Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I work at a library and we have a weekly podcast called the All the Books Show. This week, we talked about music we listen to while we read and I did a few supplement episodes.
One is an interview with Larry Oji of Overclocked Remix about the website and it's history...
https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/off- ... -larry-oji
The other is a playlist episode of Overclocked Remix tracks...
https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/an-o ... x-playlist
Both were a lot of fun to do.

Hey, I thought Three Kind Words had ended because you didn't post a new episode for a month or so. How are you doing with listeners? I've listened to a couple of episodes but only listen to ones for films I've actually seen or have a strong interest thing (same thing with Cane and Rinse really) but keep hoping a new episode will pop up on a film I am interested in.
Hope you keep on going.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Got busy with some urgent life stuff and din't get to check for a response- wow, guys, thanks for the feedback. Not used to getting genuine responses on my stuff most places.
EDIT: Apparently allowing YouTube to automatically place midroll ads means that sometimes, it will do exactly that. I've decided to just straight up disable monetization on just about all my videos and all of my content going forward until such a time that I feel like I've earned it. I'd rather make content people enjoy watching and have them actually watch it than rake in the 10 cents per video.
Thanks for the other feedback. The video was a bit longer and I'm definitely looking to pare it down a bit (and have in my newer video) and having a narrower focus will hopefully mean less abrupt cutting.
Anyways, the new video is out-please let me know if you guys have any more suggestions for improving it
edit: man this youtube embedder is picky
Wha? This is news to me. Does anyone know if there's a setting I overlooked by chance that might have ramped up the advertisement quantity? I had no idea how many ads YouTube serves.Ray wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2019, 2:52 amI took a look, but stopped watching after the 3rd ad in first less than ten minutes (around one ad per 3 minutes, no thanks). Anyway, what I managed to see was not bad at all. I felt the quick cuts (near the beginning, where you talk about other games) are too fast / abrupt.

Absolutely prefer the honest feedback. Duly noted. Looking back at that video in retrospect I got really carried away with the prefacing history of the game. I'm an incredibly wordy writer- I write like I have an hour when I really only have about ten minutes. I've been working hard at paring it down- originally that video was twice the length- but seems I need to do a bit more.clippa wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2019, 3:41 amYeah, I've got adblock enabled but I only got halfway through too. It feels like you're just dryly relaying facts. You've clearly done your research but it doesn't feel like you've found your voice.
It's tight and focused, but I'd much rather hear you relaxed, waxing lyrical or joking around than just giving me a history lesson. I didn't find it entertaining, I'm sure you'd rather I was honest than just giving you an empty slap on the back.
Duly noted on the cuts. I was trying to follow the example of some prolific content creators who keep their cuts tight, fast and fluid but got a little heavy handed in my attempt to avoid letting the screen get stale. I am working on striking that balance between the humor and the history- I think I was a bit funnier in my new video but if people think there's room for more humor, I'll definitely take that into account- my next video is going to be about one of the worst games I've played in years, so there'll be plenty of humor there.Simonsloth wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2019, 9:31 amI’m on the opposite side of the fence to clippa. I think YouTube has enough opinion to last a lifetime so some objectivity and history is more than welcome.
I do agree that the quick cuts at the beginning were a bit too quick and personally turning your enthusiasm up a fraction would make it more likely to come back for your next vid.
I enjoyed it overall though and let me know when your next one is out.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
A whole bunch of stuff came up few a few weeks, so all three of my shows got delayed, but they're back on schedule (Three Nice Things just did Son of the Mask, which was...the worst)FemalePheromones wrote: ↑August 12th, 2019, 5:14 amHey, I thought Three Kind Words had ended because you didn't post a new episode for a month or so. We have Batman and Robin, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Season of the Witch planned for the next few.
Thanks for asking! And listening!

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Ah man I'm definitely up for the first 2!
As for SotW I'm actually going to be doing that on my own podcast (that I'm not ready to properly announce yet) soon so will save that until after I've seen it.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
That was loads better! I enjoyed that and didn't get bored!
There's definitely something about games like that running on limited hardware, the low framerate and janky look can all add up to a really unique feeling, games like that can have a great atmosphere about them.
I love that in this modern gaming era of 4k bells and whistles there are still people interested in imposing limitation on themselves and seeing where that takes them creatively, people making games for old hardware like firelancer on the wonderswan, or people making games on those fantasy consoles and stuff like ufo 50.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Super glad you enjoyed it! this is more in line with what most of my content will be about/like. the next one is definitely gonna have a much funnier tinge to it as I'm reviewing an awful game.clippa wrote: ↑August 13th, 2019, 10:48 pmThat was loads better! I enjoyed that and didn't get bored!

