The Irishman
Nicely paced, 3 and a half hours but it just slides along.
No big suprises, it's exactly what you'd expect, but that's no bad thing.
Feels like he could have done more with it though, the whole aging/redemption angle and he could have explored how it affected the other family members more. It didn't seem like enough in the end.
Three and a half bags.
Nah, fuck it, 4 bags. I can't dock it half a bag for not being what I think it could have been. It is what it is and it's good.

The Irishman

Good film overall, with a handful of great scenes and some interesting meta-commentary, but not the sort of stone-cold classic it draws so much inspiration from. A bit too long for its own good and there is only so much that CGI effects can do in terms of convincingly de-aging a bunch of septuagenarians (the body language uncanny valley is massive at times, unfortunately). I doubt I'll look back as fondly on this one as I do on the rest of Scorsese's gangster film portfolio. Time will tell.

Feels like a wasted opportunity, dunnit?
It felt like an opportunity to explore and go deeper and it just felt like a slowed down, inferior medley of his gangsta repertoire.

Maybe that was the point, these people are psychopaths, you're not gonna get much soul searching or desperate last minute grabs for salvation other than lazy token priest visits.

The other family members in the film are given exactly the amount airtime and lines as the protagonists think they deserve.

I felt myself actively detach my mind from the cgi stuff after 20 minutes or so. I just knew it would spoil the film for me if I paid any attention to it.
What the fuck was he thinking? Just put a pair of school shorts on the old duffers, it wouldn't have taken me twenty minutes to suspend my disbelief and I might have gotten a chuckle out of it.

I would have to agree with that, but I also want to underline how much I enjoyed certain elements. Pesci in particular is phenomenal, playing a much more posed and nuanced character than what he's known for. I also loved certain scenes, like the prison dialogue between Hoffa and Tony Pro.

But yeah. Goodfellas is a classic because of how well-rounded it is. Every scene matters, the pacing is great, the acting is unforgettable. The Irishman lacks this sort of polish and clarity, unfortunately.

EDIT: Oh, and the music! I saw it yesterday and it barely left any impression on me. Lots of re-use of the same basic tune, I thought.

Oh yeah, I enjoyed the crap out of it and though it's feeling a bit more pointless in the cold light of day, nothings gonna change that, I don't think.
Yeah, pesci was amazing!

I think I'm going to start this tonight. Much as I loathe the fact, it'll have to be watched over a couple of evenings.

I'm watching the Irishman this weekend. A friend wanted to see it theaters but the plan fell through, so I guess I'm Netflixing it.

The wife and I saw Frozen 2. I've cooled on the first one (HA) but she still loves it. I didn't like the sequel at all and she was very disappointed. One decent song but the whole movies feels like a traditional direct-to-dvd sequel made big. Bummer for people who cared, more of a time waste for those who don't.

Woodchip, woodchip, what a lovely icecream!

Don't know how much caneandrinse/consolevania audience crossover there is but the new episode was good.

The Amazing Johnathan Documentary
Probably spoilers, if you're planning on watching it.
Spoiler: show
It was fun seeing the twinkle in the guys eye as the fourth documentary crew turned up to document his death.
I wish his oncoming death was a hoax as it would have made the camera crews bickering over his deathbed a blinding satire on grief porn documentaries.
Regardless, he was right to hedge his bets, I'm assuming at least one of them must have made a half decent film.

The boring none entity prick of a director absolutely jumps at the chance to be in the spotlight and we even get footage of his drunk cunt mate talking bollocks and his stupid fucking fatha saying nothing of import and eating his bloody dinner like some old prick.
It's like the guy saw nathan for you and assumed it was a serious documentary and an interesting style he could emulate.

I went in blind, all I knew about the amazing jonathan was a very short clip, I watched my VHS of robocop to death as a nipper and I think he was part of the "also available on the shit for pricks video range" montage and I remember thinking "ooh, he looks exciting and fun" I was big into magic and comedy and it was before penn and teller, so it looked like something I'd be all over, I never chanced upon a vhs at a car booty, so that's where my knowledge began and ended.
Really weak.
2 bags of meth and they're for John, he gave them enough ingredients, none of it was his fault.
