27th Jan - Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (Switch)
1st Feb - New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (Switch)
9th Mar - Crackdown 3 (Xbox One X)
6th May - Mortal Kombat 11: Story Mode (PS4 Pro)
12th May - God Of War '18 (PS4 Pro)
19th May - Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4 Pro)
23rd May - Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4 Pro)
26th May - Devil May Cry 5 (PS4 Pro)
1st Jun - Days Gone (PS4 Pro)
8th Jun - Blood & Truth (PS4 Pro)
8th Aug - Resident Evil 2 (PS4 Pro)
6th Sep - Man of Medan (PS4 Pro)
12th Oct - A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS4 Pro)
27th Oct - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare '19 (PS4 Pro)
23rd Nov - Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order (PS4 Pro)
Fallen Order is the perfect example of an average game to me. It was fine, but unremarkable. It takes cues from Uncharted and Dark Souls, but doesn't quite hit the mark for either.
I'm pleased I've played it but I won't be going back to mop up the missing collectables or start another playthrough.
One other thing, they really need to patch the HDR in this game. I'm playing on a PS4 Pro through a damn nice OLED TV and everything looked so washed out. I had to turn the HDR off in the end. That's one thing I've noticed about a lot of third party games, the HDR is rarely good compared to games that are PlayStation exclusive.

Well, I don't have any experience with that version, so I can't help there.
Like FF8 and 12, it does some interesting things while also being quite divisive. That general reaction to 15 is why I wanted to play it in the first place. Compare that to me skipping FF13 due to its reputation.

Re: Games Completed 2019
- Spoiler: show
Quick description time. Our hero, Ray, after being smacked on the head by top secret cargo falling from the sky is then used as a host by the alien in said cargo. This gives Ray the ability to mind-read and also a big pink hand sticking out of his head (that only he can see) which can grab things.
While the game's art style is not something I would jump at, it grew on me and I did appreciate the work put into the cardboard cutout element of it.
Gameplay-wise, its a modern point and click style adventure with light platforming elements. It keeps everything rather simple. The adventure part of the game is limited to reading minds and obtaining items from the environment, people and their thoughts and using them. The items are all grabbed by the big pink hand as stickers, which ties in nicely to the art style and the game's title. Its straightforward as far as the point and click genre goes, but its logic is good. I only got stuck once even though I am not an experienced adventure game player. The game is broken into distinct levels (or chapters) and items do not carry over.
The platforming is just some very basic jumps. I didn't miss many jumps simply because the game never tested me in that regard, good too because its a wee bit floaty. There are also enemy agents who kill Ray if they reach him. They're usually easy to avoid but you can also read their mind and grab some zzzs from sleepy agents and Ray masks from other's thoughts to use on the agents that get in the way. There are also pins(back to the cardboard aesthetic) stuck in the environment that the big pink hand can grab to help get around.
As an aside, I used the DualShock 4's trackpad as a novelty for a lot of this grabbing and it wasn't that bad.
The plot is solid. The humour rarely made me laugh but did make me smile and I didn't groan at it. The voice acting is silly but in a decent way. Ray may not be smart but he has common sense and knows everything happening to him is crazy, so I found him likeable enough.
I'd describe the whole game as very pleasant with a good bit of charm. It doesn't have any frustrating parts either. Its not particularly special but I found it to be an enjoyable 7 or 8 out of 10 game.

Bad first impression, but then becomes one of the deepest combat systems Platinum has ever produced. Easily amongst my favourite games they've made.

Death Stranding
For a game that wasn't on my radar and I only got on a whim this has ended up being my game of the year and one of my all time favourites. Also a game I feel like talking about on a podcast first since Skyrim.
I think I got what Kojima was going for early doors so stuck through it thick and thin.
The reviews are polorised because if you are not invested in this and it needs your 100% investment (I havent played a single game since launch day for it even though I've had Star Wars Fallen Order here) you can bounce off it so easily.
Will go into more detail on the thread as I have a lot to talk about and digest.

