Feb 8 - Live A Live (Switch)
Feb 22 - Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (Steam Deck) (Feb 23 - Best Ending)
Mar 1 - Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS5)
Apr 30 - Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (PS5)
May 19 - Final Fantasy XIII (Steam Deck)
May 22 - Dicey Dungeons (Steam Deck)
May 24 - Klonoa: Empire of Dreams (Steam Deck - GBA emulation)
Jun 19 - Need For Speed Unbound (PS5)
Aug 9 - Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS)
Aug 12 - Klonoa: Moonlight Museum (Steam Deck - WonderSwan emulation)
Aug 15 - Mutazione (Steam Deck)
Sep 17 - Horizon Forbidden West (PS5)
Oct 24 - Triangle Strategy (Switch)
Nov 7 - Ridge Racer 2 (Steam Deck - PSP Emulation)
I played this after listening to the episode. Fun, but there's this weird thing where if you're drifting and there's a corner that then turns the other direction the car still goes around it on rails. Music is great and it still looks good for a PSP game.

The game is split into tours. The credits play half way through the pro tours. Up to this point the game was easy. Then the fun began. The rest of the pro tours were challenging 1 on 1 events and the EX tours could get tough on the final races. I quit there and counted it as complete as the max tours seem silly.

Nov 18 - Death's Door (Steam Deck)
I thought this was more of an indie soulslike for some reason. Then I heard all the Zelda mentions at the start of the podcast and stopped to play it.

I like it quite a bit. It controls really well. The enemies and bosses have great tells to their attacks and it's fun to fight them without feeling cheated when I died. The story is solid but not deep, which is actually what I want from these types of games. Advancing through dungeons isn't complicated.

One big issue I had was with the way the game looked, specifically the colours. They were so muted.

Nov 18 - Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament (Steam Deck - GBA emulation)
Not to be confused with Klonoa 2 on the PS2. This is the third in the handheld entries in the series. Namco have polished the style of puzzle platformer over the 3 games and this is the best in the handheld series. It does look a bit nicer than the first GBA game. The levels start very easy, this would be sold to children who never played a Klonoa game after all, but by the fifth and final area it has some of the trickiest levels in the series outside of bonus levels. It keeps all the mechanics from the previous games and adds a few more in other places such as the moveable flower pots enemies can be chucked into to make vines.

The downsides are the same as the first GBA game. There are autoscrolling levels which aren't too bad, but the hoverboard levels are even worse. They've changed them from side on to into the screen levels. I hate those on 16-bit systems. They also put in water levels for the first time. They're typical slow moving affairs. The game even jokes about this as Klonoa can't swim, so he's in a diving suit. Despite those nitpicks, the game is great.

Nov 19 - Klonoa Beach Volleyball (Steam Deck - PS1 emulation)
I still can't imagine the conversations at Namco that led to this existing.

"Ok, we need to plan our 2002 game releases. What have you got?"
"How about a fun Klonoa spinoff with characters from across the series?"
"Hmmm, he hasn't been massively successful. Will it be a fighting game, a party game, a racer?"
"Nah, volleyball!"
"Um okaaay. What system will it be on? We have Klonoa games on PS2 and GBA in 2001 with more GBA games in 2002."
"PS1!"
"Uhhh, in 2002? I'll have to see what the boss thinks."
Boss: "Do it!"
Namco America "What?? No!!".
Namco Europe: "Yes please. But we don't want that second GBA game."

On to the game itself. Games are 2v2. There are three important buttons: pass, shoot and super shot. Shot doubles as a jump block when defending. Courts are effectively 3x3 grids either side of the net. The direction pressed when shooting directs where the ball goes on the opponents side. If a team gets a score in a square it's highlighted. Get three in a row on the grid and the special shot becomes available and scores 2 points if successful. More rows highlighted at the same time increases the points earned from a special shot. The game is fun but not complex. The championship mode contains 5 rounds and has three difficulty levels. Level 1 is really easy and level 2 can be a challenge. I couldn't finish the final boss on level 3. Characters have different stats. I usually choose Popka for his speed covering the ground and Lolo as she is a good blocker.

One Klonoa game left now. :)

Aug 5th - Streets of Rage 4 (Switch)
Aug 7th - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

Sep 30th - Cocoon (Xbox Series S)
Oct 1st - Dordogne (Xbox Series S)

Nov 20th - Spiderman 2 (PS5)

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this. First experience on the PS5 that's made me really seen what the console can do. Some impressive technical tricks and set pieces, gorgeous visuals, insane fast travel and lovely use of the controller. I don't normally care about all that stuff, but on my new TV it really does shine.

