(August) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (Nes Nersion) - PS5
(September) Dragon Quest Builders 2 - PS5
(September) Cyberpunk 2077 - PS5
(October) Final Fantasy XV - PS5

I have to say, I've been hitting some absolute bangers this year. Elden Ring, The Messenger, Hollow Knight, DQB2, FFXV, Cyberpunk, Portal...these are some of the best examples of their individual genres. The Messenger is one of the greatest platformers of all time.

201h31m, level 78, the odyssey is finally done.

Legacy of the First Blade: an unremarkable series of quests with an obnoxious support character in Darius and problematic arc for Kassandra, I mainlined this in about four hours for the sake of completionism.

The Fate of Atlantis: this however took me about 25-30 hours, and has some of the best infiltration and stealth action in the entire game. The forts in Elysium and Atlantis are fantastic and it transitions the game to straight up sci fi and fantasy imagery with surprising dexterity. The new abilities are great and the characterisation is back on form. The only down point is the drab environment of Hades which I couldn’t wait to be done with.

Those who are Treasured: the brief but meaningful coda to Kassandra’s story that takes place on yet another all new map, this time Korfu. Again the quest itself is unremarkable, but it ties Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla very nicely and shows how Kassandra is one of the most important figures in the entire mythos - even if her destiny is in many ways not enviable.

NB I finished the Lost Tales of Greece free expansion two years ago during lockdown. Thought this had the best written quests in the game.

Also noticed a bit of stuttering and pop-in playing through these DLCs, not sure if that’s my base PS4 just struggling to keep up or the save file has just become too gigantic at this point.

I was a bit underwhelmed by this one to be honest. There isn't much to it. You only get a small area to explore that is mostly closed off. Only the walled city of Mournhold and some connecting dungeons. Said dungeons are pretty large, granted, but it doesn't really compare to an entire region to explore. You get to meet Almalexia, another one of the self-made gods of this world. But she's way less interesting than Vivec, and doesn't have writing that is anywhere near as good as his. Which is a shame as she was the wife of the person you're supposed to be a reincarnation of. You'd expect that would be a chance to do some interesting character interactions, but they barely touch on it. The quests are terrible at conveying objectives to you too, making most of them a tedious slog without a walkthrough telling you where to go and who to talk to. They don't even give you any directions this time.

I think I'm giving this game a break for a while now. I still intend to go through Bloodmoon, but I think I need some distance from the game before I'm ready to jump back in. I'm hopeful it'll be better though. There's more to it, and the second expansions for these Elder Scrolls games is always better than the first anyway.

You can dodge roll and clip through the scenery and just walk your way into Sen’s fortress skipping everything you would need to do up until then. (not skipping sen’s fortress which is how i made that sound). Theres a trophy for getting boss soul weapons made i needed, i also used the soul duplication glitch to take the edge off, but its still absurdly hard. (on my 3rd play through only mind you).

This is a narrative adventure game that clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Bioshock. It's set in an alternate history where Nikola Tesla has become a hugely powerful industrialist, and has created an enormous city sized ship that serves as a haven for scientific experiments, drawing in many of the worlds great minds. Except some disaster has happened on board, and you go to explore the place to investigate and save your sister who was one of the scientists on the crew.

It's a somewhat interesting premise, and makes for some really impressive environments, as it takes the Art Deco aesthetic from Bioshock as well. But it doesn't really do much with what it sets up. At first it seems like it wants to question the ethics of Tesla and the influence he has on this world, but that fizzles out pretty quickly. Later on it brings up the idea of time travel and alternate universes, but that also doesn't really play in to anything that actually happens. The plot stays very narrowly focused on the immediate interactions of a small handful of characters. None of which are compelling or complex in any way. The Art Deco thing is a bit anachronistic as well, with this game being set too early for that style to have been in use. But maybe you could let that slide as being an alternate history thing I suppose.

The gameplay consists mostly of walking through areas and solving simple puzzles in order to open the way to progress. Usually it's not very taxing at all, as the focus is on the narrative and environments. While the story is rather bland, the art design is very impressive and makes wandering around these locations a visual treat. There are some moments where the lighting can be a hindrance though. This game is very dark in quite a lot of places, and that can make certain things unnecessarily unclear. Like trying to find an item to pick up, or being able to simply see the way forward in a section that requires you run away from some hazard in the handful of chase sequences that occur from time to time. This game has pretentions towards horror as well, which explains why it's so dark a lot of the time. But like most other things the game does, it doesn't amount to much. It's basically those chases, a bit of gore, and the occasional cheap jumpscare that usually doesn't land.

