Tiny bit concerned about this, though : http://kotaku.com/why-the-final-fantasy ... 1746598619

If it's actually going to be episodic, it's going to piss a lot of people off. People have been waiting and asking for years for this, why on earth would they mess with it!?

On the other hand, if the quote has been misunderstood and the game will be as one, but part of a series of games set in the universe, well that sounds ok. Needs clarification though. I'd certainly be disappointed with an episodic release.

Looking at the scale of FFVII and the costs involved with regular production plus graphics plus reproducing a game of that scale now,I wouldnt be surprised if the game was actually episodic, how would that work out for a RPG I have no idea the only thing I cant think of is that it would be like an MMO you would have the game story and areas until a certain point and then the next episode adds to it,I dont think it's good but that's the only realistic way I see it working, this would also get the games on people's hands alot earlier rather then making them wait until 2030 or whenever it would be done on Square-time. But given that Nintendo just released a new JRPG of a massive scale like Xenoblade Chronicles X I dont know if this is Square being realistic or greedy.

It worked for Mass Effect.

They should do it like that.

They were three relatively self contained stories though, not one big RPG. I don't see how it would work in FF7, would they lock areas off until the next episode, and once you'd started the next episode would you be able to return to old areas? I just can't see how they'd make that work at all.

I'd rewrite the story. Wouldn't be that hard to fit it into a standard five act structure. What it comes down to is, do you want the same game as before, or a new one. If they're doing the latter anyway, why not go all in?

So it seems that Steam database leak is partially true at least,Final Fantasy VI is coming to steam on the 16 of december but it seems to be some sort of DS remake or something does anyone knows if that version is any good Im kinda interested in it since I've failed to get very far in the PS1 version on the vita.

FFVI came to GBA but not DS...

I favour the Wii VC version which is the US 'FFIII' ROM.

Cool, thanks I wnet looking a bit more and it seems the PC version is gonna have new art which explains why I thought that was an DS remake or something similar,Im gonna wait to see if this pc version is any good before trying to replay the game but I'll probably take your suggestion because I dont find the art shown in the screenshots of the PC version to be all that good.

If it's based on the iOS version, run. Run far away. You're better off suffering through the loading times on the PS1 version than that...

[Edit]

Yup, that's the really awful iOS version alright.

Find the GBA one if you can, the PS1 version at a push.

Yeah I can't stand the iOS remake of the FF games. They just managed to lose all the charm with that horrible font they used for the text. I much prefer playing the PS1 versions on the Vita.

In other news :

Towerfall Ascension coming to Vita next week. Hurrah!

Yeah Im really wanting to give FFVI another try Im really torn between keep going with the PS1 version that I have on vita or if I should just emulate the GBA or original SNES version,I was hoping that the PC version was gonna be the superior option but that's clearly not the case

I've played the PS1 version on Vita, it's great. Easily the best of the options you've got. You don't have to suffer the disc load times of the PS1 original hardware.

Yeah, I did the same thing and didn't notice any load times at all. And FFVI is really good as a portable game.

Is it just me that thinks the FFVII remake looks absolutely ghastly?

I mean, if their goal was to surgically remove every single ounce of charm that the original had, then they have completely succeeded. Simply put, characters that are that outlandish and stylised (sporting crazy spiked hair and wielding foot-wide blades, for example) will always look laughably silly to me when rendered in a gritty, 'realistic' way. The much more cartoony way they were presented in the original - both the 'chibi' style characters and the more Anime-influenced feel of them in battle scenes - were so much more appropriate imo. It's honestly almost as incongruous and unappealing to me as Nintendo remaking Mario 64 with Mario proportioned like a real human being and giving the whole game a Gears of War style makeover.

FFVII was always a stunning looking game with fantastic character and location design that was held back by the capabilities of its host system - surely the majority of people would rather just have a straight-up HD remake of it rather than.... whatever this is?

Let's not jump to a conclusions. Its just one trailer, and it barely shows any gameplay. I didnt get "realistic" and "gritty" feel from it. I thought its more like Advent Children movie which was basically CGI Anime, in all its Ridiculousness.
Also I wouldnt want it to be straight-up HD version. There are a lot of outdated mechanics that i wouldnt like to deal with again (like random encounters   )

This is the problem Square have.

A lot of existing fans just want the original game with a HD polish.

To appeal to a wider audience than that (and therefore cover the development costs, which are sky high at the moment compared to 1997) they've chosen to completely reimagine it as a title with a more modern design philosophy (and also split it into multiple SKUs, because money).

I genuinely think if all they did was a straight HD art polish of the original game, it wouldn't sell enough to cover the costs of doing it. Building art to modern HD standards is by far the most expensive part of game development in 2015.
