The C&R MAME Tournament - ROUND 2 (Finished)

Spy Hunter

This weeks game is the legendary Spy Hunter, as chosen by Roy42. I must admit that whilst I'm aware of this game, I've never played it myself so I had to do a bit of reading up on the game before testing it! Very simply put, the game is a vertical top-down driving game, in which the player must destroy baddies cars whilst keeping their own armed sports car intact.
Wikipedia wrote:Spy Hunter is an vertical scrolling action/driving game with the player in the role of a spy driving an armed sportscar. The object of the game is to travel the freeway destroying as many enemy vehicles as possible while protecting civilian vehicles. The game uses top-down perspective.
The game begins with the player driving the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor. Various enemy vehicles try to destroy the player's car or to force it off the road, including a helicopter that drops bombs that can also leaves holes in the road. A counter increments the score while the car is moving. Additional points are earned destroying enemy vehicles using weapons or by forcing them off the road. After an initial lead-in time during which the player has an unlimited supply of cars, the player must earn extra cars by obtaining high scores. Destroying non-enemy cars halts the score counter for a short while and hard collisions with cars can also destroy the player's vehicle.

Following periodic forks in the road, players can enter a new 'territory' with different terrain and/or weather conditions. Players can also upgrade the car's standard machine guns by adding other weapons by enterting the Weapons Van, which appears in each new territory and can be periodically summoned by pressing the blinking "Weapons Van" button. Three special weapons are available: oil slicks, smoke screens, and surface-to-air missiles. Each has limited ammo and are lost if the player's car is destroyed. The game's dashboard shows which weapons are available, when lit.
It is possible for the player to convert the car into a cigarette boat for brief periods by driving through a special boathouse which appears infrequently at the side of the road after which the player is attacked by two different enemy boats.

INSTRUCTIONS

Ok, so first you need to download the ROM from here : http://upload.drarok.com/files/download ... pyhunt.zip

Then copy that file in to the 'roms' directory in your MAME folder. Then start the MAME app.

First of all remember to audit all games (file>Audit All Games), and then you're ready to play!

Basically, destroy enemy cars, don't shoot civvy cars. These two instruction screens are accessed by pressing the accelerator pedal :

CONTROLS & RULES

Ok, so Roy has chosen the most complicated game to control on MAME I've ever encountered, haha. If you're using a pad you should be able to reconfig the controls to a usable level, but it's a bit of a nightmare on keys. I would highly recommend hitting TAB when you're in the game and reconfiguring the controls however you want them. (TAB>INPUT THIS GAME) It seems like you only really use the machine gun weapon anyway, I've not managed to unlock/buy any of the others.

Usually in MAME pressing 5 inserts coin and 1 starts the game. In Spy Hunter, pressing 5 adds coin as usual, but to start the game you need to press whatever button you assign to the 'weapon truck'.

So, as usual, one credit, highest score wins. When you start the game, a timer will run down (top centre of screen). During this time, you have infinite cars. Once it runs out, you don't...

I don't know whether this game actually has a high score table or that I just didn't get a score high enough to put my name in when I was testing the game, but just in case - make sure you take a screen shot as soon as you see the GAME OVER words flash on screen. Your score is in the top right corner.

I think that should be everything. As usual highest score get 5 points, next highest 3 points and third place 1 point. Would be awesome to have some more entries this week. If anyone gets stuck, give me a shout, it's a particularly complicated one this week as far as MAME goes.

GO GO GO!

Here's my first submission to start us off. An abysmal effort! 8865 points.

Controls aren't actually that much of a nightmare as I thought. You don't end up using half the buttons anyway.

Classic game, good choice.
It isn't the best on MAME though, the original coin-op had the following inputs: full analogue steering yoke, analogue accelerator pedal, machine gun triggers, special weapons button and hi/lo gear shift stick. Obviously you can map everything onto a contemporary controller (better than you could when digital controllers were more prolific), but it never plays the same to be honest.

Another exceptionally difficult game too

You do if you want to get a half-decent score ;)
The game does have a small high-score table by the way.

Nowhere near Mike's score, but marginally better than my previous effort! I think I'm going to have to actually plug a gamepad in at some point, lol.

Hopefully some more entries coming in soon? Right guys? Guys.....?

Tried a few more goes, but I'm hopeless at this game! I give up lol. Hopefully next weeks game will prove a little more forgiving (and popular!?)

This one's not the easiest to play on mame. A bit frustrating too.

You know what sucks? Getting a 'Gave Over' because an enemy car turns up at the bottom of the screen and destroys you just as you re-join the road from a crash.

You know what really sucks? Getting the above 5 or 6 times in a 30 minute session.

Yeah I couldn't work out how to beat those cars with the spiky wheels. They killed me every time. I'm hoping for a game like R-Type or Ghosts N' Goblins next week :D

Just gear shift up to outrun them for long enough to get an oil slick or smoke screen.

I barely came across the weapons (or didn't know which button to press) but there's a little trick with the shifting when you see around 3 cars on screen and you can judge what seems like random traffic if you shift down a few seconds later (presumably before the game throws your pursuers out of memory as you most certainly hit something random), it won't stop the hitman who's a bit too quick for my liking but that gap between 15000 and 30000 becomes so much easier.

If you have a 360 or PS3 controller, it's a lot easier to map buttons. And that's what I was getting at with shifting up; you can get a small burst of speed to get them away from you without hitting anything, but it's risky, and preferable if you've got a weapon to use it.

And at 50K, you should've come across a couple of the weapon trucks. They're ridiculously useful. Touching oil slick causes any car to crash, and smoke screen will just clear anyone behind you non-lethally. Missiles are for helicopters.

Anyway, there's my score; don't see me getting much higher than that, because the icy roads are absolute killers. And I have no idea how to get the high score table to show up on it.

I have a feeling that back in the day I used to be able to top 100k but there's no way I've got time to try to get near that now, as much as I'd love to.

Please keep this going though guys, I'll do my best to join in when play-load allows!

Ok guys, deadline for entries is 8pm. I'm out till later anyway so I won't be able to get a new thread up for a while. Once 8pm has gone we'll have a winner, and if that winner would like to PM me their choice of game for next week that would be cool.

My bluffs been called and that was the highest score I could come away with (managed a few near 30,000's but nothing more). Still, it was worth a shot and despite never playing this back then I quite enjoyed it!

Ok this weeks results!

THIS WEEKS WINNER - ROY42!

1st - Roy42 85235 (5 points)
2nd - mikeleddy83 51395 (3 points)
3rd - Craymen Edge 27775 (1 point)

Which means the leader board is now as follows :

1st - Roy42 - 8 points
2nd - Alex79uk - 5 points
3rd - mikeleddy83 - 3 points
4th - Craymen Edge - 2 points

Thanks to all who played! Roy42 was our winner this week, but as per last week the game choice will pass down to mikeleddy83 so we don't have the same picker two weeks running.

Mike, if you can PM me your choice for next weeks game (just need the title, I can sort out the rest) I'll get the round 3 thread up!