It has some really bad issues with audio balancing too, particularly with dialogue. A lot of it is very quiet, while other lines are extremely loud, often with peaking audio. There doesn't seem to be any logic to what lines are loud or quite though. It doesn't have anything to do with whether the character is raising their voice or not. It leads to having to constantly adjust the volume of the game, but never being able to find a good balance. It seems to be particularly bad with one character who talks in your ear across a lot of the game. This character also happens to have mis-matched voice acting too. Their accent doesn't line up with the way they speak at all. It's a bit distracting.

So it's a lot of missed opportunities overall. There's a lot of stuff that could be mined out of this premise which could result in something pretty cool, but this game doesn't seem very interested in most of that. It is very pretty at least.

9. Tinykin
A very fun platformer and collectathon. For what it is aiming to do, it pretty much nails everything but I couldn't personally class it as a GOTY contender as I have seen other people feel it is deserving of, just purely because I like my games to have a bit more challenge to them. It was however a great game to chill out with in the evening whilst watching TV and going around hoovering up the tinykin and pollen was very satisfying. One minor complaint was that it was sometimes a pain having to wait for the Tinkykin to move objects around the room as they were quite slow and often had to do quite long distances carrying said object. 7.5/10

Another game that I felt like I should try out for many years now. Only partially prompted by the recent news of the series making a comeback. I actually started this a little while before those announcements.

But I didn't really connect with this one unfortunately. Wasn't really scary, couldn't get in to the atmosphere, story wasn't that engaging, and it was a chore to play. I'm kind of disappointed, I was hoping to like this. Although I find it pretty hard to get in to horror games in general, so I suppose it's not a huge surprise. But when I hear people talk about these games, they always sound great, and I really want to enjoy what other people do in them.

I'm still willing to give the sequel a chance at some point though. This one may have been a miss, but SH2 has such a glowing reputation that maybe it'll work better for me. And hopefully the generational leap can help iron out some of the issues I had.

I dunno, it's just a brilliant game isn't it. Hasn't diluted at all in the decade since I first finished it. Loved it from start to finish. And played the DLC for the first time, too. Cracking fight with Artorias, but that Manus was a twat. Gwyn was a bit of an anticlimax after beating him first time (he took me ages first time I played the game), but all in all, it's still an all time classic. Might re-listen to the C&R show now.

I really do like the urban side scrolling brawler. This is a very good one but as it has a levelling up system the moveset can feel quite limited at the start and grabs aren't as common as in other games.

Sep 22 - Splatoon 3 (Switch)
People don't play Splatoon for the single player, do they? It is an improvement from the second game's campaign though.

Still like the multiplayer, but I haven't settled on a weapon set yet. Splatfests aren't as good now as they've dropped the one-off experimental Shifty Station stages for an unbalanced and less interesting 4v2v2 battle mode. (Unbalanced against the 4 interestingly enough, and yes I was on teams Scissors and Fun why do you ask? ;) )
Nothing new here for people who were looking for anything new.

Oct 29 - Pirate Ship Higemaru (MAME emulation on Steam Deck)
Ben (aka One Credit Classics) runs a monthly contest for his Patreon subscribers, usually a high score challenge. I play each game as its a nice incentive to play old games that I haven't played before. If I like it I stick with it for the month.

Higemaru is a 1984 arcade game by Capcom that looks a bit like Bomberman but the inner walls are made of barrels that can be picked up and thrown at the pirates until the screen has been cleared of them. Its a nice little fun game. There are 16 different levels (or decks) and then it loops decks 9-16 repeatedly. I cleared deck 16 on one credit so I'm saying this one is done. If anyone does end up playing this look up the locations of the secret items they ramp up the score and the game gives an extra life every 50,000 points.

This is probably the oldest game I've completed.

