Black Myth: Wukong

Post by JaySevenZero »

I'm sure there's gonna be a fair amount of chatter around this reveal as the prominent Western sites get wind of it.

Kotaku Australia described it with the following;

"Black Myth is basically a Chinese studio’s crack at a AAA Dark Souls inspired action-adventure, laced with all the Chinese martial arts, monsters and mysticism you’d expect from the name."

I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying it looks really fucking good!

Wow, that's really impressive. It's pretty interesting to see this recent surge in Chinese games showing up. They've gradually been getting better over time, and the future looks very promising.

I'm not entirely sure the Dark Souls comparison is the best comparison though. The pace seems too fast for that, and it didn't appear there was any stamina mechanic. Maybe Sekiro is a better comparison. You could even call some parts of that musou.

Saw this doing the rounds on Twitter and it looks great - will definitely be keeping an eye on it!

Will be really interesting to see how the Chinese game dev scene develops over the coming years. It's huge already and there are studios popping up all over the place, but while some are working as support devs on big games already, a lot of the output doesn't make it over to western markets at the moment.

I wonder who will be the first one to really break through and become a big brand AAA studio in the west in their own right. Game Science are certainly making an impression with this game that's for sure!

Just from what they've showed already it looks amazing. They definitely have the art style and graphics down pat, and the gameplay looks right up my alley. I just hope that the story is engaging, i know of 'Journey to the West' but i dont think ive experienced the story in any kind of medium. This looks like it might be taking place before that particular story.

So far, everything Game Science have shown regarding their game has been kinda awesome and this latest video impressed me even more than their last.

Yeah, had my eye on this for a while and it's looking better and better the more I see of it.

Will def be checking it out as it continues development. I love the way you can use the stick to perch atop it like a pole and then slam the whole thing down on your enemy, extended and all for huge reach. I wonder if it will use a kind of unlocking tree or something. Will be interesting to see some of the other mechanics like progression and stuff.

I'd forgotten about this after being initially impressed, glad to see it's still looking pretty brilliant!

And we finally have a release date (as much as that's worth these days) of August 24th 2024. Hoping that this delivers the gameplay on top of the superb visuals and creature designs.

This looks incredible, graphically. Hope the gameplay backs it up (seems like it will). Definitely looking forward to this one.

Have you played the Souls/Bloodborne games, Jay? I know you've spoken a lot about various Souls adjacent games, but not sure I've ever heard you talk about the From games (other than Elden).

Yeah, some, Demon's Souls (both versions), Dark Souls, Bloodborne and of course, Elden. I have Dark Souls 2 but haven't got it in me anymore as it looks like ass these days and I skipped Sekiro as it didn't allow grinding. I have to say though, I'm probably just as big a fan of the Team Ninja titles, the two Nioh games and the more recent Wo Long as I am of FromSoftware.

Cant believe no ones been talking about this game on here, its absolutely awesome. Looks beautiful, superb audio & soundtrack, plays as smooth as butter, extremely satisfying deep combat system, fantastic story, well over a hundred different types of enemies, so many secrets to find, no microtransaction bullshit anywhere. Just a fucking kick ass single player game that ive put 30hrs into this week & im roughly only halfway through the game.
All i want to do is play it when i have the time, havent had a game like this grip me so hard since Bloodborne. It doesnt hold your hand, no map, just use your memory, its not as punishing as souls games, theres no real loss when you die so experimentation & exploration is welcomed and you can re-spec at shrines if a certain build isnt working with your playstyle. Fast, fluid combat with a fair difficulty curve, honestly gushing about Wukong, cant praise it enough. Best game ive played in years, its the monkeys nuts.

I'm a bit burnt out on soulslikes, but I might give it a go at some point. The game being less punishing is appealing.

It's not really a soulslike so much as a third-person character action game.

Its more akin to God of War only with faster combat like Bayonetta or DMC rather than a souls game. No cheap deaths like falling off a cliff or any other height for that matter, no having to trudge through sections just to retrieve your lost souls on a death, you die in Wukong you lose nothing. It encourages exploration & combat.
Shrines are reasonably close together too so no progress is lost upon death. The difficulty is in the combat, it gives the adrenaline rush when you beat a boss on the tenth attempt with having used all your tricks, spells & special moves just to squeak through on a tiny sliver of health. This has happened on multiple occassions for me & im finding myself punching the air shouting "fuck you" to the slain boss, its gripping stuff😁

This is why I didn't try it yet. I tried playing the Demons Souls remake recently but deleted it after an hour or two as I just wasn't in the mood for it. But hearing it's more like a DMC or Bayonetta type combat system is more appealing so I will probably check it out when it drops in price or comes to one of the subscription services.

I don't know where the notion that Black Myth: Wukong was a soulslike came from.
Just an assumption I think.

Everyone seems to assume that just because you level up your character, spend the currency gained by killing enemies & respawn at bonfires or shrines in Wukongs case then it must be a soulslike.
You'd think FromSoft invented these game mechanics, so if a game has them, it MUST be a soulslike.
Anyway, im here telling you guys to check it out, its not a soulslike but it is a bloody brilliant character action combat game. Currently coming up to the end of chapter 3, an epic journey so far, still loving it.

I'm not sure where I heard it was soulslike tbh. Glad to hear it's a more straightforward action game though, sounds good.

Yeah, don't know, just from the very first trailer it kind of looked like one I guess, then I didn't really watch any more and thought all along it was another Soulslike.

The soulslike thing came about when the very first video dropped back in 2020 since it was just a video showing some early gameplay with the focus being more about it being made with Unreal, a lot of the commentary at the time mistakenly gave it that tag.

It wasn't until folks started to get a closer look at the actual gameplay a couple of years later that they started to push back against calling it a soulslike, but I guess it just stuck.

Still, with the number of copies it's sold I guess it didn't hinder its success too much!
