So this is a game I've had in my Steam library for ages but never really got around to properly. Finally finished it off. It's a pretty cool little game. The central mechanic of manipulating the titular ball to solve puzzles is pretty simple, and the puzzle design itself never does anything massively unique, but it did manage to stay interesting throughout. They mix things up just enough to get some decent variation out of how you use those mechanics. Also the game is pretty old now, so maybe the design was more original back when it was new.
There is also combat in the game though, which gets pretty frequent towards the end, and it's horrible. Well, it's not exactly "combat" per se. You usually have to use the ball to solve a puzzle to get it to hit an enemy that is coming at you in a certain way. Or something similar. Problem is these enemies usually bat the ball around, making it a pain to control. They also often take a huge amount of health away with attacks that feel cheap and annoying as there isn't much feedback. So fighting enemies was just a drag that took away from the experience a little near the end.
I really liked the mood of the game though. It takes place in a series of underground caves and Aztec-like ruins. Despite the relatively modest production values, it managed to create a sense of wonder to it that's also kind of foreboding at times. It makes the environments really feel unfamiliar and untouched ruins full of mystery. Some areas area also quite impressive in how expansive they are.

Completed The Swapper on Wii U. Lovely little game. First time in an age where I had to use a walkthrough too to finish it. Two levels just utterly beat me after an hour of experimenting with them. Would heartily recommend it to all puzzle or sci-fi fans.

Never played a 2D Zelda. Would you guys recommend them or are they too random / hard / unplayable now?

God no, play A Link to the Past (SNES) on Wii U virtual console. A masterpiece in my opinion.
Failing that A Link Between Worlds on 3DS for a modern take on the same game.

Re: Games Completed 2015
Agreed, Link to the past is the epitome of a good Zelda game and indeed a good adventure game. I really loved a Link between worlds but did find it a tad on the easy side, that said I really wanted to get through it quick before playing MM so it worked out well in the end both however are excellent games in their own right and well worth playing.ratsoalbion wrote:God no, play A Link to the Past (SNES) on Wii U virtual console. Re: Games Completed 2015
Always wanted to play ALTTPast but was a bit put off by my friend saying he's no idea how he ever completed it, due to having to try random things, stand certain places and phone helplines back in the day to complete it! But having just mastered Super Metroid and loving the game, probably ought to try this one too (and Super Mario World, but I have 3 other great 2D platformers to beat first (Rayman Legends, NSMBWiiU and Bit trip runner 2))
Re: Games Completed 2015

So this game ended up being way, way bigger than I was expecting it to be. Steam says 10 hours, but it felt like it was easily more than double the size of the original. Maybe up to four times. I tried to do as much side stuff as possible, but there didn't seem like there was much non-critical stuff to do.
Anyway, it's a vast improvement over the first. The combat is made more responsive and deep. It's still relatively basic and kind of rough around around the edges in a general context, but it was more than enough to maintain enjoyment for the full game, for the most part. The RPG mechanics are a bit strangely done though. You upgrade your abilities by finding statues hidden in the world. There's no experience gains from winning fights or doing quests. So that's kind of odd, and somewhat undermines the central mechanics of the game.
I was consistently blown away by the art direction of the game though. It's so strange and imaginative, and there's such a wide variety of stuff there. As I've mentioned before, it's very dream-like, and a lot of areas look like you're exploring the art of a prog rock album cover. It's quite breathtaking in some spots. But everywhere there's something new and odd to find. It's really cool to look at. It's not bad on a technical level too, considering the small team that worked on it.
It makes me excited to see what Ace Team come up with in the future, with The Endless Cylinder in particular.

Re: Games Completed 2015
I revisited ALTTP a couple of years back, Sean, and it was every bit the game it was 20 years ago. Plenty of folks on here (or GameFAQs) to help if you do find yourself stuck, but I wouldn't worry.
Those photos you posted really got me interested in taking a look at Zeno Clash 2, Scrustle. Some amazing vistas and art design in there it seems!

Halo CE is a bit clunky, but there's still some great moments of level design and pacing. 'The Silent Cartographer' remains my favourite FPS level of all time. I'm clearly a better gamer now than I was when I first played it as I found the Library and the warthog run at the end pretty easy, when I clearly remember them being nightmarish the first time round.
Arkham Knight I've spoken about at length elsewhere. Suffice to say it's a good game, but it's not a great game.
Re: Games Completed 2015
Did you play Halo with the new graphics on? They put arrows in the floor in The Library, so it becomes pretty hard to get lost.
I've never really had a problem with finding my way around that level though, even in the original version. I do remember it dragging on a bit though, but that was more about pacing than getting lost. Although maybe that might have something to do with the fact that I always played the game co-op with other people at first. It was quite a while after that before I actually got my own copy.
I have to say I've always had some problems finding my way around the level where you first meet the Flood though. A lot of the rooms look very similar and it doesn't signpost itself very well. There's also a whole lot of backtracking in that level. I even had trouble with it in the MCC version.

Re: Games Completed 2015
From what I can remember from back in the day it was the difficulty rather than the level layout. It just seemed overly unfair to me back then. I think it's a combination of having played more Halo games since (and therefore knowing which weapon combinations work best against the flood) and the level being better lit (so you're not surprised by things seeming to spawn from nowhere, you can actually see where they're coming from).
It is definitely an over long level though. I'd say by about as much as 50% too long.
I did like the chapter title in Halo 2 when you enter Delta Halo's Library - "That old familiar feeling..."

First time I've put something here but I finally finished Witcher 3. Took me 169hrs! I did pretty much everything in that game. Only got a few achievements left. Best weeks worth of gaming in a very long time. Feel a little sad and lost now [PENSIVE FACE]

That isn't half as good as I remember it being. Some *very* frustrating sections in there. Especially the 'rumble pit' room at the end of the level 'Gravemind'. I remember that being tricky, but it's just downright broken. They replaced the licenced music with generic rawk, which doesn't help. I didn't much like the licensed stuff, but the replacements are utterly terrible.
Having all the cut scenes replaced with CG versions felt a little weird as well, it broke the levels up oddly. That transition from game to game engine cutscene it had originally flowed better.
Keith David utterly kills it as the Arbiter though doesn't he?
On to Halo 3 (and then probably ODST as it's only 4 quid... actually have to free some space on my hard drive now though... hmm...)