October 31st - Devil May Cry 5 SE

My first proper delve into the ‘character action’ subgenre. There’s some nice features for beginners like a training arena called ‘the void’, detailed lists of moves and even a bunch of backstory profiles and stuff. I found that very useful and would fire up the void every time I needed to refresh my memory.

I played on the ‘human’ difficulty recommended for beginners, which was very forgiving and helped me bumble through and get to grips with things. It was fun but a bit unsatisfying, especially at the end when the last few bosses are going crazy and I’m panic running and swiping my way through. Almost feels like there’s an audience watching you with a disappointed look on their face every time you get knocked out of a combo. But it was a lot of fun and gave me the urge to read some tips and try it again on the next difficulty level, get better and have more challenging fights. I really liked the characters, who looked amazing on the PS5 special edition. The tone is very fun and lighthearted, which suits the mad action and monsters. The music’s great too, thumping rock and electronic music that made every fight a blast, along with the odd more grandiose track for the story moments.

Of the characters I enjoyed playing as Dante the most. The amount of options he has is crazy, I only really used a few weapons and stuck to the sword master style. Nero was fun too, I loved the devil arms and revving up the ex gauge, despite it often dropping my combo. The megaman arm which has him do the jump was a nice touch. V I found surprisingly hard, people often say he’s the easiest but not for me. I think I struggled splitting my attention. They were all a lot of fun though and I’m looking forward to having another run through with them.

Three hours of perfect Halloween fun. Really excellent stuff, couple of bad boss fights but the puzzling and exploration is top tier in the series and it’s spookier than the main game imo. Can confirm the Beneviento House is even better in this revisit than in the main game. Much more fully formed as a concept and super scary.

Rose’s adventure through the mutamycete realm has some of the most purely out their imagery in the whole series, really maximalist and drawing from the aesthetic of Devil May Cry 5 in parts. The story also has a bit of Stephen King to it as well which seems a good fit for Resi.

They didn’t have a lot of time or budget and that’s clear to see, but the creativity is off the scale with what they’ve done with these revisited environments and just a few extra character models.

Like everything this team does at the moment it just makes me more excited for what comes next. I’d play one of these 3-4hr adventures every three months if they put them out.

#12 - Angry Alligator (PS4)

Man oh man, been a long time since I posted on here. I ran to be a City Councillor here in London (not that one), and finished in a strong second. I suffered from a "progressive" vote split, as two other candidates with very similar platforms to mine also ran strong campaigns. Alas.

Anyway, Angry Alligator. This game is awful, but I love it. It's basically Maneater, but incredibly simplified. And honestly... That makes it the better game for me?

It's really quite bizarre. This is very obviously a low-budget game, presumably ported from mobile, but I enjoyed it enough to complete it. It's the same core concept as Maneater - you go around chomping everything that moves and get revenge on invasive humans. But because it's not bogged down with overly complex systems and a bloated map, it does what it needs to do and the end result is a "turn off your brain and be an alligator" experience.

Like make no mistake. This game is bargain basement garbage. Two of the trophies are bugged and do not work. Climbing on to the shore from the water is a hassle because the collision on the ground is wonky and it won't let you climb even gentle inclines. All the music and sound effects (and probably graphic assets) are stock. It has arbitrary level gates that require brainless grinding to overcome, especially at the end.

But what other game lets you trundle around as an alligator? What other game has a gator shaman called Wisecroc? What other game has a final boss named Alli G? None, I tell you. And this game is special, and stupid, and I had a good time. And for the $20 MSRP, honestly, if you just want a shitty mobile port where you play an alligator, your options are limited.

#13 - Telltale's Batman (XB1)

Oh, I forgot about this one. And that's not an accident. This game is thoroughly forgettable. Like, it's not bad. The story is pretty neat, actually. But "Telltale's Batman" tells you literally everything you need to know.

I love their take on The Joker though. I had the sequel on my backlog, so I'm hoping that one delivers something a wee bit more memorable.