Game wise, it's nothing massively different to the first title, but it's all just incrementally better; and those small gains do add up.

Combat is better. Side quest variety is better. Both main character arcs are better. Mary Jane sections are better. Traversal is better.

I'm not so into the villains in this game, but I thought where they allowed the story to go for the 'good guys' was really well handled.

I also fell in love with photo mode. I never normally engage with that feature but I spent dozens of hours with it here. I'm pretty pleased with some of the results too:

Insomniac are a very talented team. You could see their potential back on Sunset Overdrive and it's being fully realised here. They're the best at what they do around, on the big AAA stage, in my eyes. I'd far rather Platinum a breezy, fun, colourful game like this than slog through another dour 50 hour open world game.

Not quite feeling the perfect scores on some sites, but I think in general I've felt like 2023 has had tons of great games, if nothing overly revelatory from what I've experienced, bar perhaps some of the building systems in TOTK. But I'd say this has comfortably been the game I've most enjoyed just spending time with this year. It's just a joy to pick up and play.

Excited to see where the next one goes story wise, though I do think the gameplay or setting will need a twist to stay fresh...

I've wondered how Insomniac can keep getting games out so quickly in this time where every other developer is taking at least 4 years to get an AAA game out. They're basically keeping Sony's first party releases afloat at the moment when it comes to single player games with the only announced one being Wolverine. They must have some great processes in place to enable them to do this.

Played this via Netflix games on my tablet. It's a fun premise and is a good game, but it's not perfect. The difficulty curve is fairly broken, three quarters of the game is so easy that you just breeze through it without pausing, and the final part of the game is just a sudden brick wall with several puzzles defying logic or not really making sense even after you've stumbled across the answer. All in all, a fun if flawed experience that could easily be expanded and improved upon for a sequel.

Oh it's still an absolute belter. Just relentless action from the moment you start the game to the end (aside from the numerous lengthy cutscenes, I suppose). But it just goes and goes, bang bang bang, non-stop. I even had to stop a few times as it was genuinely starting to give me a headache (possibly a combination of getting older, sitting too close to the screen and having my headphones too loud?), but this is top notch third person shooting all the way. Aside from a resolution boost I can't think of many ways you could improve this as an out and out action game. Shame the series died really, because I'd be up for more.

Enjoyable romp, combat is smooth, looks really good but the story is nigh on batshit, 20hrs to complete it with a few side quests done & i still dont have a clue what the plot was about. Other than that its a pretty solid title, was loads more i could do after the credits but i want to get to other games & chipping away at the backlog that i keep adding games to. Well worth the €35 i spent on it.

Super Mario RPG
I was quite enjoying this at first but grew less fond of it the further I got into the game. It's full of charm and I loved the new art style but by the end I just felt like I was on autopilot in the battles, other than in the bosses which require some more thought. I have had a similar problem with the few other turn based RPGs I 've played like the Pokemon games and Yakuza Like a Dragon. I imagine you will have got more out of this if you played the original. 6/10

Yeah, I find pretty much every JRPG is like this really. I enjoy them, but by the time you're levelled up enough and have decent weapons you can just clear every fight other than bosses by spamming attack.

A traditional 2D JRPG in the vein of early Final Fantasy games, this was never released in the west until a few years ago when Piko Interactive published a physical cartridge for the Megadrive, and now here it is on Evercade. I really enjoyed this, average story but it looks really nice and there are loads of interesting spells and summons to use in combat. Clocked the game in just over 20 hours, so perfect length for this type of game really. It's great!

November 26th: Yakuza 6 (PS4)

Played this for the Cane and Rinse podcast and had a good time with it, despite some misgivings. My full thoughts are out on the Patreon cut of the issue/episode and will soon be publicly available.

November 30th: Deathsmiles II (Switch)

I received a physical copy of Deathsmiles I & II and took it with me commuting and on my first ever try of Deathsmiles II I ended up clearing it on a single credit (with Rosa)! I had to pause after phase 1 of the final boss fight as my train had reached the station and then sat down somewhere to fight (and bomb) through the next 2 phases.

I also reached far into the final stage of Deathsmiles 1 (which I had already played quite a bit on the Xbox 360). When I tried that again later on the big screen, my run ended prematurely. I don't know, it looks like I'm better at bullet hell in handheld mode, due to being closer to the screen, or something. Because micro dodging on the big TV across the room when sat on the couch just doesn't work all that great for me.

