an episode every night? Stop being so selfish
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Haha, thank you so much for the comments Alex. I'm watching Thor this weekend.

Ah, a place for shameless self promotion? Excellent. Let me sing you the song of my people...
I’m part of the 6 man collective that makes up Modern Escapism.
Our podcast is a sanctuary from the modern world. It’s an unashamed celebration of procrastination and the things we do to waste time.
Each week 4 of the six of us take part, we rotate hosting duties and we choose a subject close to our hearts. This week’s episode was about songs & music that defined our youth, next weeks will be about films. We cover TV, games, books, we’re all things to everyone.
Come and have a listen. We’re lovely, I promise

Hitman 3 uses gameplay and design elements I already knew well to tell a surprisingly compelling story. I wrote about my impressions of how IO cleverly did this on Medium:

I've started a series of articles for Buttoncult.com on lesser known PS2 action games. This will be the first of ten, releasing weekly. Hopefully somebody here will get a kick out of it (besides me)!

I assume you know but the Berserk manga was an enormous influence on the Souls and Bloodborne games. Like, literal theft in many cases.OldBailey wrote: ↑March 14th, 2021, 2:40 pm I've started a series of articles for Buttoncult.com on lesser known PS2 action games. I've never read the manga but yeah, I'm aware that Miyazaki is something of a super fan. Even with this game being my only exposure, I can see some of the parallels.Marlew wrote: ↑March 14th, 2021, 9:04 pmI assume you know but the Berserk manga was an enormous influence on the Souls and Bloodborne games. I do wonder whether this game itself ended up having some influence on the combat style established in Demon's - the slow, heavy two handed weapons (and associated animations) are very reminiscent of how Guts is portrayed here. Some of the creature design too, though I can't speak to how much of that is derived from the manga.
Complete speculation of course but not inconceivable that Miyazaki and other devs on the team may have played this and taken some inspiration.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I've never played it, but I wouldn't be surprised. Heard it's very well regarded and I'll defo give it a try if the opportunity ever arises.OldBailey wrote: ↑March 14th, 2021, 9:33 pmI've never read the manga but yeah, I'm aware that Miyazaki is something of a super fan. I would recommend the manga, by the way. I'm far from a big manga fan, but Berserk is one of the best things I've read full stop. A very dark, philosophical, touching, funny, action-packed, extraordinary work. The level of detail in the artwork and the world building is unfathomable.
If you don't have the stomach for that much, the 1997 anime series (available on YouTube) gives an excellent account of probably the most famous arc. After watching that, there was absolutely no way I could miss out on the manga. It's very character and action-focused, lots of camaraderie, action and philosophy, but it builds and builds to something you will never have seen. Please don't spoil it there's any chance you'll watch it!
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Sounds great, I'll give it a go when the mood strikes me. The storytelling in-game was terrible unfortunately, though I suspect it may hit differently if you're already familiar with the setting.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I'm doing my Dishonored level write-ups again, and these are the last few as I am now up to Death of the Outsider - end of the series as of now, and I think confirmed by Harvey Smith to be the end of the saga concerning the events surrounding the reign of the Kaldwins.
Of the five missions in this game I've posted entries for the first three so far:
One Last Fight:
https://dunwalldiaries.blogspot.com/202 ... ion-1.html
Follow the Ink:
https://dunwalldiaries.blogspot.com/202 ... ion-2.html
The Bank Job:
https://dunwalldiaries.blogspot.com/202 ... ion-3.html
Particularly pleased with the last one as I was fortunate enough to get a small contribution from Dana Nightingale, a level designer from Arkane Studios who worked on The Bank Job as well as the Clockwork Mansion and The Flooded District. You should check out her Twitter where she has posted some maps and workflows from her design processes that are (at least to an obsessive Dishonored fan like me) a joy to pore over.

Just finished playing Balan Wonderworld and found it to be a really fun, creative game with some delightfully off-kilter design ideas. It's been repeated ad nauseum but it does feel in many ways like a lost 6th gen era platformer and if you have any love for those games, you might be surprised by how much there is to enjoy here. I have some extended thoughts on the game and its oddly hostile reception in a review over at Buttoncult for anyone that's interested.

I wrote this article for FYV Gaming on why hasn't a sports or racing game won a game of the year award.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Nice article. I'd assume the reason is simply because racing and sports games never really bring anything new to the table. They come more polished, more slick, more shiny than the previous game in the series, or stand on the shoulders of other giants of the genre(s), but are never really more than the latest version in a series.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Sports and racing games certainly used to garner some of the highest accolades back in the 8 and 16 bit days.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Interesting notion, Kurt, and enjoyable article. Very very long time since I considered a sports game even part of the rotation but they used to be legitimate favourites. Probably not been a genuine best ever since Sensi, though.
