17/11 - Gone Home (Console Edition) (Xbox One)
19/11 - LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (Xbox One)

Another LEGO game polished off. Weird to remember that there was a time, 10 years ago, when I'd go for 100% completion as a matter of course on these games. Looking at the number of side missions to complete, and characters to unlock, and main missions to replay... I find myself unwilling to grind through all of it. That said, I still love playing through the campaigns.

There are so many ways LMSH2 improves over its predecessor, and even over last year's LEGO Marvel's Avengers. Smoother gameplay, refinements to abilities (flying is massively improved), and a general level of joyful reverence for the Marvel universe (not just the films, it should be said.) Sadly though, the lack of X-Men and Fantastic Four characters doesn't just affect Marvel fighting games. Whereas leaving these characters out of LEGO Marvel's Avengers, based heavily on the Cinematic Universe as it was, makes perfect sense, Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Mr Fantastic, Dr Doom et al were a big part of LMSH. It stands out like a sore thumb that a game following on from that story so directly is suddenly without many of the main players. Alas!

I'm quite surprised - I had heard that this suffers from horrendous lag and bugginess. I was avoiding it in case it got patched. The first instalment is probably my favourite LEGO game so I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

I had a couple of crashes to dash, which certainly seemed out of character for a LEGO game. There seemed to be an issue with traversing the hub quickly and the game not being able to load in a transition fast enough (if I was to take a stab at backseat development ;) ), but it happened in only a couple of specific areas and resolved itself after a couple of tries. I certainly experienced no lag, but can't say whether that's a platform-specific thing, either to the Xbox One or the One X (that I was playing on).

I would certainly heed any warnings that you've heard elsewhere, though. It's possible I just got lucky.

Spoiler: show
Jan - Ratchet and Clank: Q-Force (PS3)
Feb - Life is Strange Episode 1 (Xbox One)
Mar - Deus Ex Go (Android)
Apr - Murdered: Soul Suspect (Xbox One)
Apr - Defense Grid 2 (Xbox One)
Apr - Opus: The search for Earth (Android)
Jun - Littlebigplanet 2 (PS3)
Jul - A World Of Keflings (Xbox 360)
it's been a bit of time but I have a couple more to add (and edited because I missed the first 'small' game in the list below ...)

Oct - Destiny 2 (Xbox One)
The main campaign at least. It looks lovely, plays great and overall is, well actually a bit meh.
The opening and closing missions are brilliantly crafted and there are some gorgeous visuals but the campaign quickly bogged down in the effort to unlock all the playable area's for endgame. There's a nice touch that some activities are not available to begin with so that there is time to get used to the game itself but it feels like that the area's accessible don't seem to be fleshed out quite as much as they could have been.
The lore seems, to me, to be downgraded in importance - I really wish that there was a grimoire library somewhere in game. It's nice that you can find snippets within the levels (and your ghost will actually face them when nearby to help find them) but there isn't any repository of this information. The vault storage is as useless as it was Destiny 1.
The game is certainly good, but not superb - definitely better with friends. It just feels like Bungie haven't quite taken all the opportunites that they could have.
For someone who came to Destiny late (only played when Rise Of Iron was released) I wonder if we again have the instance where it's going to take a year or so to really get the game together - something that seems to be the state of play for the AAA titles these days

Oct - Tales From The Borderlands Episode 1 (Xbox One)
I really enjoyed this - fleshes out Pandora nicely (like Mad Max through the eyes of Terry Prachett/Robert Rankin). All five episodes are currently available as part of Games With Gold through November so I'm looking forward to working my way through the rest and probably talk about a little more after that point

Nov - Ghost Recon Wildlands (xbox One)
Now this may be a little controversial but I had a lot of fun with this game also. I found It's take on open-world exploration to work very well in that you get involved as little or as much as needed. I took the time to collect all the weapons, legends and all story missions and left a large chunk of the rebel support missions alone and was able to have a very cohesive narrative experience. The drop-in co-op experience works very well and allows for members of a group to have different difficulties whilst still playing at the same time - friends infiltrating an underground base whilst (only after the alarm was raised) I grab an attack helicopter and start bombing runs to keep the enemy distracted.
A lot of the faults (helicopter controls) have been patched out since release though the vehicle handling is still a little bouncy - which they kind of embrace in the Nacro Road DLC with monster trucks!
it does have somewhat of a bombastic/imperialist tone for sure, which can be a little grating but then this is set in the Tom Clancy universe and I can perfectly see the CIA sending in a spec ops team as a response to an embassy bombing.