purposefully underpowered shit is neat- Have you seen Teenage Engineering and Panic's newest little handheld?
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Oh wow, they do those hipster audio things that I'm always tempted to buy but can't justify the overinflated price and lack of functionality.
Oh christ, I just looked, aye, I've seen that before, bloody crank handle and everything
I can't help but think that it's a fashion accessory first and foremost. I can't help but feel that their intentions are not good, not good for gaming at least.
It might be a prejudicial soul recoiling, I can't tell nowadays, but it smells all wrong to me.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I think the intentions are probably pretty fine- just, you know, it's hipster bullshit. Very pretty hipster bullshit. Teenage Engineering's stuff is all very videogamey and cutesy like that device- just look at the Pocket Operators.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Back again with another one, here's that humorous tinge I was talking about bringing. God, this one hurt to play.
Final Fronts is a perfect example of why sometimes, it's really not worth it to target late adopters.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I dunno, it seems quite cool, that Play Date thing. It's had a largely positive reaction and Edge were all over it. Nice that there are people still trying to keep things interesting and different I think.clippa wrote: ↑August 14th, 2019, 6:10 amOh wow, they do those hipster audio things that I'm always tempted to buy but can't justify the overinflated price and lack of functionality.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I wouldn't wipe my arse on that rag. That's not gonna sway me!
Hmmm. I don't know, that crank is a novelty gimmick if ever I saw one. Something even nintendo would balk at.
I'm all for experimenting with input devices, I think there's a long way to go yet.
Most gamers are more than happy with the big two playing it safe and just sticking with the same dual analogue stick controller design each generation.
Everyone lost their shit on a forum once when they were asking what everyone wanted from the next generation of consoles. People went crazy when I suggested that the 360 pad might not be perfect.
An analogue crank though? That's a huge leap back to the pong days.
It doesn't smell right to me. They're not entirely serious, it's a novelty, flash in the pan gimmicky playtoy for twats with beards and too much money in their pockets. It's deliberately designed to be exactly that. We're not gonna have interesting devs queuing up to realise their crank based dreams and push indie gaming to new exciting realms.
We're gonna have a week of bell ends fondling these on the tube and then an eternity of yellow plastic tat gathering dust in drawers.
That crank is the sort of twee crrrraaaazy idea that should have been wiped off a whiteboard during the early brainstorming sessions.
I could be wrong but that's my gut reaction to the thing. I wouldn't want to put it in the same box as the fantasy consoles, firelancer and ufo 50. I'd like to put it in the box marked "shit for cunts" instead.
Like I said, it's all just a prejudiced (oops, I said prejudicial up there, I think that's something else entirely!) gut feeling but that's all I can really go on until the thing is out in the wild, they're holding a lot back.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
I can't say it bothers me too much. I doubt I'll buy one, but don't begrudge anyone else who wants to. I probably wouldn't dismiss anyone who's interested in it as a cunt, either.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Hehe, yeah. When I saw it, I rolled my eyes and moved on with my life.
Just I felt like I was being asked to put that gut reaction into words so I might have exaggerated a few of the feelings there, rendered them a bit larger in 3d so I could see exactly what they were.
No, I don't want one either and I am a cunt!

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Thing is, I'd be willing to bet that most the 12 games coming out for it end up being really good. They've got some big names lined up to develop for it, and I like the concept (monthly release, everyone playing together etc.) I bet the forums will be alive with discussion.
Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Well, I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'd put money on them all being shit.
It's not for me, let's put it that way.
I'm not really interested in "experience" games, short story driven stuff, or watercooler discussions about such things.
I have no urge to discuss the finer points of cranky john's piss chug adventure with a load of chin stroking bores.
Even if they make proper gamey games, they'd be a nightmare to play on that tiny black and white screen.
Just .... do it over there.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
Am I being a bit of a dick?
I remember one forum I joined and Stanshall was like "It's alright, I can vouch for clippa (or whatever I called myself, I went through a phase of thinking I was a witch so it might have been something laughably gothy) he can just be a bit blunt"
and I think that's a polite way of saying it.
I have an unrefined, tabloidy way of throwing around heavy words.
Obviously I want to try and voice my feelings, I don't think there's a fine line between that and being a dick, it's just that I am a bit of a dick and that spills through sometimes.
The last thing I want is for someone who thinks this playdate thing is really cool and interesting to see me running my stupid mouth and feeling uncomfortable, or thinking that it's just not worth talking about it favourably.
Sorry Alex, I think you were trying to steer me in that regard and I took it as a call to double down!
I think I spit my opinion with vehement conviction sometimes when the reality is I'm really self doubting and unsure of myself and relaxed and open minded . It's just a gut feeling and I'm prepared to be totally wrong about it.
I don't think I'd go so far as to shell out the 150 notes and see for myself, but I'll definitely be interested to see the other games that get shown.
Thanks for the new video link, kacey, will give that a watch later!

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
It's time to announce my horror film podcast: The Blood Shed
We actually have 3 different podcasts:
The Blood Shed - in which we cover all sorts of horror films
Slasher Series - in which we will go through an entire series of slasher films from start to finish (we have started with the Halloween series)
Hammercast - in which we are going through every horror film from Hammer Film Productions in chronological order dating back to 1955.
The Blood Shed episodes will release every 2 weeks while Slasher Series and Hammercast will release every 4 weeks. So a 4 week cycle will look like this:
1st Monday - The Blood Shed episode
2nd Monday - Slasher Series episode
3rd Monday - The Blood Shed episode
4th Monday - Hammercast episode
All episodes can be found on Itunes, Spotify etc...
We're on Instagram and Twitter and we also have a sub on Reddit as a place to try and keep all relevant information in one place.
That seems like a bit of an outpouring of information but I thought it was worth getting it all out there.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
After I put my Gameboy Pocket post up on my blog, that happily tipped my blog visits over 1100 views, which is nice.
I appreciate that a lot of that may be bots, and that if someone did actually visit, it doesn't necessarily mean that they read a single word - but it's cool to think that maybe someone found it, read it, and enjoyed an aspect of something.
It will have been up a year in November and has been a real joy to update with stuff as I fancy it.
I'm not doing it really for any other reason than its fun, and I tend to look at things differently when I think about writing it down, which is rewarding in its own weird personal way.

Re: Shameless Self Promotion
If anybody were to read about your Game Boy escapade and not feel at least slightly better about the world afterwards, there's something wrong with them.
I don't check in on your blog very often considering you post all the same stuff on here anyway, but I'm sure it will bring great joy to somebody sooner or later.
You're doing the Lord's work. Keep it up, my friend!