1 October: Castlevania: Vampire Killler (Mega Drive on Switch)
2 October: Castlevania: The New Generation (Mega Drive Mini)
2 October: Castlevania: Bloodlines (Genesis on Switch)
9 October: Resident Evil Village (Xbox Series X)
21 October: Harmful Park (PS1)
30 October: Deathsmiles - Normal Mode (Switch)

My annual Castlevania clear turned out to be Bloodlines on Genesis this time, as well as Vampire Killer, the Japanese version and The New Generation PAL version on the Mega Drive. Not my favourite but clearly still a good time! Far more frequent than annual for Resident Evil Village so far and it gets more beautiful every time. Harmful Park was another real beauty of a cute ‘em up that I really clicked with, but if you’re shooting stuff then Deathsmiles always wins out for me, especially just in time for Halloween.

23rd Jan - God of War (PS4)
10th Feb - Forza Horizon 5 (Xbox Series S)
11th Feb - Starfox 64 (Nintendo Switch)
14th Feb - Sunset Overdrive (Xbox Series S)
16th Feb - Superliminal (Xbox Series S)
12th Jun - Elden Ring (Xbox Series S)
23rd June - TMNT: Shredder's Revenge (Xbox Series S)
11th July - Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Xbox Series S)
9th Sept - Hitman 3 + DLC (Xbox Series S)
21st Sept - Immortality (Xbox Series S)
10th October - Neon White (Nintendo Switch)
17th October - Return to Monkey Island (Nintendo Switch)

5th November - Hitman (Xbox Series S)

So that's all 3 beaten now. This one is pretty staggering given its age compared to the others, and they came right out of the gate with a couple of the best levels in the series. Not much to add that I haven't said in posts about 2 and 3 before. It's such a clever series and it makes me very excited for what they do with the Bond license.

I'd say in terms of preference, that 2 > 1 > 3 but that they're all very good, and taken as an entire entity, represent incredible (replay) value and some of the most original and interesting gaming moments I've had in years.

#14 - Jurassic Park: The Game (X360 via XB1)

Easy award for "most underrated Telltale game". I had an absolute blast with this game, and I genuinely do not understand why it has a reputation for being mediocre.

What I got was an interactive action movie with a great story, interesting characters, great action set pieces, and a game that respects the source material while doing its own thing.

I mentioned in the "What We Playin'?" thread that I believe this to be the best Jurassic Park movie after the original, and that absolutely holds true. It takes place both during and after the original movie - it starts immediately after the demise of Denis Nedry, and finishes a day or two after the film, chronicling the events of a few stragglers left on the island for one reason or another. It does sag a bit in the middle at times, but episodes 2 and 3 appear to have had different writers. Episode 4, however, does a great job of cleaning up some of the missteps with satisfying resolutions to cap it all off.

To be clear though: This is absolutely an interactive movie. Action scenes are resolved with QTEs, and dialogue, puzzles and searching for clues comprise the rest. The puzzles ranged from passable to excellent, and the ways they both involved dinosaurs and quirks of the park was great fun. The QTE segments were hit and miss - they did a great job of keeping me on my toes, but they were marred by a handful of technical hiccups. If you've played Telltale games before, you will know how these games sometimes drop inputs when the game is lagging, and this was no exception. I suffered a handful of cheap deaths because the game did not register my inputs. Annoying, but not enough to marr the experience overall for me. However, there IS an achievement for a deathless run, and I can imagine those technical issues driving an achievement hunter up the freaking wall. There was also one QTE where no symbol displayed at all, and while that was not a death check, it was odd.

I can recommend this to a lot of people, but not everyone. If you're a John Carmack and mechanics are everything for you, you might want to watch an LP of this one instead. But if you're a fan of games with great stories and you can overlook other blemishes, or if you're a big fan of Jurassic Park or dinosaurs, I give this one a hearty recommendation.

This is also a game I've noticed start to creep up in price in the last few years, so if you're wanting it physical, I would pick up a 360 copy before the used games market goes bananas again.

Not really sure what to count as “completed” for this game. This is the highest rank you can reach and I’ve beaten every Grand Prix at each rank. But that doesn’t require anything in particular to achieve, there’s no singular special event you need to win to finish the game, and there’s no credits at this stage either. The only other major milestone left is going for 100%, which I am definitely not doing. So I guess I’ll call this done.

What a blast this was. They don’t make them like this any more. A really amazing game that mostly stands up today. They took a series that was already firing on all cylinders and took it a step further. That’s kind of a double-edged sword though. It makes for an experience that is an absolute joy in excess and adrenaline, but at times can also feel like it over-eggs the pudding a bit, occasionally leading to some rough edges where things break down a little. It’s kind of like Doom Eternal in that way. Takes a formula that was already brilliant, and doubles down, creating heights even higher than before, but also some awkward moments where things don’t go so smoothly.