Onimusha PS2 - 30/11
I played this game at launch in 2001, one of the first games I remember picking up after exhausting the ps2 launch line up and remember enjoying it a great deal but being a little disappointed in it's brief run time.
In 2019 I think the game mostly holds up wonderfully. Visually the game is still striking with some stunning pre rendered backgrounds and surprisingly detailed character and enemy models for such an early ps2 title. 2D and 3D elements are blended much more convincingly too than Capcom's ps1 efforts.
Elsewhere production values are similarly impressive with a beautiful fully orchestrated soundtrack and some amazing cgi cutscenes. The overall production feels lavish, expensive and nicely polished.
Gameplay wise it's a successful action focused riff on the resi formula. Combat is weighty and rewards skillful play and the insta kill counter attack is incredibly satisfying to master, if a little tricky to pull off. Even by the end there were a couple of enemy types I just couldn't figure out the timing for.
Boss fights are a bit of a let down with the prevailing tactic seemingly to just swap between weapons and spam magic attacks. They are fun but it would have been cool to see the counter attacks worked into these fights to make them feel more tactical. It's the game's most interesting mechanic and for it to be absent in the most important encounters is disappointing.
I'd also completely forgotten that there is a second playable character. Kaede's sections feel slightly under baked however with a more limited moveset and the removal of the soul absorption mechanic making engaging enemies pointless and more risky than just running past them all. In a 6 hour game I'm not sure it needed this attempt to inject some variety. Also the unnecessary boob physics are a blemish on an otherwise classy game.
Overall I enjoyed this replay a lot and plan on diving in to it's sequel soon which I have very little memory of. I've not played entries beyond the second game so looking forward to seeing how the series evolves.

Coincidentally played this around the time of the podcast. I've heard loads about how good this game's story/world is so was always intrigued to try it one day. I can agree that this game does have a good story. Very detailed and it's very different from the norm. It is very wordy and a bit dry, though. It was still enough to keep me coming back to see where things go and how things get resolved. There's a vast array of dialogue options depending on what you've learned and your stats and it lets you skip many combat scenarios, which is great because, ugh.
Combat is pretty mindless and very easy to thoughtlessly bash your way through since the protagonist can't die. He can be knocked out and you are put back to a specified point, but any damage on enemies remains. Almost all the items in the game exist for vendor fodder and nothing more. A small amount is for quest items and actual equipment. There's just nothing at all to the combat which makes things a bit boring.
I'm glad I played it for the story but, wow, I wish the rest of the game was up to that level. As a side note, I was playing this alongside someone else and we both ended up skipping an entire area (the same one) by complete accident so not great sign posting of not being able to go back on that section.

29-11 - Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS1)
Already done this last year, of course, but on Easy. So I replayed and streamed it on Hard, for Cane and Rinse's Twitch channel, also to get the Barry Burton ending that Leon brought up in the podcast we did on the game. DID IT!
4-12 - Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Beat up the final boss today. Been playing this on and off ever since I got the game, more due to my scatterbrained and easily distracted approach to tackling my backlog when not playing for CaR podcasts than anything else. And of course, it had to be a CaR podcast that finally got me to sit down and get the end credits! Planning to do some of the extra stuff before the recording, if I'm able.

1st February - Dark Souls
8th February - The Gardens Between
9th February - Quarantine Circular
20th February - Night in the woods
26th March - Ape Out
16th June - Brothers
25th June - My Friend Pedro
7th July - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
23rd July - Streets of Rage 2
27th August - DOOM (1993)
2nd October - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
6th October - Astral Chain
9th October - Untitled Goose Game
16th October - What Remains of Edith Finch
23rd October - Sayonara Wild Hearts
5th December - Ghostbusters
Definitely showing its age and at times not the best shooter around but I largely enjoyed it. The voice acting is largely great, the way you're embedded in the team as the newcomer is very funny and the atmosphere felt made it feel like a decent continuation of the Ghostbusters legacy.
It definitely repeats huge chunks of the originals story and several scenes felt like lazy retreads, but there were also some great new settings, ghosts and ideas that made me think "maybe a Ghostbusters 3 might work...?"
I don't know if you'd get a lot of enjoyment out of it if you didn't like the films, and there are some frustrating trademarks and difficulty spikes of the era, but I'm really glad I finally got to play it.

Re: Games Completed 2019
Just finished Prey (2017). Want to start again straightaway. Such a great game, love the crafting, exploration and sneaking about, getting some turrets set up and luring Typhon to them never gets old... And in general don't think I had such a bad impression of the combat as some. I actually enjoyed planning out stunning and GLOOing an enemy then finishing with the shotgun or the trusty wrench.
Next run through I'm going to go ham on Typhon powers as I only had the two, to avoid getting the turrets on me first time through.

