The videogame music thread
Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
So over the past month I’ve been doing this challenge over on Twitter:
My choices are in this youtube playlist, if you fancy something a bit random to listen to:

Usually, I wait until the dark days of Autumn to dip into spooky games, but once in a while one grabs my attention and I can't wait until then to try it out. Somehow I missed The Shrouded Isle, released way back in 2017, a creepy, nauseating game where you play the role of a tyrannical leader of a violent, puritanical cult. At heart, it's a management sim, where you must make the hard decisions of who to punish, who to sacrifice, and even handing out marriage advice, all while taking notes on the smallest perceived sins of your followers. Think Midsommar Tycoon.
The soundtrack is chilling on its own. This piece, Skyclad Faith, which sounds like an homage to the works of legendary Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, captures the vibe of The Shrouded Isle perfectly.

Hi, new to the podcast (a colleague told me about it) and I've been looking to see if Kyrandia Malcolm's Revenge has been discussed. Love that soundtrack. Some good sax parts and others with a nice rhythm. My search on the forum has so far come up blank, and it'll take me some time to catch up on all the podcasts! Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Hi msknight, and welcome.
We haven't featured anything from the Kyrandia games as far as I can recall. Are there any particular pieces you'd like us to play on the show?
Enjoy catching up with the backlog.

Hi ratsoalbion,
Thank you for the welcome I'll have to wait until I get home after work, but there are a couple of tracks I'd be interested to hear your opinions of... but I know you've got quite the long list to work through already !
I had the music from the game CD - I'm not sure where the tracks are on the internet. I'd have to search.

I just finished last year's Control, and this song plays over one of the best sequences in the game. As you take a funicular style cart through an endless forest of immense pillars stretching to either side as far as you can see, this tango plays around you. It maybe helps that I listen to and enjoy a lot of music in Finnish, and particularly enjoyed the character of Ahti whose voice actor also sings this piece. For a game with minimal use of music, this might just be one of the most memorable musical moments in games I've played.

The full version of the Bugsnax song is out there now. It might be too dangerous an ear worm to link here though. It’s weapons grade catchy.
Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
Started thinking about all the gaming I had done in lockdown and picked out some tracks that stood out:
Animal Crossing New Horizons 5am
Moved my youngest from a cot to a toddler bed at the start of lockdown which was a difficult transition. One of the early memories on a particularly early morning of him being up too early was popping Animal Crossing on and hearing this lovely joyful piece of music. It made me smile even though I was in the midst of grumpy/tired at the time.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Ignition Flame and The Arsenal
Chosen a remix of an old track as well as an original piece from this game.
First up the new piece which is Ignition Flame. I didn't particularly enjoy the character however this theme is a superb fast paced piece of music.
Still more fighting is one of my favourite pieces in FFVII and I loved the fact they decided to do several rearrangements of the theme throughout the game. The Arsenal is a tough boss fight near the end and it is incredible and one that feels better the louder it is. Only negative is the awful name
One I would love to see performed live should we get back to normal and concerts can go ahead again:
Lost Words Beyond The Page Memories
I picked this up on Stadia (it's an exclusive for a year) after watching the trailer and it looking interesting as well as a lovely sounding OST. I enjoyed the music in this game so much I bought it which makes it the first album I had bought in years. You can listen to the tracks for a few times for free I believe on the link below.
People rightly have issues with Stadia etc however if it didn't have a limited library I doubt I would've ever seen or picked this game up when I did.
There are several beautiful pieces of music in this game however Memories is the one that stood out to me at a particularly poignant moment in the game.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Eye for an Eye
This theme plays in a couple of poignant scenes which we obviously cannot talk about but is a powerful piece of music based around the cycle of violence.
The Last Of Us Main Menu Theme
I went back to this straight after completing part two and the title music which is also used in various places is a hauntingly ambient piece of music and is The Last Of Us to me:

One review of Paper Mario: The Origami King I read described it as the video game equivalent of "a distracting beach read." While it isn't the series revelation Odyssey is, and probably won't win over fans who want more hardcore RPG mechanics, I've found it to be a light, fun (and remarkably funny) adventure with lovely settings, interesting mechanics, and amazing music.
This track, the opening title theme, says it all about what expect from Origami King.

I never actually got to play Revenant Wings, but Final Fantasy XII is my favorite game in the series, so I've recently been eying a copy of the largely forgotten direct sequel on the DS.
The game features demakes of some of Final Fantasy XII's tracks, and the music, along with some of the pixel art versions of the characters, is one of the biggest draws for me.
Just check out this version of the Rabanastre Lowtown theme!

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
On my recent adventure to the Island of mutual combat, I took my Megadrive Mini with me to kill the quarantine time as best I could. My first few days were spent playing a lot of Dune 2, but it wasn't until I booted up Phantasy Star 4 that I really fell into a big cycle of shutting the curtains, making tea and adventuring into Motavia, until I could go and explore the outside world that is. Or so I thought.
When I finally got my wristband after my test came back negative, I made a quick walk outside the hotel to get a bit of sun and to say hello to my colleagues before inevitably heading back to my room. This 16 bit world with many fascinating pitfalls and storylines had captured my imagination, and this particular song from the super challenging "Air Castle", ranks amongst its finest moments.

An interesting one here. I discovered the composer of this piece during one of Jessica Curry’s curated BBC shows and promptly fell in love. In my opinion Get Even is a distinctly unremarkable game which is elevated astronomically by the quality of its soundtrack. I defy anyone to listen to this and not want to play the game. I am closely following his progress as I believe in the future he might be presenting a BBC series of his own.

Nice - added to the list.
We've featured Olivier's work a few times on the show before, pieces from Remember Me, Bound by Flame, Vampyr, A Plague Tale: Innocence and Assassin's Creed IV: Freedom Cry.

His body of work is quite remarkable. It’s strange to start following a composer rather than a game creator but his pieces are like music to my ears....ratsoalbion wrote: ↑August 1st, 2020, 10:36 pm Nice - added to the list.

There’s an absolutely fascinating video of how he integrated music into the game if anyone is interested.

Another one (sorry)!
I’m surprised this hasn’t been featured already. It’s tricky to pick out a piece from the wonderful score for Red Dead Redemption 2 but if I had to then this would be it.
I don’t think I can say anything about the scene it plays in without spoiling the game. Needless to say the piece integrates dynamically and flawlessly within the game.

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
If I've missed this earlier, my apologises but the last couple of days I've been enjoying rehearing the Timesplitters 2 soundtrack.
One of my favourite series, this was a lighthearted FPS that firmly remains on my 'where's the next one?' list. A remaster would be acceptable as well. The plot was patchy (from non-existent in the first game) but the gameplay was the thing and this was something Timesplitters nailed.
Plus you could create your own levels with an ingame level editor.
It's from this that I've picked this song - a glorious example of the soundtrack that series composer Graeme Norgate managed to pay homage to all the era's and locales in history that were the locations for the levels.
As with many others in the series, it starts slow and builds an element of anxiety, mirroring the levels own pacing