The feeling of racing in this game is incredible. It grabs hold of you and absorbs your focus, holding it with a vice-like grip. It’s an intense rush like little else, and a visceral experience, at the risk of invoking an old cliché. The sense of speed is one of the best ever realised in a game. Aside from good use of the usual techniques, the audio and visual effects like sparks flying and camera shake take it to another level. There’s a violence to it as well, with the feeling of smashing these metal hunks together at high speeds that sells the sense of aggression and danger. And the chaos of takedowns and crashes adds a level of furious mayhem, making each race feel like just as much of a dirty brawl as a competition of skill and lightning reflexes. It’s an amazing thing to get your hands on.

I’m in two minds about the traffic check mechanic they added in this one though, but after some thought I think overall I like it. At first it does seem like taking the vehicular destruction perhaps a step too far in a way that pushes things a bit too much towards chaos and away from racing skill. Halving the amount of traffic you need to avoid, and having traffic basically become projectiles bouncing around everywhere at random. But thinking about how it works with all the other systems, I think it actually doesn’t hurt the game significantly, and adds some cool new tactical wrinkles too. Since you get boost points for hitting stuff, that gives you a reason to travel with the flow of traffic, so now it’s not just one side of the road that is always the correct choice. It does give you less boost than oncoming though, and slows you down slightly, so there’s a trade-off. But it also fixes a problem other games in the series have, where being in first means you don’t get to engage with the combative elements of the game. But punting traffic when you’re in the lead can be used as kind of a defensive option too, as cars can fall behind you and have a chance to take out chasing opponents. I still think there’s the argument to be made that this mechanic takes away from the formula of the previous games, but it doesn’t ruin the experience here either. Besides, if you wanted a version of this game without traffic checking, Burnout 3 already exists.

Track design in previous games was better though. It’s not exactly bad here, but it does have some elements I don’t like. On the good side, they all have a load of alternate routes and shortcuts. It’s almost too much, as you have to spend quite a lot of time not really knowing the best route through each track since there’s so many options. But it’s cool how a single one can vary so much even in the same layout. But unfortunately most of them aren’t very visually memorable. It can sometimes be hard to tell what part of a circuit you’re on as it looks identical to the rest of it. Many of them have a very similar aesthetic to them as well. This game was one of the early examples of when so many were going with the gritty brownish aesthetic. I’ve defended that look before in many games, and I’d even say it makes some sense with the tone of this game, but it ends up causing problems for gameplay here. A lot of tracks can be very hard to parse with them frequently being a bunch of similar brown hues. The track design also has this habit of having a lot of walls poking out at the least convenient spots for you to crash in to, and the colour palette doesn’t exactly help with that. It even makes me wonder how the hell I was even able to play this game back in the day on the PS2 with how low the original resolution was. One other neat little thing I noticed about the tracks isn’t really to do with them being good or bad though. But with several of them, you can spot sections that feel like they came right out of Burnout Paradise. They obviously re-used some environment ideas from this game and incorporated them in to that one.

Going back to the actual driving mechanics though, occasionally this game with have a little hiccup that can be slightly annoying too. Not enough to ruin the general experience, but it can ruin the odd race from time to time. Sometimes when you respawn from a crash or something like that, the game will point you towards a wall or in a situation where you can’t avoid crashing again. Or you might get in to an awkward spot while brawling with another car, that ends up with you clipping through the ground or suddenly facing backwards. It feels like with the sheer pace of this game and the amount of collisions it’s trying to keep on top of, sometimes that will break down and the things will freak out for a moment, in a way that other Burnout games don’t do. It’s not a huge deal, but annoying enough to mention. Another example of this game pushing things just a bit beyond what it can handle.

But despite all that, I still love this game. The positive qualities are so strong that it’s hard to hold anything else against it too hard. It’s raw, exhilarating, and breathlessly intense. Sometimes it trips over itself in trying too hard, but you have to admire a game that goes for that rather than something that plays it too safe. Now perhaps I might finally get to properly playing through Burnout Dominator.
