FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (& Women's World Cup 2023)

Post by Alex79 »

It's World Cup time again! Here are all the matches which I will attempt to keep updated with scores daily. The thread can also be used as a general World Cup talk thread.

I've highlighted the England and Wales matches. If there are any other teams people would like highlighted pleased just ask.

All information taken from the BBC website. There are occasions where it says, for example, ITV are broadcasting two matches at the same time. I am guessing they'll be using the additional channels for those.

Winners: Brazil
How far will England go: Quarters

I'm so out of touch with football I completely forgot this was coming lol. Nightmare scenario England lose to Wales and USA and get dumped out. More optimistic outlook, we could top the group, face the second place team in a fairly weak group A, then likely go out in the quarters to Argentina or France. It's hard to get excited though, winter world cup in Qatar doesn't feel right.

By the end of the Euros last year I was very excited for the World Cup, but given England's performance since then I'm really not feeling very optimistic at all.

Ok so my predictions...

England prediction: reach the semis, lose to Portugal.
World Cup winners: Argentina

I was going to try to predict places 1-4, but got lost with trying to work out who'd be playing who when.

Thoughts on the England squad? I think it's as I expected, pleased Maddison got included, whether he will play over Southgate's favourites is another matter.

My only complaint would be the lack of Tomori.

Pleased with a 6-2 win yesterday.

And what a shock for Argentina just now, a 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia!

A lot of low scoring, quite dull matches so far. I remember the last world cup being the most exciting I'd ever seen. This doesn't really compare so far, although it's early days I suppose!

That's interesting, but aside from goals per match I just remember the games in the last one being more exciting to watch - but I can't remember why. Perhaps it's as much to do with environmental/my own mood factors as anything else.

Another 0-0. Perhaps playing a major international tournament in the middle of a frenetic club season wasn't a great idea...

The fourth 0-0 of the tournament just concluded in the fourteenth game.
There was only one 0-0 result in the entire of the previous tournament.

Fun fact. This is the first world cup where there has been no goals from outside the box by this point in the tournament.
