Re: Games Completed 2018
Just finished Resident Evil: Code Veronica X. I tell you what, I shouldn't have played four of these games in a row. By the time I got to Veronica, I was over the backtracking and item management to a point where I resented the game on every start up.. It's gonna be a few months before I tackle Resident Evil Zero.

I was getting frustrated with the last boss in Assault Android Cactus earlier, so I decided to take a break and play something else. I scanned my library and nothing much took my fancy, until I remember I'd still not done TLoU DLC, despite playing the main game twice.
So, I stuck it on. I only planned to play half an hour or so because I was so tired, but ended up playing the whole thing in one sitting - I couldn't stop! Absolutely superb. The story between Ellie and Riley was really touching, I'm so glad I finally played it.
It was a lot shorter than I was expecting, which I'm pleased about to be honest. Took me about 2.5 hours, and that was finding all but one of the collectables and getting most the trophies too. The imaginary fighting game in the arcade was brilliant.
Naughty Dog really are the kings of PlayStation, in my opinion.

Hey my first 2018 release!
The platforming is high quality although it doesn't do anything new that I can think of. In fact the biggest problem is probably that I played it on handheld mode on Switch. I think a dedicated D-pad would have alleviated my biggest gripe which was often dashing in a diagonal with the analogue stick when I wanted to dash left or right. Its still a big challenge. I died 1,292 times over the game's 6 hours without seriously hunting the strawberries.
The story takes on heavy themes but handles them confidently. Its not amazing but I liked it.
I still have some b-sides and a post-credits chapter (which seems to require conditions to enter) to play.

Star Fox (path 1&2)
My first star fox experience and it’s a mixed bag. I appreciate it has its place in gaming history but it was a bit tough to play. As the difficulty ramps up the amount of lag (perhaps the SNES mini emulators fault) is very off-putting.
I’m never doing path 3 as it strikes me as impossible with the lag and ridiculous difficulty. Onto the SNES mini bundled sequel.
28/10 El Shaddai: Ascension of the metatrom
A bit disappointed really. The attract sequence is phenomenal and Jason Isaacs’ voice work sets the bar so high but the mediocre gameplay can’t quite live up to it. It’s eyewateringly beautiful and there are some novel ideas in amongst the repetitive and unimaginative combat sequences. A real shame.

Looks a bit Mega Man, plays a bit Contra but without the one-hit kills. There really isn't much more to say to it beyond that. It is fine for what it is.
I will say shame to those on Steam that tagged it as a Metroidvania because it clearly isn't one. This is becoming a recurring thing with me.
Oct 5 - On Rusty Trails (PC)
A platformer with a switching gimmick. If you are blue, blue platforms are visible and blue beams won't kill you. Same rules apply when you are red. This part is fine. The other gimmick is that you can run around the platforms in any direction. Instead of running off the platform, you switch to its side and so forth around. You can run on any side. Unfortunately, the controls for this bit is very awkward.
Imagine a rectangle. You are running right on it, reach the end and switch to its side. Most games will let you continue moving down the side while continuing to hold right. In this game, you stop moving and have to press down to continue further. It just makes movement awkward since doing this is common throughout the entire game.
Oct 8 - Metro: Last Light Redux (PC)
You can look all the way back to my comments on the first game here and it is basically the same. This one, however, I found better simply because of how much less outside areas there are. It makes much less of a reliance on filters with much less of a risk of running out of them and becoming completely screwed.
The story is also more coherent with its endings. The first had two different endings but the entire game was heading towards one of them and then you can suddenly get a different one. This one also has two endings but your actions at least make sense in influencing which one you get this time and it can go either way.

Re: Games Completed 2018
I finished Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's a cool game, big set pieces and some impressive (looking) tombs, but I think the 2013 game was more fun to play? I'm not a huge fan of well-done linear games getting open world sequels (Arkham Asylum vs. City) so I was always looking for the nearest Tomb or Story to streamline things for me. I did enjoy Lara not getting stabbed as much and being a bit stronger this go around, but I'd still prefer something closer to a modern day Tomb Raider Legend.

Zelda II: Adventure of Link
I never ever thought I would finish this but I did. In the end I had an extremely fortunate rush to the final temple where perfectly placed red potions and appeared at the exact moment I needed them. I ended up making it from the final town to the end without losing a life finishing with 5 lives. I even beat thunderbird and dark link without being hit.
(Obviously with copious use of save states in between)

Due to a very busy schedule with work and life in general, not much gaming has been done this year so it is only now that I have finished my first Final Fantasy ever! While I will leave my main thoughts for the final episode of Cane and Rinse this year, I will say that overall, I really enjoyed this adventure and I can certainly see why it was so influential when it came out and why so many gamers look back at this title with fondness. Compelling story, diverse characters, fun battle system and an incredible soundtrack, really does a great job of introducing the JRPG to newbies.
Now onto something far smaller in scale, need a break from the epic adventures for a bit!

Really enjoyed my time with this one, content wise this is touching Elder Scrolls levels of questlines and side quests. Still a fair few things I haven’t seen, but all the primary quest lines are done (and I’m only one achievement away from maximum). I’ll wait to do more when the season pass goes on sale (I expect they’ll up the level cap as well at some point).
If you do play it, pick Kassandra.
Not quite my favourite AC game (I still really love Brotherhood for the mechanics it added and the excellent multiplayer mode) but it’s defintely in the top three.