So I caught every monkey and got the true ending by capturing Specter. This was also one of the very few games where I got all the trophies so pretty happy with that! The gadgets are diverse and well utilised with some interesting puzzles being used for them particularly in the latter stages. The monkeys themselves are really memorable and charismatic designs even with the low poly PS1 look. The monkeys are really fun to catch using a wide variety of gadgets, tactics and puzzle solving to nab them. The localisation for PAL territories shines with the Monkey Encyclopedia where every monkey you catch is displayed. This is full of goofy silliness and wordplay here with my favourite bio being a monkey called Amiga who is described as not very PC. Also worthy of praise is the soundtrack, no other platformer from this time sounded quite like this and really makes it stand out. Also the fact that the soundtrack for a game about monkeys is jungle music makes quite a bit of sense when you think about it!

However there are definitely a few things holding this back from being one of my favourites. Firstly, the controls are a bit of a mixed bag. Using the right stick to use your gadget is a interesting idea but years of the standard controller scheme for 3D games make me want to use the stick to change the camera which is now relegated to the D-Pad. Took me a while to get used to how this camera operates which is not too bad mostly but has its moments where it is pointing at the wrong thing you want to focus on. Also jumping with the right shoulder buttons just does not feel right to me. Spike’s jump is quite stiff compared to many platforming heroes and it is very difficult to change direction mid jump. Those races with Buzz were a complete nightmare and required jumping skills that I could not pull off no matter how much I tried. Thankfully those stages were optional. The double jump is also very inconsistent to pull off and there were far too many times I fell into a pit because the second jump would not register. This is a game where the rewind feature on the PS4 makes it a lot more tolerable than it would have been back in 1999. The worst offender when it came to the controls was the row boat. That thing was complete and utter shite to control with its fiddly unreliable handling. I would spend ages just trying to get it in a straight line. Thankfully when you have the propeller later on in the game you can skip those sections entirely. Minigames with the exception of the last one (a shmup) are pretty ropy affairs with unintuitive and sloppy controls but are mercifully not mandatory to complete the game. Lastly while the music is consistently excellent the voice acting is less so. I was playing the PAL version and while I enjoyed Specter’s suave demeanour, other characters like Buzz just sounded like posh six year olds and made me feel like I was watching a CBeebies show.

But despite my complaints the longer I stuck with this, the more I got used to how this game operates and I really enjoyed it. It is certainly one of the most unique and creative outings on the PS1 and I was glad I finally got to properly experience it after all these years. Ape Escape is a nice example of how diverse and creative 3D platformers were getting despite only being released three years after Super Mario 64. I definitely want to try out the PS2 sequels and I hope some of the control issues I had in this get smoothed out in those latter entries. A flawed but fun title.

This was on the Renovation cartridge, which is a collection of 12 reasonably rare Megadrive games released in the west by Renovation, a publisher which I didn't really have any awareness of previously. It's often hailed as one of the best carts on the Evercade, but to be honest it's not one of my favourites, although I'm trying to give the games a good try.

Valis is a 2D action platformer, along the lines of Shinobi or similar. It has a vaguely anime styling to it, and there are some nice looking cut scenes (which I largely skipped because they're soooooo slow). The main character moves a little too slowly, but there's actually quite a fun game in here. I beat it in little over an hour and I'll admit ended up save-scumming the final boss which was a pain in the ass. As with most games of this style, if you die you lose most of your weapon power-ups, making bosses very difficult if you don't do them first try. Having said that, the final boss was the only one in the game I didn't do first try, it's not a particularly difficult game.

There is a decent magic system in the game that I didn't discover until the final stage, but lots of different spells and multiple weapons and power-ups to find throughout the stages. All in all, it's not a game I'd recommend anyone seek out and pay over the odds for, especially on Megadrive, but if you have an Evercade and the Renovation cart, it's well worth an hour or two of your time. Bizarrely there is no Valis 2 included in the collection, but Valis 3 is here, so I'll give that one a go soon.

Pikmin 4
I’m glad I played it, I found it very moreish as it has a nice gameplay loop but I think I’ve had my fill with it after 17 hours. I’m not really tempted to go back to the previous games and not even sure I’d play another, but it’s certainly unique as I would say it’s quite different to even Tinykin despite the comparisons between both games. 7/10
