So anyway, I'm hoping Southgate can manage better than he has done in the recent matches. Thought we've been terribly dull to watch, totally lacking any kind of drive. I think leaving Grealish at home was a mistake. I know he's not had a good season with City but I think he's one of those players who seems to be totally different when playing internationals. I think he's exciting to watch and enjoy seeing him run at opponents, more often than not drawing a foul. I'm not an expert, I know next to nothing really about the game, but I know who I like watching play, and I think Southgate has really made a poor decision here.

I think we're so stacked in that area of the pitch that I can understand him being dropped given his form, it wouldn't make sense I don't think to take him for just another attacking player when there are other players on his position who are currently playing better. I think the biggest mistake Southgate has made with his selection was not taking Braithwate from Everton. He lacks experience at international level but with Maguire out we're threadbare in defence now and he could also play left back if needed if Shaw isn't fit enough.

I'm not too concerned about recent performances tbh. Pre tournament friendlies they tend to be holding back for fear of injury and the team he played in both games wasn't full strength, he didn't even play Pickford. It's not the first time a team, not just England, have not performed well going into a tournament but then shown up for the big occassion.

Bit of a thrashing for Scotland last night, they never looked like they were any threat to the Germans to be honest. I did love the way the fans celebrated their lucky consolation goal, though!

Spain Vs Croatia is very interesting to watch so far. 3-0 to Spain at half time but Croatia have had plenty of chances, bit unlucky to be three down. Both teams playing exciting, attacking football.

England putting in a uninspiring performance last night, but a win is a win. Also only the second time we have won the opening game of the euros in our past 10 attempts which is something. I also have some optimism given that we tend to grow into tournaments under Southgate and whilst we didn't do much attacking wise, I think we limited Serbia to just a couple of chances which were long range shots, so for all the concern over our defence, at least we got a clean sheet.

Yeah, the first half hour was really promising and Saka and Bellingham in particular were really shining but in classic England form we just lost all interest before even the end of the first half. Really frustrating to watch. We could have put 3 or 4 past them but didn't.

We definitely got overcautious and made an easy victory look like hard work. Think we could've gone for a second and made it more comfortable. But a win's a win I guess.

I know it's Alan Shearer co-commentating on the BBC, but every now and then I'm picturing Cane and Rinse's own Karl Moon when he speaks. It's not all the time, but just occasionally it's uncanny.

Spain have won all six of their games in style as we have scraped through, drawing three on the way.

But, you know, football...

Come on, anything can happen! We looked good last night, at least for the first half. I'm not confident, but I don't think we are going to be a walkover. I know both teams want to win, but England want to win. Maybe that'll be enough... :D

I like that Alex's comment about it being painful to watch is still mostly true, despite reaching the final  I'll take it over noble defeat though. I do genuinely think we can do it too. Just feels like we could be the dark horse.

Ah well that's a bummer. We didn't do too bad, but both their goals the Spanish player was wide open on the left. Ah man.

Yeah, yet another oppurtunity missed. I admire Gareth for what he has managed to achieve in his time as manager given what came before. The best thing he has done has changed the culture in the dressing room where there no longer seems to be club cliques and each player seems to want to play for the international team (other than Ben White) and there's no sulkers in the group. However he has shown to be lacking in the tactics side of things when it has mattered and should be playing in a way that takes more advantage of our attacking talents. So I think it's time we moved on.

Agree with that entirely. It's a shame we weren't playing a bit more aggressively because everything else about him is spot on.

Yeah definitely agree with that. I don't feel the sense of fear and negativity clouding the team like it used to. Feels like we're able to get results even on a bad day. I think that's Southgate's influence, as well as a generational thing. We're still just lagging behind the best teams though. In both finals we lost it felt like the best side won. Which is better than throwing it away, but means we need to improve.