Re: Games Completed 2018

A fantastic experience that does a lot of great things, but is also rather obtuse and thorny in a few areas. In general it was very fun and an impressive achievement for such a small team, and was definitely worth waiting all the years since the crowdfunding campaign.
It has great pixel art with lush environments, exciting and well fleshed out combat with very good animation and sound design, and a really enjoyable story. It does lean very heavily on tropes, so it's a pretty predictable plot if you're familiar with any kind of sci-fi/anime/JRPG stuff, but it executes it really well with some great dramatic moments and charming characters with a lot of personality and humour. It's actually pretty impressive how expressive they make the main character, despite her not being able to talk. I suppose it lacks a compelling antagonist, but the driving force behind figuring out all the secrets behind the amnesiac protagonist, and seeing their interactions with other characters was a lot of fun.
Gameplay mechanics are really well fleshed out and satisfying. It's pretty unique, with its mix of melee combat and almost twin-stick shooter style to it. It's fast, flashy, and packs a strong audiovisual punch that has a lot of polish to it. And the different elements you can switch between add a fun layer of strategy to fights as well, with each having their own unique special moves too, which are all very fun to pull off. The skill trees for each element are huge! Really impressive how much there is to get in to in levelling up. The way these mechanics work with the puzzles is really cool as well. Juggling different elements together to solve some very tricky puzzles was a lot of fun. The way it uses projectiles in puzzles I thought was pretty unique and interesting too.
Some aspects of the game are a little grating though, and it did verge in to frustration a few times, although it was never bad enough to ruin the experience overall. One issue comes from the double-edged sword of the freedom of movement this game gives you. In general it feels really good, giving you free 360 degree movement, and letting you jump around the environment and hop over gaps quickly and fluidly. But the problem is that this can make navigating certain areas pretty confusing, as you're not exactly sure what elevation some platforms are. It can also be an issue with some of the enemy design. While enemies are generally fun to fight, there are a few which move up and down vertically, and it can be a pain trying to hit them and work out where they are in space. Some of the earlier dungeons are also not too great at conveying what they want you to do, and sometimes sidequests have really obtuse objectives that were a pain. Dungeon design gets a lot better as the game goes on however, with them simultaneously getting more complex but also better at signalling what they want from you in puzzles. Better paced too.
Another thing worth mentioning is that this game is actually pretty damn hard! It's not impossible or anything, but it certainly makes you work for your success. Levelling is scaled in such a way that you are rarely in a position where you can let your guard down against the current area. Puzzles can also get very complex and require a lot of hard thinking. Usually when you work them out they seem obvious in retrospect, but getting there can be pretty demanding. It's a lot harder than any Zelda-like game I've played in a long time. The game does have difficulty sliders for both combat and puzzles, but since I played the majority of the game before they patched those in, I didn't touch them at all. And the way the puzzle slider works, it would only make one type of puzzles easier. The game is also really long! Took me about 70 hours to beat it, and I still didn't do everything. The game does imply that you can get a slightly different ending if you 100% it, which I might try, since I don't think I'm that far off. [Minor update: You don't have to get 100%, you just complete a certain sidequest by talking to a few people. It unlocks an epilogue chapter which has yet to be added to the game.]
Very satisfying experience overall though. A game that brings out very strong emotions, both positive and negative. But the lows make the highs all the more sweet. Impressively expansive and well crafted too.

The Quiet Man
I have no idea what I have just played and have a million questions about it. Would be a great one to cover.
Am I going to replay it so I can hear the dialogue? Nope!. Probably watch it on YouTube.
A strange bizarre mess. I would recommend watching someone stream it over buying it.

LA Noire
Was interesting to revisit this and scratch my rockstar open world itch given I can’t afford Red Dead 2. It’s a fascinating game to replay as I had forgotten how much of the game is actually detective work with very little action/shooting outside of the random crimes.

First half maybe a tad too easy, but the challenge ramps up noticeably in the second half.

I usually have a walkthrough near to hand when playing any point and click games (it isn't a regular genre for me), but I played a the first half of Broken Age on a plane with no internet access. I think its relative ease got a bit of criticism at the time, but then that game had to be all things to all its Kickstarter backers so it was never going to avoid criticism.

Re: Games Completed 2018

So I was pretty excited for this one. I really liked the first game and was disappointed by the PSP sequels, mostly due to technical limitations of that platform (and VC2's high school anime hi-jinks which were a step too far). So, straight off the bat VC4 is giving me what I wanted, the larger battlefields of the original and less reuse of the same maps over and over of the PSP games. And for the first 15 hours or so I was happy with that .
The gameplay sticks largely to VC1, with only a few things from subsequent games (good things usually e.g. APCs, Squad Stories which give everyone else a bit more character). VC2 and 3 had become bloated with job trees and the armored tech class was ridiculous (basically people with massive swords and shields that could deflect bullets) so I was glad things like these were cut. The AI is still poor, sadly. The game is easier than the first one, which may be a positive for some, but a negative for me. The level rank is still solely based on number of turns elapsed. I don't think scouts are as overpowered as before but grenadiers make a mockery of the sandbag defences so I'm still not sure how I feel about them. The turn based gameplay with real time elements is still a massive draw for me and new squad is always fun to play with. I love storming a camp or working my way around a particularly persistent enemy. So as I said I was happy with the first 15 hours even if it didn't excite me as much as the original.
Over the second half of the game it's plot became very interesting and properly drew me in. I started to care more about the main characters and everything they went through. Because of this I now can't decide whether I prefer the first game or this one. Its the Valkyria Chronicles sequel that I always wanted rather than the one we originally got.

I ended up having to look stuff up towards the back end of that game, it does get quite fiendish. It's pretty front loaded, too.