I like that the customisation level is left up to the player - you can have it on a light-hearted 3rd person shooter with all the aids, or you can switch off all the HUD and go for what I'm told is a more genuine Ghost Recon experience - we've recently been playing with the HUD entirely disabled with the aim of trekking from one checkpoint to another, no drone and no use of the map outside of the rebel checkpoints which makes for a totally different game, particularly with the Tier One difficulty pack active.

I also like the seasonal challenges where the devs can build on local legends or community requests (much improved now that they last for a few weeks rather than the few days when first introduced) and there is now a class-based PvP mode for those looking for squad based death match.

Not perfect by any means but it's telling that this game is probably the one that has appeared quite often on my xbox feed/youtube channel for photo shoots (that I must remember to disable the HUD for ...) and short action clips.

24/11 - Dishonored: Death Of The Outsider (Xbox One)

Well, I'll be! Who'da thunk that one of the most interesting characters from the Dishonored [sic] universe would make for a great protagonist?

Going back to the first game (earlier this year), I was reminded that the world held far more interest than the original story, for me. I thought the sequel made more of its characters, but I really think that the three smaller campaigns (Knife Of Dunwall, Brigmore Witches, and Death Of The Outsider) have better focused and condensed their narrative into a more satisfying whole. The same goes for character progression; I quite like experimenting to see what I can do with a fixed set of abilities. Experimentation isn't so appealing when doing so requires investment to unlock an ability that may not be so useful as upgrading something I already have.

A hearty recommendation, then, and a heck of a year for Arkane, and Bethesda. If only the sales figures would reflect that.

I hope we see more Dishonored, and, on the strength of Death Of The Outsider, I hope we see much more of Billie Lurk.

I went back to Death Of The Outsider for its 'Original Game +' mode. Quite ingenious, really; it lets you play through the campaign again, at whichever difficulty you like, with a different set of abilities.

In place of Foresight, Semblance, and Displace, you have Dark Vision, Domino, and (you guessed it) Blink. Same story, same missions, same Billie, but a combination of Corvo and Emily abilities did force me to create new solutions and paths. Soooo, I replayed it and nabbed the last few achievements in the so doing. :P

As predicted, by Leon, and likely anyone who knows my taste in games, this was right up my alley. Exploring a space, especially an intimate one like a home, to uncover its histories, especially personal ones, is one of the things that I love about narrative in video games.

WROEF, as no one is calling it, took that even further by tying the mechanics of each character's story to their personality. While that could have lifted me out of the space being explored, I thought it was an inspired choice, which lent itself to the kind of tragi-comic sense of humour that the game exuded.

One of my favourites of 2017, without a doubt.

From what you've played do you like Dishonored 2 or Prey better?

Really looking forward to playing that at some point. Did you enjoy Gone Home, James? I've had mixed luck with those story based exploration games. Loved Gone Home and Rapture, didn't like Firewatch and left Dear Esther barely played (although I do need to restart and play that to completion when I get round to it).

EDIT: I am here and now coining the phrase, SBEEUPs (story based explore 'em ups). Watch it gradually creep in to everyday use. You heard it here first.

There’s a good thread on here somewhere where we talk about Firewatch and why it left some people cold. Worth digging out.

I also played What Remains of Edith Finch last month. There need to be more games like this that affect the players, beyond a feedback loop of loot and sound effects. Love the rubber ducks and that scene everyone talks about. I do feel the actual conclusion for Edith lacked some gravity though.

Finished the remaster of Halo 2 last night (working my way through the collection) since rejoining the Xbox family this summer. My feelings about this have not changed too much since it's original release. There are balancing issues with the weapons and the first signs of the vehicle combat up-ending the tactical gun play in the franchise. But I love the energy for want of a better description - the level design is fun and the addition of the Arbitor is a lot more welcome now than it was at game launch. It is a shame Halo 2 could not have been finished as originally planned. There is a two-thirds of an epic feel to proceedings.

I love stories / games with multiple protagonists and I always thought that the inclusion of the Arbiter was one of the strongest aspects of Halo 2. Never understood the complaints.

Keith David is the man

One of a very small number of people to play themselves in a video game (Saints Row 4)

He may be a lot more famous for his film and television work than for being a voice actor, but the gravitas he brought to Thel is definitely one of the elements that made me appreciate the character so much. Great performance.
