The C&R MAME Tournament - ROUND 4 (Finished)

Post by Alex79 »

Apologies for the delay, but on to week four...!

Jackal

Image

Chosen by ratsoalbion, Jackal is not a game I've personally played before. From the screenshots it looks like a variant on the arcade classic, Commando, but in a jeep.
Wikipedia wrote:Jackal, released in North America for the arcades as Top Gunner, is an overhead run and gun arcade game released by Konami in 1986.

The Jackal squad, a four-man team composed of Colonel Decker, Lieutenant Bob, Sergeant Quint and Corporal Grey, is sent to rescue soldiers kept as hostages by the enemy. One or two players control the teams in an armed jeep, which must venture through several enemy strongholds to rescue comrades imprisoned by the enemy. In each of the six levels, the goal is to rescue POWs from various buildings and then transfer them to helicopter dust-off locations. Once the soldiers are secure, the player(s) must then proceed to defeat the boss at the end of each level. In the last level, there are two bosses that must be defeated.
As with most run and gun games, there is a point system that can grant the player extra lives depending on the score attained. If a collision occurs with an enemy vehicle or the jeep is hit by an enemy bullet, a life will be lost. Some buildings contain one flashing prisoner; if this man is rescued, the jeep's primary weapon will be upgraded. In addition, if enough prisoners are rescued, a weapon upgrade will be yielded during the unloading process to the rescue helicopter. The Jeep's initial weapons consist of a machine gun and a grenade launcher. The grenade launcher can be upgraded into a rocket launcher, which can be further upgraded to shoot long-range missiles, and two kinds of spread missiles.

INSTRUCTIONS

You know the drill by now. Download from here : http://upload.drarok.com/uploads/21317-jackal.zip

Drop in roms directory, audit all games. If you need more detailed instructions check out week one of the MAME tournament for more info.

Controls seem to be arrow keys to move, then whatever you assign to button 1 is shoot, button 2 grenade. (Sorry, I seem to have reassigned my keys and cannot revert to default to tell you it's CTRL to shoot, [space] for grenade whatever, but check your own settings with the tab button).

Same rules as ever. 1 credit, highest score wins! (Screenshot with F12).

Enjoy!

Ok, quick first play. Seems like great fun. An embarrassing 5100 to start us off then...

Not sure why but MAME wasn't picking up that ROM for me. Grabbed it from elsewhere. Fun game!

That's weird. Did you download the build of MAME I linked to in the first week, because it does make a different which romsets work with each build etc. But no worries if you managed to get it working anyway.

Yeah, both are directly from those links. It's odd, it wasn't like the ROM was broken, the program wasn't seeing it there at all, zipped or unzipped.

Here's my meagre effort so far

The game's quite different to what I was expecting. Really enjoying it :D

ImageHere is my mighty score

I too had an issue with the rom, but solved it by renaming the file and taking the numerical digits off the front of it.

Ah ok, I didn't realise the upload site was adding numbers. It's a mates upload site and he changed it so downloaded files didn't have the numbers on which are added when uploading to avoid duplicate filenames. The numbers shouldn't be there I think, if you do get them make sure you delete them before trying to use the ROM yeah.

Well I barely improved my score at all, despite having a good few goes. Ended up in that spot where getting better at the game just made me take more risks and got me killed. Muppet.

We started quite late this week so we'll say the deadline is 7pm tomorrow. Shall we say we'll do maybe 8 rounds and have a break? Each tournament 8 rounds long with a few weeks in between?

I was improving my score each time I played, which is always satisfying, but also annoying if you left it as late as I have. So far the most enjoyable game in the tournament.

It's been having weird glitches for me that I unfortunately haven't had the time to sort through. Looks like I'll have to skip out on this week as well.

Gave it one more go this morning and improved my score again

I liked this game a lot, despite having a bit of difficulty getting rockets/grenades to go the direction I wanted them to first time.

I need to do more of them or I'm gonna let my place on the leaderboard slip. Not sure why that matters, but I'm sure it does.

Sorry guys, a bit late again. I guess it doesn't matter, in the words of Gabe Newell 'it's done when it's done' lol.

I'll sort it out tomorrow. Haven't even checked who's won yet! (But if the winner, or second place person if it's Ratso again would like to PM me with a game for this week I'll sort it out when I get home).

:)