Amazing game. Would have been my GOTY in 2017 had it not been for Breath of the wild.Jon Cheetham wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 2:04 amJust finished Prey (2017). Want to start again straightaway. Such a great game...
I strongly recommend checking out the Mooncrash DLC too, well worth for anyone who enjoyed the base game and goes on sale for next to nothing pretty frequently.

Re: Games Completed 2019
It's so good. Really a benchmark for interconnected, interactive environments.
Celebrated by listening to the Cane and Rinse ep and watching the Noah Gervais video on the game. Both really enriched it for me in terms of thinking about the themes and mechanics, and made me look forward to future runs more.
Definitely going to grab those DLC's next sale; from what I've heard there's more story around the Yu family as well.

This is my first Luigi's Mansion and I thought it was superb. Nothing mind blowing, just really solid level and puzzle design through out. Plus the animation is best in class.

Re: Games Completed 2019

Shorter and less mentally taxing than I expected. The art style helps with the perception related puzzle platforming and is pretty but didn't rub off on me. I never felt like I was stuck, just going through motions, not a good sign when puzzles are the main hook of the game.
Dec 8 - Wandersong (Switch)
I went into it pretty blind but within ten minutes it put a big smile on my face and did little to wipe that off through the rest of the game.
Mechanically it's another game with simple puzzle platforming. But Wandersong's gameplay quirk is that the right stick is used to have the bard sing one of eight notes. The great bit is that singing has so many different effects, from bigger things like interacting with ghosts (that's Act 1 so not a spoiler) to small details like changing the colour of flowers. The effect of singing varies so it rarely gets old and I would often stop and just jam on the right stick for a minute for fun. The game has a very easy difficulty but that's clearly intentional.
The characters are interesting, even the initially 1-dimensional bard. The story takes a few nice turns and gets dark when it wants to. The world design is nicely varied through the game's acts. The art style is simple but effective. The soundtrack is good, I don't think its special, but its good enough for a game where music is a big deal. That said, I'm listening to it now. (Also the soundtrack is about 4.5 hours long for a game only twice that length.)
In short, its a colourful, charming, cutesy, silly, twee, emotional, fun adventure. If any of those words put you off, it mightn't be for you but I love it and its one of my favourite games that I played this year.
Dec 8 - Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn (PS4)
Some backstory for Ardyn. His combat style didn't do much for me. Quality wise, its with Episode Prompto, i.e. better than Gladiolus, wweaker than Ignis.

Re: Games Completed 2019

A simple enough action platformer that gets hampered by a lot of questionable design decisions. Numbers pop up when dealing/taking damage except the bigger the number, the bigger it appears on screen. Numbers above 10 are big enough to block incoming attacks, causing you to take a cheap hit. The few puzzles in the game are trial & error. The inventory system is very clunky, where you need to go into your inventory to take out an item before you can use it (there are shortcuts but there are loads of items and the shortcuts get used up fast). There are also a few times where you need to wait minutes (the worst was over 5 minutes doing nothing) for a tram. Realistic? Sure. Fun? No.
The thing that bugged me the most about the game is you had an entire section where you need to get a card to access the tram. Your companion stops you from going into the tram section before you get the card. The screen right next to the one you are blocked from entering has the card and you can just purchase it instead of going through this entire area. The only thing blocking you is your companion arbitrarily not letting you go there.
Nov 27 - Archaica: The Path of Light (PC)
A top down puzzle game revolving around beams of light. The goal is to redirect them to their proper goal as the proper color. This can certainly be someone's thing but for me, it had one big issue. There are too many possibilities for the items you can place. The puzzles are pretty directionless to solve and each one only has a single solution so it can be frustrating. I am very thankful of the in-game hint system it has.
Dec 3 - City of Brass (PC)
An FPS roguelite built around melee. Except there are two ranged characters that break the game in half and turn it into a cakewalk. As an example, a late boss is flying so as melee you need to dodge its attacks until it gets low enough for you to hit it. As ranged, you kill the boss in about 5 seconds. The shops in the game are a variety of genies and you have three wishes that can be used to upgrade them so you get more powerful things from them. It would be some nice choice in the run but there are three that are leaps and bounds more useful than the rest. There are also some modifiers you can turn on at the start of a run to make things easier or harder but there are no rewards to do so. This was a good idea in concept but needed more time in their execution.
